To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN C. WVAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calculating-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is intended for the easier calculating of numbers printed in a hori zontal line. y
In ,Patent No. 893,717, issued to me on July 21, 1908, there is shown a calculating attachment to a typewriter which is able to add numbers arranged in a horizontal line. This is accomplished by the reciprocating of the totalizer in front of the master wheel. For the printing of numbers, the carriage moves'on continually in the same direction to the left. For the calculating of the various decimal places of the same number, the totalizer also moves on in the same direction in front of the master wheel. But between two different numbers, the carriage moves on in the same direction to the left, while the totalizer is reciprocated and brought back to the right, and located in the proper position for the new number. The carriage and totalizer then again move in unison for the printing and calculating of the next number.
It is quite customary to employ a tabulator in connection with a calculatingattachment to a typewriter. The ta'bulator is operated once for each number, and its operation results in the proper locating of the carriage for the printing of the number in its proper place. In the above cited patent, the reciprocating of the totalizer is accomplished by the carriage of the typewriter. One of the objects of my invention is the reciprocating of the totalizer by means of the tabulato-r keys instead of by the carriage.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1. is a front elevation of the mechanism as mounted upon a typewriter.

As the actual construction and operation of a typewriter inclusive of keys, type levers, type bars, carriage, escapement, etc., is very old and well-known in the art, and is to be found inany machine on the market, and as the presence of all of these parts in the drawing would help to confuse rather than to clarify, they have been omitted therefrom, Of course, they are supposed to be present in the actual machine.
In these drawings, 1 represents the framework of the typewriter and calculating machine, upon which is mounted the carriage, 2, in the usual manner. Travelin in unison with the carriage, 2, is a bar 3, 4 igs. 1, 2, 4,
said bar, 3, fastened to the carriage in any suitable manner. The bar, 3, is provided with a series of apertures or notches, 4. The function of the bar and notches is to support one or more engager pieces, 5. These engagerg are intended to engage and to move thel-totalizer, as will be explained below. Each one of these engagers is rovided with finger pieces, 7 (Fig. 9), an an extension 8, to enter one of the notches, 4:, to be ac curately located upon said bar, and notch 9, to engage a proJection from the totalizer. The edges of metal at the side of notch 9 are beveled, at 10, 10, and at 11, 11, for the readier engagement with the projection on the totalizer.
Mounted upon abar, 22, in the framework, Each one of these is connected by its link, 24, to its lever, 25. These levers, 25, are rotatably mounted upon a shaft, 26. Each lever 25 at its upper end is in engagement with a pin, 27, which pin is rigidly fastened into a sector, 28. These sectors, 28, are all rotatably mounted upon a shaft, 29, fastened in the framework. Meshing with each of these sectors, 28, is a mating sector, 30. These mating sectors: are rotatably mounted upon a shaft 31, also mounted upon the framework. The depressing of the tabulator key, 23, by means of the intermediate parts above mentioned therefore results in the rotating of the mating sectors, 28 and 30about their respective axes. and this rotating takes plat- 2 in an upward direction, looking at Mounted in hearings in the framework is a shaft 35 to which is rigidly attached a set of double arms, 36 (Figs. 2 and 8.)
There is one of these double arms, 36, for each of the gear mates, 28 and 30. Each double arm, 36, is provided at its two ends with rollers, 37, 37, and these rollers c051)- eratc with circular dwells, 38, formed by the upper portions of the gears mates 28 and 30. The upward rotating of the gear mates, 28 and 30, results in the striking of one of the circular dwells, 38, against its cooperating roller, 37. The particular circular dwell, 38, which first strikes its cooperating roller, 37, pushes that roller away and rotates its supporting arm 36 and therefore also shaft 35. -And this continues until the other roller 37 strikes the other circular dwell 38. The parts are so shaped that in this position which is shown in Fig. 3, there is no crowding and no superfluous space. The result therefore is that the motion of the gear mates 28 and definitely locates the cooperating double arm 36, and shaft 35, and after this definite locating has been accomplished, the gearmates, 28 and 30 are free to continue in their upward motion, the rollers, 37, 37, riding on their respective circular dwells 38, 38, above mentioned.
An examination of Fig. 1 and more particularly of Fig. 2 will show that the said arms 36 are mounted upon shaft 35, not in the same plane, but in a spiral, and the result is that the dwell position of each one of the arms 36 brings the shaft in a definite and different position. The depression of any tabulator key, therefore, results in locating the shaft in a definite position depending on the tahulator key.
lxigidly fastened to the shaft 35 is an arm 40 which is connected by a link 41 to a lever 42 pivot-ally mounted upon the framework. This lever 42 in turn is connected with a link 43 which in turn is connected to a lever ll. again pivotallv mounted upon the framework, and this lever it is again connected to a link 45 which in turn is connected to the totalizer 46. The rotation of the shaft 35 about its axis by means of matin gears 28 and 30 above mentioned thcrefore results in the motion of the totalizer 46 upon its supports 47, 47, and the definite locating of shaft 35 also results in the definite locating of the totalizer 46. And thus finally the depressing of a tabulator key results in the definite locating of the total-. izer it; in a position dependent upon the value of the particular tabulator key.-
Cach lever 25 above mentioned has an arm 50 extending therefrom. and under all of these arms is a shaft 51 which is supported by the end pieces 52 mounted upon a shaft 53. which is supported in the frame. work. The tension spring 50 fastened at one end to one of the arms 52, and at its other to the framework, tends to hold the shaft 51 in its up position in contact with the arms 50. The shaft 53 has fastened at its end an arm 55, which arm has a pin 56 extending therefrom, and working in the slot of the lever 57, which is pivotally mounted upon the frame Work. The lever 57 in turn has a slot 58 which operates a pin 59, mounted in a lever 60. This lever (50 is supported upon the shaft 31 previously mentioned. The lever 60 at its upper end is connected to a link 61 which in turn is connected at its other end to a lever 62 pivotally mounted upon the framework. And this lever 62 at its other end is connected to a. link 63 which in turn is connected to a lever 64, also pivotally mounted upon the frame work. The upper end of the lever 64, is connected to the disengaging plate (55 (Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5, and (3). The disengaging plate 65 has two diagonal slots (36, (36, through which are passed screws 67, (37, into the framework. The disengaging plate ()5 has its upper portion formed into a disengaging bar 68. there being a slot (39 cut below that. The depressing of any of the tabulating keys 23 and the consequent rotation of the lever 25 about its axis 26 results in the driving of the shaft 51 by means of arm 50 and the consequent rotation of the shaft 53 ,upon its center. This in turn by means of the mechanism just described results in the pulling of the plate (35 to the right.
The plate 65 because of the diagonal slots (36 above mentioned therefore moves down carrying down bar (58, and the purpose of this motion will be immediately explained. The totalizer 46 is provided with an engaging plate 80 mounted in its framework. This engaging plate 80 is provided with a tension spring 81 fastened with its one end to the engaging platc.80 and with its other end to the framework of the totalizer. The engaging plate 80 is formed at its back, looking at Figs. 2 and 5, into an engaging tongue 82, and this engaging tongue therefore has a constant tendency to move upward, and it is prevented from moving too far by contact with stop 83 fastened in the framework of the totalizer. The tongue 82 is shaped to fit within slot 9 of cngager 5 previously mentioned. so that whenever the tongue 82 is entered within slot 9 of engage]- 5, and the carriage of the typewriter is moved. then bar 3, engages engager tongue 82, and particularly the totalizer 46 are moved along therewith. This occurs during the printing and calculating of the various decimal places constituting one number.
As the carriage of the typewriter is moved along carrying the totalizer -in the manner just described, the two being connected by the. mechanism just explained. and this motion of the carriage (JUlltllHlts, the iotalizer upon the totalizer.
is carried far enough to the left (Figs. 1 and 4) to have its tongue 82 ride under the bevel 90 of plate 91 (Figs. 1, l, and T). The tongue 82 is therefore depressed and forced out of slot 9 of engager 5, and engager and carriage are therefore free to continue in motion to the left without moving the totalizer along. The totalizer is left at rest at the left side of its zone of travel. As the carriage continues farther, the other engagers 5 pass over the engager tongue 82, but the latter will be too far below them to be engaged by them.
An examination of Figs. 1, 4, and T will show that the plate 91 is provided with another bevel 92 at its right side which operates upon the engager tongue 82 in a manner similar to the bevel 90. The carriage of the typewriter is thus able to impart to the totalizer only a limited motion constituting the zone of reciprocation of the totalizer.
An examination of Figs. 1, l, 5, and (i will show that the tongue 82 of engaging plate 80 extends through the slot 9 of the plate 65. The depressing of plate 65 and the consequent depressing of the disengag ing bar 68 results in the depressing of 'tongue '82 and the consequent removal of said tongue out of reach of slot 9 of the engager 5. Fig. 4 shows the parts in this position, This is the function of the disengaging plate 65.
In the operation of the machine, tongue 82 is within the slot 9 while the numeral keys of the typewriter and calculating machine are operated. The type will print upon the paper and the master wheel .will operate Between the printing of each two figures, the carriage and totalizer will advance one step.- As soon as the last figure of the number has been printed and calculated, the operator will depress the tabulator key corresponding to the highest decimal place of the next number. This depressing of the tabulator key results in the release of the carriage by the ordinary tabulator mechanism. The carriage will therefore proceed to the left and be stopped by the tabulator stop as is usual. But the same movement, namely the de ressing of the tabulator key just mentionec, will now produce two additional results. One is the pulling of plate .65 to the right and conseuently the disengaging of the totalizer rom its previously engaged engager 5, and the other is the locating of the totalizer by means of the gear mates 28 and 30 in the position corresponding to the value of the tabulator key depressed. As long as the operator keeps the tabulator key depressed, the tongue 82 also will remain depressed and will not enter the slot of the next engager 9, which next engager has now been brought over the engaging tongue 82 by the mot-ion of the carriage produced because of writer, known as the Gorin tabul-ator.
The construction of the tabulator is' not a part of this invention and therefore has not been illustrated. There. are many tabulators on the market, for instance the one used in connection with the Remington ty lee connection to the tabulator which is completely located-at the back of the typewriter and not shown in any ofthe drawings, is by means of links 95, joined to levers 25 shown in the lower right hand corner of Fig. 2.
Attention is drawn to the difference in the operation of the mechanism here described and the mechanism in the above cited Patent, No. 893,717. In said patent, as the carriage of the typewriter moves from right to left, it engages the reciprocating portion, carrying it along through its zone of travel at the end of which it is released and returns under the influence of its spring to its previous location. In the steady motion to the left of the type-writer carriage,
the reciprocating portion of the calculating machine would therefore be given a number of reciprocations at the end of each one of which it would come in violent contact with a stop upon the carriage of the typewriter. The consequent jarring is very injurious and it has been found that this hammering continually loosens the screws and rivets, making it very difficult to keep the mechanism in order. By comparison with the mechanism described in'this specification, it will be seen that this jarring under the influence of a sprin has been eliminated, the totalizer being %rou ht to'its new position under the influence o" the pressure of the finger of the operator which of course is not vio- Y lent.
Again, should the typewriter be used for ordinary correspondence work and not for calculating, then naturally the tabulator would not be used, and therefore the total izer having once been located at either extreme of the zone of travel will now be simultaneously and automatically in alocation where its parts are out of reach of the carriage parts. It will therefore remain at rest and not be subject to any wear and tear during any time except during the actual calculating time.
In Patent No. 893,717, it has been shown that the totalizer returns to its previous position under the influence of a spring, and during the calculating is carried along b the typewriter carriage. In order that this may be readily accomplished. it has been found to be necessary to strengthen the spring operating the typewriter carriage. This.
results in a material hardening of the touch of the keys. In the mechanism described in this application, no extra return sp ing is required, and therefore no resultant strengthening of the carriage spring. Consequently the typewriter keys are not burdened with any extra load and their touch remains unimpaired.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and in the .mechanism described, there has been shown a reciprocating totalizer. This is the form in which the calculating machine has been put on the market in connection with the Remington typewriter. Of course it is understood that should the typewriter be of a different class, for instance a book typewriter like the Elliott-Fisher machine, then the mechanism would naturally be changed therewith and the totalizer Would. probably be stationary while the parts above described as stationary would reciprocate. In fact, calculating .machines in connection with typewriters might loosely be sub-divided into three classes:
1. Those in which the master wheel is stationary While the totalizer travels relatively thereto.
Those in which the totalizer is stationary While the master wheel travels relatively thereto.
3. Those in which there is no master wheel proper, its place having been taken by other mechanisms, as some sort of traveling trigger, determining the place of the calculation.
But in all of these classes, there is always some piece traveling relatively to another, and the position of this piece determines the decimal place of calculating in the calculating machine. I therefore call this traveling piece the decimal carriage. This decimal carriage may therefore be a totalizer, a master wheel, or a. trigger, the name decimal carriage being applied to it because of its function of determining the decimal place of the calculating, independent of other additional functions it may possess. In this machine, the decimal carriage is the traveling totalizer.
In this specification, the tabulator has been shown as one with a set of keys, being very similar therein to the ordinary Gorin tabulator on the market. But there are other ta'bulators of a different nature now on the market which differ from the Gorin in that they do not have a set of keys, but that one key is brought to any one of a plurality of positions. It is quite evident that without departing from the spirit of my invention it would be possible to change the mechanism to conform with this other tabulat-or, or with tabulators of even a different nature. The spirit of my invention resides in the fact that the operation of the tabulator determines the location of the decimal carriage, independent of any connection of the decimal -arriage with the printing carriage of the typewriter.
I claim:
1. In a machine adapted to print and calculate numbers arranged in a line; a printing carriage to determine the printing point; a decimal carriage tabulatablc. in either direction to determine the calculating point; tabulating mechanisms operative on said carriages; and a set of key operated levers connected to said tabulating mecha nisms whereby operation of one of said levers locates both the printing carriage and the decimal carriage each independently of the other.
In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line:

3. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point: engaging mechanism connecting the two carriages whereby they advance in unison for the various decimal places of a number; printing carriage tabulating means advancing and locating the printing *arriage for the highest decimal place of the next number; decimal carriage tabulating means retracting and locating the decimal carriage for said highest decimal place of the next number; disengaging mechanism disengaging the two carriages to permit the operation of the said two tabulating means and to reengagc the two carriages after said operation; and manually operable mechanism operative upon the disengaging mechanism and the two tabulating means simultaneously.
4. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; a plurality of engagers upon the printing carriage adapted to connect the two carriages whereby they advance in unison for the various decimal places of a number; printing carriage tabulating means advancing and locating the printing carriage for the highest decimal place of the next number; decimal carriage tabulating means retracting and locating the decimal carriage for said highest decimal place of the next number; and manually operable mechanism to operate both tabulating means simultaneously.
5. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; a plurality of engagers upon the printing carriage adapted to connect the two carriages whereby they advance in unison for the various decimal places of a number; printing carriage tabulating means advancing and locating the printing carriage for the highest decimal place of the next number; decimal carriage tabulating means retracting and locating the decimal carriage for said highest decimal place of the next number; manually operable mechanism to operate both tabulating means simulta neously; and disengaging mechanism to disengage the decimal carriage and its cooperating engager, to permit the independent operation of said two calculating means and to reengage the decimal carriage and another engager after said operation.
6. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line:
a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; engaging mechanism con-. necting the two carriages whereby they ad vance in unison for the various decimal; places of a number; printing carriage tabulating means advancing and locating the rintin carria e for the hi hest decimal b b b place of the next number; decimal carrlage tabulatlng means retracting and locating the decimal carriage for said high-- est decimal place of the next number; disengaging mechanism disengaging the two carriages to permit the operation of the said two tabulating means and to re'e'ngage the two carria es after said operation; and manually operzfiile mechanism operative first, to disengage the two carriages, second to operate the two tabulating means and finally to renigage the two carriages.

In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a primary carriage locating the printing point; a traveling totalizer locating the calculating point; engaging mechanism connecting the printing carriage and the totalizer whereby they advance in unison for the various decimal places of a number printing carriage tabulating means advancing and BO-locatin-g'the printing carriage for the highest decimal place of the next number; totalizer tabulating means retracting and locating the totalizer for said highest decimal place of the next number; and manually operable mechanism to operate both tabulating means simultaneously.
8. In a machine forprinting and calculating numbers arranged in. a horizontal line; a printing carriage locating. the printing point; a traveling totalizer locating the calculating point; engaging mechanism connecting the printing carriage and the totallizer whereby they advance in unison for the various decimal places of a number; printing cai'riage tabulatingmeans advancing and locating the printing carriage for the highest decimal place of the next number; totalizer tabulating means retracting and locating the totalizer for the highest decimal place of the next number; disengaging mechanism disengaging the printing carriage and the totalizer to permit the operation of the said two tabulating means and to rengage the printing carriage and the totalizer after said operation; and manually operable mechanism operative upon the disengaging mechanism and the two tabulating means simultaneously.
9. Ina machine'for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locatin the print-in point; a traveling totalizer lbcating the ca culating point; a plurality of engagers upon the printing carriage adapted to connect ing numbers arranged in a horizontal line:
a printing carriage locating the printing point; a totalizer locating the calculating point; aplurality of engagers upon'the printing carriage adapted to connect the printing carriage and the totalizer whereby they advance in unison for the various decimal places of a. number; printing carriage tabulating means advancing and locating the printing carriage for the highest decimal place of the next. number; totalizer tabulating means retracting and locating the totalizer for the highest decimal place of the next number; manually operable mechanism to operate both tabulating means simultaneously; and disengaging mechanism to disengage the totalizer and its cooperating engager, to permit the independent operation of said two tabulating means and to relingage the totalizer and another engager after said operation.
11. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arrangedv in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a totalizer locating the calculating point engaging mechanism connecting the printing carriage and the totahzer whereby'they advance in unison for the various decimal places of a number; printing carriage tabulating means advancing and locating the printing carriage for the highest decimal place of the next number; totalizer tabulating means retracting and locating the totalizer for the highest decimal place of the next number; disengaging mechanism adapted to disengage the printing carriage and the totalizer to permit the operation of the said two tabulating means and to re'engage the printing carriage and the totalizerrafter said operation; and manually operable mechanism operative first, to disengage the printing carriage and totalizer, second to operate the tabulating means, and finally to reengage the printing carriage and totalizer.
12. In an adding and subtracting typewriter, the combination of a typewriter carriage for locating a printing point; a carriage bar fastened to the typewriter carriage; a set of engagers on said carriage bar; a traveling totalizer for the locating of the decimal point of calculation; and tabulating mechanism operative on both the totalizer and the set of engagers to properly locate each independently of the other.
13. In an adding and subtrating typewriter, the combination of: a typewriter carriage for the locating of the printing point; a carriage bar fastened to the typewriter carriage; a set of engagers on said carriage bar, each of said engagers being adjustably mounted on said bar; a traveling totalizer for the locating of the decimal point of calculation; a tabulating mechanism operative on the totalizer; other tabib lating mechanism operative on the set of engagers; and a single set of keys controllin both tabulating mechanisms whereby both the totalizer and the set of engagers may be located independently of each other upon the actuation of a single key.
14. In a machine printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line; a printing carriage for the location of the printing point; a decimal carriage for the location of the calculating point; connecting mechanism uniting the two carriages for the decimal places of a number; disconnecting mechanism for disconnecting the two carriages between two numbers; tabulating mechanism operative on said decimal carriage; other tabulating mechanism operative on said printing carriage; and a set of tabulator keys controlling said connecting mechanism and said tabulating n'iechanisms.
15. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line,
a printing carriage for the locating of the printing point; a decimal carriage tor the locating of the calculating point; connecting mechanism for unitin the two carriages for the decimal places of the number; a tabulator operative on the printing carriage to locate it for the new number; and means operative upon the decimal carriage, lirst, to disconnect it from the printing carriage, second, to locate it for the new number and third, to connect it again to the carriage.
16. In a machine for printing and calcu lating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage for the locating of the printing point; a decimal carriage for the locating of the decimal point; a set of engagers upon the printing carriage, each of said engagers being adapted to engage the decimal carriage whereby both the printing carriage and the decimal carriage travel in unison for the various decimal places of a number; and manually operable means for disconnecting the decimal carriage and one engager and for connecting the decimal carria e and another engager.

An adding and subtracting typewriter the combination of: a typewriter carriage for locating the printing point; a bar fastened to said typewriter carrr ge, a set of engagers on said bar. each of said engagers being adjustably mounted upon said bar; a decimal carriage for locating the decimal point of calculation; a set of tabulator keys; and tabulating mechanism operative on both the decimal carriage and set of engagers to properly locate each independently of the other.
19. In an adding and subtracting typewriter the combination of: a typewriter carriage traveling to locate the printing point; a carriage bar fastened to the type writer carriage; a traveling totalizer for the locating of the decimal point of calculation; a set of tabulator keys; and means,
controlled by said keys, operative on both' the totalizer and the carriage bar to properl y locate each independently of the other.
20. In a machine for printing and calcu lating numbers arranged in a horizontal line, the combination oi": a printing carriage for determining .the printing point; a decimal carriage tabulatable in either direction for determining the -alculating point; a set of tabulator keys; and means controlled by said tabulator keys operative on both the printing and decimal carriages to properly locate each independently of the other.
21. In an adding and subtracting typewriter the combination of: a typewriter carriage traveling to locate the printing point; a decimal carriage tabulatable in either direction to locate the decimal point of a calculation; a set of tabulator keys; and means controlled by said keys operative on both the typewriter and decimal carriages to properly locate each independently of the other.
22. In an adding and subtracting typewriter, the combination of: a typewriter carriage traveling to locate the printing point; a carriage bar fastened to the typewriter carria'ge; a decimal carriage for the locating of the decimal point in a calculation: a set of tabulator keys; and means controlled by said keys operative on both decimal carriage and said carriage bar to properly locate each independently of the other.
In an adding and subtracting typewriter. the combination of: a typewriter carriage for locating the printing point; a carriage bar fastened to said typewriter carriage; a set of engagers on said carriage bar; a decimal carriage for locating a decimal point of a calculation; a set of tabulator keys; and means controlled by said keys operative on both the decimal carriage and said set of engagers to properly locate each independently of the other.
24. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage for the locating of the printing point; a decimal carriage for the locating of the calculating point; connecting mechanism uniting the two carriages, whereby both carriages travel in unison for the decimal places of the num- I her; printing tabulating mechanism operative upon the printing carriage for advancing it and locating it for the highest figure of the next number; decimal tabulating mechanism for the locating of the decimal carriage for the next number; and manually operable means adapted to operate both tabulating mechanisms simultaneously.
In a calculating machine the combination of: a decimal carriage; a set of numeral keys; means to advance said carriage step by step upon the operation of said keys; a set of tabulator keys; and means to tabulate said decimal carriage ineither direction to a predetermined position upon the operation of one of said tabulator keys.
26. In a calculating machine the combination of: a set of digit keys; a totalizer adapted to be advanced step by step upon the operation of said digit keys; actuating mechanism for inserting numbers in said totalizer upon the operation of said digit keys; a set of tabulator keys; and a linkage connecting said tabulator keys with said tot-alizer determined position, whereby the tabulator is operative upon the totalizer both to ad vance and to retract it.
28. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal. line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; engaging mechanism connecting the two carriages whereby they advance in unison for the various decimal places of a number; printing carriage tabulating means advancing and locating the printing carriage for the highest decimal place of the next number; decimal carriage tabulating n'ieans retracting and locating the decimal 'arriage for the highest decimal place of the next number; and a set of tabulating keys to operate both tabulating means simultaneously.

In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a traveling totalizer locating the calculating point; a plurality of engagers upon the printing carriage adapted to connect the printing carriage and the totalizer whereby they advance in unison for the va rious decimal places of a number; printing carriage tabulating means advancing and locating the printing carriage for the highest decimal place of the next number; totalizer tabulating means retracting and locating the totalizer for the highest decimal place of the next number; and a set of tabulating keys operating both said tabulating means simultaneously.

In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a totalizer locating the calculating point; a plurality of engagers upon the printing carriage adapted to connect the printing carriage and the totalizer whereby they advance in unison for the various decimal places of a number; printing carriage tabulating means advancing and locating the printing carriage for the highest decimal place ofv the next number; totalizer tabulating means retracting and locating the totalizer for the highest decimal place of the next number; a set of tabulating keys operating both tabulating means simultaneously; and disengaging mechanism to disengage the totalizer and its cooperating engager, to permit the independent operation of said two tabulating means, and to reengage the totalizer and another engager after said operation.

In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line; a printing carriage locating the printng point; a totalizer locating the calculating point; engaging mechanism connecting the printing carriage and the totalizer whereby they advance in unison for the various decimal places of a number; printing carriage tabulating means advancing and locating the printing carriage for the highest decimal place of the next number; totalizer tabulating means retracting and locating the totalizer for the highest decinial place of the next number; disengaging mechanism disengaging the printing carriage and the totalizer to permit the operation of said two ta'bulating means and to rei nga-ge the printing carriage and the totalizer after said operation; and a set of tabulating keys operative first, to disengage the printing carriage from the totalizer, second, to operate the tabulating means, and finally to reiingage the printing carriage and totalizer.
38. In a calculating machine: a carriage advancing step by for the various places of operation, and a tabulator operative upon said carriage to locate it in a predetermined position, said tabulator including a plurality of keys for the various tabulator denominations, a shaft with a series of striking points arranged spirally thereon, each striking point being operable by one ofsaid tabulator keys, and a connection between said shaft and the carriage, whereby the carriage is located in a predetermined position by the operation of any of said keys,
39. In a calculating machine: a carriage adapted to be advanced step by step for the various places of operation; a set of tabulator keys; a cam for each key, connected to and operated thereby; a shaft with a set of striking points spirally attached thereto and cooperating with said cams; and a link joining the shaft and the carriage, whereby the operation of a tabulator key locates the carriage in a predetermined position.
40. In a calculating machine: a set of digit keys; a carriage'having a displaceable element mounted thereon, said element being operable by the digit keys when said carriage is in various positions, said carriage also adapted to be advanced step by step for the various places of operation; a set of tabulator keys; a cam mechanism for each of said keys, connected to and operated thereby; a shaft witha set of pairs of striking points arranged thereon, each pair attached to and cooperating with its own cam mechanism, and to be positively located thereby when operated, the various pairs of striking points being arranged spirally on said shaft; and a link joining the shaft and the carriage, whereby the operation of a tabulator key locates the carriage in a predetermined position.
41. In a calculating machine; a set of digit mg with the other of said gears; a circular dwell portion upon each of said gears, the parts being so shaped that the operation of a tabulator key brings the circular dwell upon each gear in contact with its cooperating striking point without any clearance, the shaftthus being definitely located, without limiting the movement of the gear pairs; and a link joining "the shaft and the carriage, whereby the operation of the tabulator key locates the carriage in a predetermined position.
42. In a calculating machine: a set of digit keys; a carriage having a displaceable element mounted thereon, said element being operable by the digit keys when said carriage is in various positions, said carriage also adapted to be advanced step by step for the various places of operation; a set of tabulator keys; a pair of gears for each tabulator key connected to and operated thereby; a shaft; a spirally arranged set of pairs of striking points upon said shaft, one
pair for each of said gear pairs, one striking point of the pair cooperating with one of said gears and the other striking point cooperating with the other of said gears; a circular dwell portion upon each of said gears, the parts being so shaped that the operation of a tabulator key brings the circular dwell upon each gear in contact with its cooperating striking point without any clearance, the shaft thus being definitely located, without limiting the movement of the gear pairs; and a link joining the shaft and the carriage, whereby the operation of a tabulator key locates the carriage in a predetenmined position.
43. In a machine for printing'and calculating numbers arranged in. a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; disconnecting mechanism to disconnect the two carriages; and a set of tabulator keys each operative upon the disconnecting mechanism and also operative upon the two carriages to tabulate them.
44. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: aprinting carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating-the calculating point; a bar, movable to disconnect the two carriages from each other; and
a set of tabulator keys, each adapted to move said bar and to tabulate the two carriages.

In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; a set of engagers upon the printed carriage; an engaging tongue upon the decimal carriage whereby the two carriages are advanced together for the various decimal places of a number; and means to disconnect the engaging tongue from the printing carriage engagers to permit the independent tabulation of the two carriages.

In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; a set of engagers upon the printing carriage; an engaging tongue upon the decimal carriage spring-urged to engage the said engagers; and disconnecting mechanism retracting said tongue against the force of said spring from said engagers to thereby permit the independent tabulation of the two carriages.
47. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; a set of engagers upon the printing carriage; an engagingtongue upon the decimal carriage normally tending to engage said engagers, whereby the two carriages are advanced together for the various decimal places of a number; a dis engaging bar operativ'e upon said tongue to disengage the same from the engagers and a set of keys for operating first, saiddisengaging bar, and second for tabulating the two carriages independently of each other.
48. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; a set of engagers upon the printing carriage; an engaging tongue upon the decimal carriage cooperating with said set of engagers whereby the carriages travel in unison for the various decimal places of a number; a spring urging the engaging tongue to engage the engagers; a disengaging bar operative to withdraw the engaging tongue from its cooperating printing carriage engager against the force of the springs; printing carriage tabulating means operative upon the printing carriage to advance and locate same for the highest decimal place of the next number; decimal carriage tabulating means retracting and locating the decimal carriage for the highest decimal place of the next number; and a set of tabulating keys each operative upon the printing carriage tabulating means, the decimal carriage ta'bulating means, and the disengaging bar, simultaneously.
49. In a calculating machine: a set of digit keys; a master wheel operable by said keys; a totalizer adapted to be operated by said master wheel in various places of operation whereby a number may be inserted in said totalizer, said totalizer advancing step by step for the various places of operation; and a tabulator operative upon said totalizer to locate it in a predetermined position, said tabulator including a plurality of keys for the various tabulator denominations, a shaft with a series of striking points arranged spirally thereon, each striking point being operable by one of said tabulator keys; and a connection between said shaft and the totalizer, whereby the totalizer is located in a predetermined position by the operation of said keys.
50. In a calculating machine: a set of digit keys; a master wheel operable by said keys; a totalizer adapted to be operated by said master wheel in various places of operation, whereby a number may be inserted in said totalizer, said totalizer adapted to be advanced step by step for the various places of operation; a set of tabulator keys; a cam for each key connected to and operated thereby; a shaft with a set of striking points spirally attached thereto and cooperating with said arms, and a link joining the shaft and totalizer, whereby the operation of the tabulator key locates the totalizer in a predetermined position.
51. In a calculating machine: a Set of digit keys; a master wheel operable by said keys; a totalizer adapted to be operated by said master Wheel in various places of operation, whereby a number may be inserted insaid totalizer, said totalizer adapted to be advanced step by step for the various laces of operation; a set of tabulator keys; a cam for each of said keys connected to and operated thereby; a shaft with a set of pairs of striking points arranged thereon, each pair attached to and cooperating with its own cam, and to be positively located thereby when operated, the various pairs of striking points being arranged spirally on said shaft; and a link joining the shaft and the totalizer, whereby the operation of a tabulator key locates the totalizer in a predetermined position.
In a calculating machine: a set of digit keys; a master wheel operable by said keys; a totalizer adapted to be operated by said master wheel in various places of operation, whereby a number may be inserted in said totalizer, said totalizer adapted to be advanced step by step for the various places of operation; a set of tabulator keys; a pair of gears for each tabulator key connected to and operated thereby; a shaft; a pair of striking points upon said shaft for each of said gear pairs, one striking p'oint cooperating with one of said gears and the other striking point cooperating with the other of said gears; a circular dwell portion upon each of said gears, the parts being so shaped that the operation of a tabulator key brings the circular dwell upon each gear in contact with its cooperating striking point without any clearance, the shaft thus being definitely located, without limiting the movement of the gear pairs; and a link joining the shaft and the totalizer,-. whereby the operation of the tabulator key locates the totalizer in a predetermined position.

In a calculating machine: a set-of digit keys; a master wheel operable by said keys; a totalizer adapted to be operated by said master wheel in various places of operation, whereby a number may be inserted in said totalizer, said totalizer adapted to be advanced step by step for the various places of operation; a set of tabulator keys; a pair of gears for each tabulator key connected to and operated thereby; a shaft; a set of pairs of striking points spirally arranged upon said shaft one pair for each of said gear pairs, one striking point of the pair cooperating with one of said gears and the other striking point cooperating with the other of said gears; a circular dwell portion upon each of said gears, the parts being so shaped that the operation of a tabulator key brings the circular dwell upon each gear in contact with its coiiperating striking point without any. clearance, the shaft thus being definitely located, without limiting the movement of the gear pairs; and a link joining the shaft and the totalizer, whereby the operation of a tabulator key locates the totalizer in a predetermined position.
54. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a totalizer locating the calculating point; disconnecting mechanism to disconnect the printing carriage and the totalizer; and a set of tabulator keys each operative upon vthe disconnecting mechanism andalso operative upon the printing carriage and totalizer to tabulate them.
55. In a machine for printing and calculating members arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a totalizer locating the calculating point; a bar, movable to disconnect the printing carriage and totalizer; and a set of tabulator keys, each adapted to move'sald bar and to tabulate the printing carriage and the totalizer.
56. In a machine for printing and calculatlng numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carnage locating the printing point; a totalizer locating the calculat totalizer are advanced together for the various decimal places of the number; and means to disconnect the engaging tongue from the printing carriage engagers to permit the independent tabulation of the printing carriage and totalizer.
57. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a totalizer locating the calculating point; a set of engagers upon the printing carriage; an engaging tongue upon the totalizer, spring-urged to engage the said engagers; and disconnecting mecha'nism retracting said tongue against the force of said spring from said engagers to thereby permit the independent tabulatioinot the printing carriage and totalizer.
58. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal ing point; a totalizer locating the calculating point; a set of engagers upon the printing carriage; an engaging tongue upon the totalizer normally tending to engage the said engagers, whereby the printing carriage and totalizer are advanced together for the various decimal places of a number; a disengaging bar operative upon said tongue to disengage the same from the engagers; and a set of tabulating keys first for operating the disengaging bar, and second for tabulating the printing carriage and the totalizer independently of each other.
In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locatin the printing point; a totalizer locating tie calculating point; a set of engagers upon the printing carriage; an engaging tongue upon the totalizcr cooperating with the said set of engagers whereby the printing carriage and totalizer travel in unison for the various decimal places of a number; a spring urging the engaging tongue to engage the engagers; a disengaging bar operative to with draw the engaging tongue from its cooperating printing carriage engager against the force of the spring; printing carriage tabm lating means operative upon the printing carriageto advance and locate same for the highest decimal place of the next nmnber; totalizer tabulating means retracting and locating the totalizer for the highest decimal place of the next number; and a set of tabulating keys each operative upon the printing carriage tabulating means, the totalizer tabulating means, and the disengaging bar. similltaneously.
60. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line, the combination of: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point, said printing rarriage and decimal carriagetraveling at the same speed together through a. predetermined zone fOI tlIQ various places of a number; means to disconnect the decimal carriage from the printing. carriage by the motion of the printing carriage beyond said zone; a set of keys; and a linkage connecting said decimal carriage and said keys, Whereby said decimal carriage may be returned to a predetermined point upon the operation of one of said keys.
61. In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line, the combination of: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; said printing carriage and decimal carriage traveling together through a predetermined zone for the various places of a number; means to disconnect the decimal carriage from the printing carriage by the motion of the printing carriage beyond said zone, said means including a striking cam operative upon the decimal carriage to disconnect same from the rinting carriage Whenever the decimal carriage reaches the end of said zone; a set of typewriter keys; and a linkage operated by said decimal carriage, and adapted to be operated by any one of said keys whereby said decimal. carriage may be returned to a predetermined point upon the operation of any of said keys.
62. In a calculating machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line, the combination of: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point, said printing carriage and decimal carriage traveling together through a predetermined zone for the various places of a number; a set of engagers upon the printing carriage; an engaging tongue upon the decimal carriage to connect the printing carriage and the decimal carriage; a striking cam opera.- tive upon the engaging tongue to disconnect same from the engagers by the motion of the decimal carriage beyond said zone; a linkage connected to said decimal carnage: and a set of tabulator keys operative Said linkage whereby said decimal cary e returned to a predetermined p f "P the 0 pration of any of" said keys.

In a machine for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printg point a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; said printing carriage and decimal carriage traveling together through a predetermined zone for the various places of a. number; means to disconnect the decimal carriage from the printing carriage by the motion of the printing carriage beyond said zone; said means includ ing a striking cam operative upon the decimal carriage to disconnect the same from the printing carriage whenever the decimal carriage reaches the end of said zone; and tab ulating means to bring the said decimal carriage again within its zone and locating it for the highest decimal place of the next number, and again connecting the decimal and printing carriages.

In a machine for printing and cal culating numbers arranged in a horizontal line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; said printing carriage and decimal carriage traveling together through a predetermined zone for the various places of a number; a set of engagers upon the printing carriage; an engaging tongue upon the decimal carriage to connect the printing carriage engagers and the decimal carriage; a striking cam operative upon the engaging tongue to disconnect the same from the engagers by the motion of the decimal carriage beyond its zone; and tabulating means to bring the said decimal carriage again within its zone, to locate it for the highest decimal place of the next number, and again to connect the decimal carriage and the printing carriage.

In a machine "for printing and calculating numbers arranged in a horizmital line: a printing carriage locating the printing point; a decimal carriage locating the calculating point; said printing carriage and decimal carriage traveling together through a predetermined zone for the various places of a number; means to disconnect the decimal carriage from the printing carriage by the motion of the printing carriage beyond said zone; and a set of tabulatmg keys to bring the said decimal carriage again within its zone, to locate it for the highest decimal place of the next number and again to connect the decimal carriage with the printing carriage.
