Application filed October 31, 1917, Serial No. 199,518. Renewed July 9, 1919. Serial No. 809,780.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EnwiN A. MoKoY, citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutter-Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cutter heads and has for an object to provide such a cutter head as will be employed successfully with the stump harvesters forming the subject matter of a'separate application in which this applicant is a joint applicant, Serial No. 192,566.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cutter head of the type adapted to more successfully disintegrate and conserve the cuttings from standing stumps.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cutter head cutting a very large circle with improved means for stabilizing and centering such cutting head in action.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

' The improved cutting head which forms the subject matter of this application comprises a body substantially conical in shape as shown at 10. The conical body has a plurality of slots cut through its sides as indicated at 11 in which are secured a plurality of cutting knives 12, the knives 12 being curved to follow the line of the slot 11 which takes the form of a spiral in view of its following the inclined side of the cone and at the same time the forward end being advanced. The knives 12 are secured to the cutter head in any approved manner as by the bolts 13 and extend beyond the periphery of the cutter head as indicated at Figs. 2 and 3.
The apex of the cone, being the normally lower end, is truncated as indicated at Figs. 1 and 4 to form a substantially flat surface 14, the knives 12 being formed with cutting extremities 15 and auxiliary knives 16 being employed secured to the cutter head in any approved manner as by the bolts 17.
Extending below the surface 1 1 is a hub 18 carrying an auxiliary cutter 19 to which a positioning or centering boring point 20 in turn is secured, carried upon the cutter 19, preferably by the interposition of a hub 21. At Figs. 1 and 1 the cutter 19 and centering point 20 have been shown of different sizes compared to the conical body 10 as it has been demonstrated that the parity of sizes is not essential.
Also the centering device under some conditions may be made with a body substantially cylindrical as shown at Figs. 5 and 6 having a cutting point 20 similar to an ordinary drill with the openings 16' also communicating with the slots 11. By the use of this last mentioned centering device 19, a circumferential bearing is provided which prevents wabbling of the cutting head when the centering device is entered in a stump.
lVithin the cutter head and at one side of the slot 11, ribs 22 have been formed to receive and position the cutting knives 12. Upon the sides of the slots 11 opposite the ribs 22 other ribs 23 are formed as spokes extending upwardly substantially flush with the upper side or base of the cone as shown more particularly in the perspective at Fig. 2. The intervening space between the ribs 22 and 23 is formed curved as indicated at 21 corresponding substantially with the curvature of a propeller whereby the cuttings from the cutting knives 12 are by such curvature thrown upwardly and outwardly by the centrifugal force of the rotation of the cutter head into the housing 25 shown at F ig. =1. The housing 25 forms no part of the present invention being included in the aforesaid and co-pending application. The cutter head is, however, provided with an annular furrow 26 to receive the housing 25.
The cutter head is provided with a hub 27 by which it is secured to the driving shaft 28 in any usual well known mechanical manner, it being shown at Fig. A as being screw threaded to the hub and provided with keys 29 inserted in the key-ways 30. By reference to the aforesaid co-pending application it will be noted that the cuttings from the knives 12 thrown up by the propellers 24 are ejected through the opening 31 in the housing 25, which latter housing remains stationary while the cutter head rotates. As heretofore pointed out, the housing 25 forms no part of the present invention eX- cept as it cooperates in conjunction with the specific structure of the cutting head and maintains the cuttings from wasteful dissemination and directs them to a predetermined depository. It will also be understood that the necessary means will be provided for rotating the cutter head and raising and lowering the same for operation, such mechanical means for driving and moving forming no specific part of the present application. 7
What I claim is 1. A cutting head having openings formed therein, cutters positioned to direct the cuttings into the interior of the cutting head and means within the cutting head to traject the cuttings therefrom.
2. A cutting head comprising a body having openings therethrough, cutters extending beyond the surface of the cutter head and so positioned relative to the openings that the cuttings are passed through the openings into the interior of the head and means within the cutter head for trajecting the cuttings therefrom.
3. A cutter head comprising a body having openings therethrough, cutting knives, secured upon one side of the openings and positioned to direct the cuttings through the openings and means within the cutter head for trajecting the cuttings from the interior.
4. A cutter head provided with openings therethrough, cutting knives positioned to direct cuttings through the openings into the interior of the head and means to traject the cuttings from the interior ofthe head and direct them to a predetermined depository. I
5. A cutter head comprising a body having openings therethrough, cutters positioned to direct the cuttings through the openings into the interior of the cutting head, means within the interior of the cutting head for discharging the cuttings therefrom by centrifugal force and means to restrain the discharge throughout a part of the circumference of the cutting head.
6. A cutter head comprising a body hav tioned to direct the cuttings through the openings into the interior of the cutter head and curved members formed within the cutter head adapted to direct the cuttings upwardly and outwardly by centrifugal force.

A cutter head comprising a body having openings therethrough, cutters positioned to direct the cuttings through the openings into the interior of the head and propellershaped members positioned within the cutter head. 4 8. A cutter head comprising a body hav ing openings therethrough, cutters positioned to direct the cuttings through the openings into the interior of the cutter head and propeller-shaped members positioned within the cutter head and adapted to direct the cuttings upwardly and outwardly by centrifugal force. 9. A cutter head comprising a body having openings therethrough, cutters positioned to direct the cuttings through the openings into the interior of the head, propeller-shaped members within the head adapted to direct the cuttings upwardly and outwardly by centrifugal force and means to restrain the centrifugal discharge of the cuttings throughout a portion of the circumference of the cutter head.
10. A cutter head comprising a conoidal body having slots formed'in its sides communicating with the interior, cutters posi tioned to direct the cuttings through the slots into the interior of the conoid and means positioned within the conoid fortrajecting the cuttings therefrom by centrifugal force.
11. A cutter head comprising a conoidal body having slots formed'in its sides communicating with the hollow interior, cutters positioned to direct the cuttings through the slots into the hollow interior of the conoid and members positioned within the conoid to receive the cuttings from the slots and discharge them therefrom by centrifugal force. 7
13. A cutter head comprising a conoidal.
body having slots formed in its sides, cutters positioned to direct the cuttings through the slots into. the hollow interior of the conoid, propeller-shaped members positioned to receive the cuttings from the slots and discharge them therefrom' by centrifugal force and means embracing the base of the conoid adapted to restrain the centrifugal discharge of the cuttings throughout a portion of the circumference.
14. A cutter head comprising a conoidal body having slots formed in its sides, cutters positioned to direct the cuttings through the slots into the hollow interior of the coand a centering device having a cylindrical noid and a centering device having a cylinperiphery with slots formed in the periphery drical periphery and slots formed in the peterminating adjacent the cutters, and a cut- 10 riphery communicating with the slots in the tin point formed upon the centering device. 5 conoid. fn testimony whereof I affix my signature.
