a. w. DUVALL COMBINED BROOM PRESSING AND NAILING MACHINE Filed June 27. 1921 TENT Ff' l tild.
GEORGE W. DUVALL, OE DAVENPORT, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED STATES BROOLI COMPANY, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA, A CORPORATION OF IO'SJVA.
COMBINED BROOM PRESSING AND NAILING MACHINE.
Application filed June 27, 1921. Serial No. 486,715.
TaaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DUvALL, a
resident of Davenport, in the county of Scott 7 and State of Iowa, and a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Broom Pressing and Nailing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a combined broom press ing and nailing machine. I
This invention embodies the idea of combining in one machine the pressing and nalling together, of metal case brooms and the like.
Heretofore this work hasbeen performed in separate operations and largely by hand.
WVith the method now generally employed for making metal case brooms the na1ls are driven through the band one at a t1me by hand. The broom is then placed 1n a machine and pressed. It is quite plain that nails thus driven by hand are likely to tip over in pressing and further it is impossible to hold the broom tightly together when made in this manner.
One of the dominant features of my present invention resides in driving the nails into the broom while it is under its maximum compression, the nails being clinched at that so moment prevent any relaxation after the broom is nailed which differs from the hand nailing method where one nail at a time is driven and it requires many blows of-the hammer on a single nail; in other words my present invention includes the driving of a plurality of nails at a single stroke whlle the broom is under pressure.
In the accompanying drawings; Fig. 1 is a View in perspective of the essential elements of the device required to perform the work as outlined above. V v
Fig. 2 shows the main elements of a metal case broom assembled'ready to press and nail together in the machine.
Fig. 3 shows the finished broom.
A quantity of broom corn shown by number 1 is inserted within the band 2. This thin metal band #2 is approximately circular in form. It is the butt or stalk end of the corn which is inserted within theband. The handle 3 is then placed in the center of the broom corn at the stalk endof same, and the broom is ready for pressing and nailing. It should be understood that the assembling 55' of the broom elements above described is done within the machine as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. l.
After the broom has been assembled within the press as shown the operator then presses the foot treadle 4: which throws the machine into operation thus pressing the broom into the form shown in Fig. 3, and nailing the same together while under pressure.
The numeral 5 is the main frame within which is the vertically sliding head 6. A roller 7 is rotatably mounted on a shaft, which shaft is secured in the projection of the head 6 at its lower side.
The roller 7 rests on the cam 8. This cam is secured to a shaft rotatably held within hearing A and B of frame 5. Secured to one end of this camshaft is the master gear 9. The gear 9 meshes with the gear 10. rear 10 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 11. It will be seen that gear 11 is provided with one part of a dental coupling. The other half of the dental coupling 12 is mounted on the shaft 11 and while it rotates in unison with the shaft, is free to move longitudinally on the same. A disk 13 is attached to shaft 11. Mounted around shaft 11 and between disk 13 and coupling 12 there is the compres sion coil spring 14:. This spring serves to push the two dental coupling members together except when they are forcibly held apart.
The rods15 and 16 are pivoted to bar 17 at their lower ends. This bar 17 is secured to frame 5. Pins are secured to each of the upper ends of the rods 15 and 16. The pins extend into the groove in dental coupling member 12. Mounted between the rods 15 and 16 is a roller 28 free to rotate on its shaft 18. The gear 9 is provided with a projection 19 which holds the roller away from the gear, and by means of rods 15 and 16 holds the members of the dental coupling apart. The lower end of shaft 18 is provided with an arm 20. This arm is connected to the crank 21 by the rod 22. Crank 21 is attached to the shaft 23. This shaft extends to the opposite side of the machine and has attached to it the treadle 4L.
Belt pulley 2 1 and pinion 25 are mounted on and revolve in unison with shaft 26. Pinion 25 meshes with gear 27. Gear 27 is attached to shaft 11. Assuming motion to be imparted to belt wheel 2 then all gears run continuously except gears 9 and 10. To cause these to revolve the operator presses down on treadle 4. This action through the mechanical means shown draws the roller 28 off the narrow projection 19 thus allowing the spring 1 to force the dental coupling members together. The operator having removed his foot from the treadle 4E the spring 29 pushes the shaft 18 and the roller 28 to its original position. The dental cou pling having been locked together the gear nine will make one revolution and at the last of the revolution the projection 19 will force the coupling apart thus bringing 10 and 9 to a state of rest until the operation is repeated. During the revolution mentioned the cam 8 revolves forcing the roller '7 and the heads 6 upward thus compressing the broom. The form of cam 8 is such as to'hol d the compressed broom under pressure long enough for the nailing device to perform its work while driving the nails through the band 2 as shown in Fig. 3.
Mounted on the frame 5 are the brackets 30 and 31. These brackets serve as guides to retain in a vertically slidable position the punchhead 32. This head is operatively connected by the eccentric rod 33 and 34 with the eccentrics and 36. Attached to the head 32 are any desired number of punches 37. These punches move vertically and in unison with the head 32. Their function is to descend on the tops or heads and drive or press them through the band into the broom corn. The nails are conveyed from the nail hopper 3S and delivered under the punches by the tubes 39. Vhat is known as the pick-off of any well-known design isemployed adjacent to the hopper to insure only one. nail at a time being delivered below the plunger-s.
The eccentrics 35 and 36 are secured on shaft 40. This shaft revolves in bearings C and D. The chain-wheel 41 is rotatably mounted on shaft 40. Wheel 4-1 by means of the chain-belt 4L2 revolves continuously and in unison with shaft 26. The eccentrics 35 and 36 are caused to make one revolution and then rest by any of the well-known knock-out devices, now on the market. Such a device is shown by the numbers 43, 44, and 1-5. In order to trip the knock-out and the nailing attachment in motion while the broom is under compression the trip rod 46 is attached to head 6. As head 6 nears the limit of its upward travel the rod 4E6 comes in contact with the knockout device and sets the same in motion.
With this invention the broom is tightly pressed and the nails are driven while the broom is under pressure which insures that they go straight throughth'e broom. By using nails of the right length the points will come in contact with the lower portion of the band and turn and clinch tightly onthe broom corn or other fibre. The broom is then turned over and the operation of pressing and driving another set of nails is repeated.
