Applcatonled August 31, 1921. Serial No. 497,399.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lrnown that I, ZnNo OSTENBERG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of San Jose, in the county of Santa Claraand State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coatingli/Iachine Block Adjusters, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to coating machines of the general type set forth in my copending application, Serial No. 140,101, iiled dan. 26, 1921, -in which movable blocks are provided for regulating the widthof the coating as applied to vthe material coated.
It is the Object ofmy invention to provide means for adjusting the blocks referred 'to so that the same, `after once being set, will automtaically conform to changes in the width of thecloth.
In the drawing,-l
Figure 1 is a side View of my invention in position, partly in elevation and partly in section.
Figure 2 is an enlarget sectional view through the valve shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the device shown in Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a portion of a coating table over which the coated material 2 passes, and 3 indicates a portion of the coating knife having a discharge Orifice 3?, the movable block L1 being set to permit the coating material to flow onto material 2 and to within a short distance of its edge 5.
At 6 is shown a bracket mounted on table 1 and support-ing a movable cylinder Tand a fixed piston head 8. Piston head 8 is arranged in the center of cylinder 7 forming chambers 9 and 10 therein, the said cham bers being connected to valve chamber 11 bypassages as 12 and 13 respectively. A suitable fluid is conveyed to chamber 11 under pressure by a flexible conduit as 14:. In valve chamber 11 is fitted a wedge shaped valve 15 normally closing olf port 1G and operated by a crank 17 and rod 18. n Y
Mounted on cylinder 7 and extending outwardly therefrom in parallel relation to block 4; is an arm 19 carrying a pivot 2O on which is mounted, a bell-crank 21, the
shorter arm of which is normally in a horizontal position and carries a weight 22 and the longer arm of which is normally vertical and contacts with edge 5 of the `coated material 2. The rod 18 is pivotally attached to' the longerarm of the bell-crank 21 as at In the' lower portion of valve chamber 1l is an exhaust port 24 normally communicating' with both sides thereof as shown.
In operation the parts are all normally arranged as vshow-n in the figure. If, however, the material 2 becomes narrower through shrinkage or any other cause, the vertical arm of bell-crank 21 follows it as to position 25 because Vof the` weighted horizontal arm. This movement of the vertical arnr operates valve 15 to position 26 whereupon duid under pressure is passed into chamberV 9 and the whole cylinder 7 and parts carriedV thereby are moved forwardly until the valve 15 is closed, this closing taking place when the long arm of bell-crank 21 has again as sumed a vertical position. The block 4 having been moved up to position 26 the in# coated edge is'm'aintained at the saine width as before.
If the clo-thrwidens the block L1 is moved s backwardly by reversal of the valve 15 which permits the actuating fluid to enter chamber 10. In this manner the material being coated may be coveredrto within a predeterminated distance from the edge throughout its whole length, no matter how pro nounced the undulations inthe edge thereof may be.
It is to be understood, of course, that while I have herein shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention, that changes in form and construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims. Y
I claim 1. In combination, a coatingknife, a piston supported in liXed relation thereto, a cylirr der mounted to reciprocate on said piston, means carried by said cylinder for varying the width of the discharge orifice in said knife, mea-ns for actuating said cylinder, a follower element carried by said cylinder and adapted to engage the material passed under said knife, and means operated by said element, for rendering said actuating means operative.
2. In combination, a coating `knife adjusting block, a cylinder attached to said, block to move therewith, a stationary piston arranged in said cylinder, a support therefor, means foractuating said cylinder, an
v'and means operated by the said bell-crank for rendering` said actuating means operative.V l
4;. n combination, coating knife adjust ingblock, a follower element movable therewith and means rendered operative by the Vmovement of saidV follower element for actuating` said adjustingvblock.
5. A coating knife, an adjusting block mounted to move4 longitudinally thereof, a follower element mounted to maintain positive Contact with the edge of the malterial being coated and movable with said block, and means rendered operative by the action of said follower element for actuating said block.
6. A coating` knife,Y an adjusting` block mounted to move longitudinally thereof to define the Width of the sheet of Coating material discharged therefrom and means actuated by the material being coated-for au tomatieally maintaining` said block in a predetermined position with relation to the edge of the said material.
