' CALCULATING MACHINE.
- I spam ed August 10, 1920. Serial No. 402,733.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL SCHALLER, a citizen of the Republic of Germany, "residing at Brunswick, Germany, have invented certain 5 new and useful Improvements in Calculat-' ing Machines (for which applications for patents have been filed in Germany on De cember 24, 1918;- in Czechoslovakia on Decemher 23, 1919; in Sweden on December 30,
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in calculating machines, and more particularly incalculating machines which areprovided with printing 'mechanism having in each type wheel 'a blank field apart from those equipped with the type for the numbers from 1 to 9 and the zero sign, andin which each type wheel is provided with gear wheels having eleven teeth; The object of the improvements is to provide novel means for shifting the type wheels from the positions with the blank fields in pr inting positions into those with the zeros or other signs in printing positions. \Vith this object in view my invention consists in constructing the" operating members for the type wheels with shiftable operating portions and in providing mechanism for setting the said portions from their blank positions into their type positions.
. In order that my invention be more clearly understood an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views toindicate corresponding parts. In said drawing,-
Fig. 1, is a development of one of the ty e wheels, Q
ig. 2, is a sideview of the mechanism,
and
Fig. 3, is a sectional View showing a detail. For the purpose of explaining the inven tion reference will be made to a calculating scribed in an application for patent Serial No.,402735, executed by me simultaneously herewith, so that a detailed description of the whole machine may not be necessary.
vention is not limited to the use in combination with the said machine. I
As shown in the said application the printing mechanism is adapted to be set 1919; and in Poland on March 31, 1920), of-
machine of the construction shown and de' But I wish it to be understood, that my in-- 'either from the registering mechanism or from thekeys of a keyboard through the intermediary of shiftable slides, which slides have also the function to transmit the operationof the keys to a setting mechanism,
from which the values are transmitted to the registering mechanism by means of a ma. chine crank. Each slide is adapted to be operated by one of nine keys of a column, which keys show the numbers from 1 to 9 and the .zero sign. By depressing one of the keys the slide a controlled thereby is shifted bya spring connected thereto a distance corresponding to the value ofthe key for transmitting the said value to the setting mechanism. In Figure 2 of the drawings the reference character a designates tlfimr portion of one of the transmitting slides disclosed in said applicationNo. 402,735,which in the present. invention is formed at its rear end with a horizontal arm a having pins 9 secured thereto which provide sliding supports for a rack 9 having slots g; When shifting the slide a the type wheel 6 is set by means of the rack g'and gear wheels k, c and d. At the beginning of the displacement of the slide a from the blank field position .shown in Fig. 2 and in the direction of the arrow a2. a lug if provided on the slide rocks a lever e upwards, which lever is formed at its front end with a'bevel c. When thus elevated the bevel e is in position for engagement with a pin f provided on a pawl 7 which is normally held in elevated position by a spring.v i By the bevele the pawl is rocked downwards into position for engagement with the teeth of the rack g. The pawl is adapted to.be reciprocated inthe direction of the movement of the slide 01. To this end, the shaft i one unit less than the number actually set' up by the key. The subsequent turning of the type wheel I) to the propernumber is effective by the turning of the hand crank of the calculating machine. If, for example, the key designating a value of five onakeyboard is pressed down, the slide will he moved for five units, so that the type unit passes nullity (not zero, but the blank field) over zero, 1, 2, 3, to the value 4. @n turning the crank further movement from i: to 5 takes place, which corresponds to the value of the figure set up on the key-board. If a key designating value is not pressed, there is, of course, no movement of the slide a, and the lever e and the ratchet 7 do not enter into action. 1
When .printin a value only the types located at the le t of the value should he omitted fromv the record, while the zeros at the right 01' the said value must be printed. Therefore the rockers e are provided with arms 2'' projecting laterally therefrom and below the corresponding levers 0 located at the right thereof, whereby all" the levers e cooperating with keys located at the right of the key being struck are lifted and all the racks g corresponding thereto are shifted a distance corresponding to one value for shifting the type wheels from thepositions with the blank fields in printing positions into the positions with the zeros in printing positions.
In the construction shown in the aforesaid application {or patent printin is eii'ect d b throwing the printing mechanism with t e type wheels against the platen by means of a printing lever. In the construction shown herein the rinting mechanism is stationary and printing is effected by throwing the platen against the type wheels. As shown the shaft 132 carrying the printing lever l29 is provided with a pin 130 to which a spring 131 and a link i353 are connected, which link is directly connected to the platen 184:.
