Application filed June 6,
To all whom it may concern w Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Astoria, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Door Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door latches, and more particularly to door latches of the pivoted type, the'primary object of the invention being to provide a combined latch and opener, which will operate to unlatch the door when pressure is brought to bear thereon, to accomplish the opening result.
' Another object of the invention is to provide a fastener of this character which will be operated by either an upward or downward movement of the handle, thereby facilitating the opening of the closuresuppliec with the fastener, by persons unfamiliar. with the operation thereof.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevatiopal view of a closure disclosing the fastener as applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Figure 1.,
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates a closure which is of the swinging type, and the reference character 6 designates a door jamb, to which the keeper 7, forming an important feature of the invention is secured.
The fastener embodies a relatively long rod formed with a handle portion 8, right angled arms 9, bearing members 10 and a latching end 11, the latching member 11 lying in the same plane with the handle portion 8, so that the latching end will be moved relatively, with the movement of the handle portion 8.
Bracke me be s 2 e br e p ions of 1922. Sea No. 566,328.
the fastener and secure the fastener to the closure as clearly shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, the bracket members being also constructed to provide bearings for the fastener to permit the fastener to be rotated.
The keeper comprises a body portion 13ha V. ing tapered side walls 14: formed with inwardly extending flanges 15. Securedwithin the keeper and disposed intermediate the flanges 15, is a stop member 16which has tapered walls 17 and a relatively straight wall 'l8, the straight wall 18 acting as an abutment for the latching end 11, as shown by Figure 2 of the drawing.
In order that the latching end 11 of the fastener will be guided to its position behind the wall 18, spring members 19 are provided, which spring members have outward ly curved ends 20 that contact with the latching end 11 when the same moves over the inclined surfaces 17 of the. member 16 and guide the end 11 to its locking position.
These spring members 19 also provide retainingelements for normally holding the latching end 11 of the rod in its locked position.
In'the use of the device, it is obvious that I should it be desired to movethe closure to its open position, it is only necessary to move the handle 8 of the latch memberupwardly or downwardly against the tensions of the springs 19, whereupon the latching end 11 of the fastener may be moved to disengage the wall 18.
It might be further stated that one end f the latching member'extends laterally as at' 21, to prevent the fastener from being removed from a position within the bracket members 12.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is i V In a closure fastener, a pivoted locking member having a right angled end providing a locking section, a keeper comprising a body portion having inclined side edges, flanges extending inwardly from the side edges, a stop member having tapered walls a straight wall at the rear there'of,spring members having their free ends curved out;
Wardly and lying adjacent to the side elges of the stop member, said spring members adapted to contactowith the locking section thepresence of two Witnesses.
ofthe pivoted locking member to hold the I CHARLES F. LEE. locking member against lateral movement Witnesses: hen the locking member moves behind the WQC. MCGORKLE, straight wall of the stop. M. WV. PHILLIPS.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have here affixed my signature in
