STAPLE FORMING AND DISCHARGING MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, VERNON Home, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Staple Forming and Discharging Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to wire working machinery, and particularly to means for use in conjunction with wire-fence machines or the like for successively forming staples from sections of wire fed thereto, discharging such staples from such means and clamping them about the intersecting portions of a fabric being woven.
The object of my invention is the provi sion of mechanism of this class, which is simple and efficient in its operation and so constructed as to occupy a very narrow space in the machine, thus adapting a plurality of the same to be used in connection with the manufacture of chicken fabric or the like in which the warp wires or a portion of them are disposed closely together.
Further objects of the invention, as well as the operation, construction and arrangement of the parts thereof, are fully described in the following specification, and two forms of the same are illustrated in the "accompanying drawings, in which,

My invention in its broader aspect may be embodied in different forms of mechanisms and in the present instance I have shown and described two forms, a preferred form, which is illustrated in Figs. 2 to 8 of the drawings, and a modified form, which is illustrated in Figs. 9 to lat. Referring to the preferred form of my 1nvention,,1 designates the holder thereof, which has its upper surface preferably inclined, shown, and vertically grooved or recessed from its rear end forwardly, as at 2, Figs. 2 and 4, to receive the plunger This plunger is shown as being provided in its sides with longitudinal grooves l for receiving complemental guide ribs 5 formed on the walls of the holder groove 2, and is provided at its forward end with the stapledischarge nose 6, which works into a stapledischarge way or shallow extension 7 of the groove 2.
Mounted at the forward end of the holder immediately above the staple-discharge way 7 therein is a staple cylinder or rotary staple magazine 8, which is disposed longitudinally of said discharge way and has end trunnions journaled in bearings 9, 9 rising from the holder top. This cylinder is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending circumferential grooves 10, in the present case four in number, the side walls of which are concaved or half rounded to adapt each to hold a staple drawn therein. When the cylinder 1s turned these grooves successively move into register with the staple- The wire thread from which the staples are formed is shown at a in Fig. 3, and feeds upwardly through a cutaway portion ll in one side of the holder 1 at the forward end thereof and an opening 12 in a cutter bar or plate 13 and thence through an openingor cutaway portion 14 in advance of a groove 10 in the side of the cylinder 8 which is contiguous to the plate 13. This cutter-bar or plate is carried by the holder 1 for reciprocatory movements in a plane parallel to the axis of the cylinder 8 and is normally held at its limit of forward movement by the action thereon of a contraction spring 15, which attaches at its forward end .to the rear end of the holder 1 and at its rear end to a pin or screw 16 projecting from the rear end of the cutter-bar. As the cutter-bar moves rearwardly from its limit of forward movement the section of wire previously fed to the opening or cutaway portion 14,- of the holder is severed from its thread due to the opposed shearing action of the upper end 0 the wall of the opening 12 and the fixed cutter part 17 at the lower end of the opening 14, see Fig. 3. As the section is severed from its thread it is engaged midway be tween its ends by a stud 18 projecting inwardly from the cutter-bar 13 and drawn thereby within a registering groove 10 in the contiguous side of the cylinder 8 and formed into a staple Z). The cutter-bar 13 is caused to move rearwardly with the plunger 3 during the last portion of the rearward movement of such plunger due to a stud or pin 19 projecting from a boss 20, rising from said plunger, and working in a slot 21 in the plate, as shown.
A ratchet-lever 22 is loosely mounted on the rear trunnion of the cylinder 8 with its toothed surface held in yielding contact with the contiguous toothed end of the cylinder, due to the action of the coiled compression spring 23 thereon, thus causing this ever, when oscillated in the direction of engagement of such teeth, to move the cylinder therewith, and when oscillated in the opposite direction to have movement relative to the cylinder.
The lever 22 has properly timed oscillations imparted thereto to intermittently impart a quarter turn to the cylinder 8, should it be provided with four grooves 10, and then to return to its starting position, by the reciprocatory movement of an operating-bar 24-, which has slotted connection with the outer end of the lever 22, as shown at 25, Fig. 7 and also with the outer end the lever of each of the other staple forming and discharging devices associated with the loom, whereby movements are imparted in unison to the cylinders of the several devices. The bar 2 1 works through a guide 26 at one side of the machine frame 27, see Fig. 1, and has reciprocatory movements imparted thereto due to a roller 28 which is carried at its under side near one end working in a cam-groove 29 formed circumferentially in a drum or roll 30. This drum or roll has its shaft ends mounted in bearings 31, 31 rising from one side of the machine frame 27, and mounted on the shaft therewith is a ratchet-pinion 32, which, when rotated in one direction, is adapted to rotate the drum therewith and when rotated in the other direction to turn freely relative to the drum. The pinion 32 meshes with and has a complete rotation imparted thereto in each direction of movement of a rack-bar 33, which has reciprocation imparted thereto as hereinafter described.
The cam-groove 29 is so formed that the roller 28 Wlll travel in a neutral zone 0 thereof (F i 8) during the first portion of the forward stroke of the plunger 3 and cutter-bar 13, or until such bar has moved forward suiiiciently to move the staple forming stud 18 thereof free from the registering groove 10 of the cylinder. When the cylinder is thus free to turn, the roller 28 enters the cam portion (Z of the groove 29, which effects a movement of the bar 24. to throw the lever 22 attached thereto in the proper direction to rotate the cylinder 8 to move a staple-filled groove thereof into the path of movement of the discharge nose (3 of the plunger. During the remainder of the rotation of the cam-roll the roller 28 travels back to the neutral portion 0 of the cam groove through the cam portion 0 thereof, thus returning the bar 24: and lever 22 to their normal or starting positions. During this return movement of the bar 24 and lever the plunger is acting on the registering staple to discharge it from the cylinder 8 and holder 1 and to clamp it about the alining parts of the fabric being woven.
In Fig. 1 is illustrated a simple mechanism for intermittently feeding lengths of wire to the staple former and operating the plunger 3 and rack-bar 33, which mechanism is similar to that disclosed in my former United States Letters Patent No. 879,965. In this figure 3-it may designate a driveshaft, which carries a gear 35 for meshing with the two opposing gears 36 and 37. On the former shaft is mounted a semi-gear 38, which meshes with a semi-piston 39 on the shaft 4.0, and through it communicates rotation to the gear 4L1, which drives the small gear 42 through the medium of the idlergear The gear 42 is carried by one of a pair of feed-rolls 4st between which the wire (6 passes and is frictionally gripped to cause it to be fed to the forming apparatus when said rolls are rotated, thus causing a properly timed intermittent movement to be communicated to said wire from a continuous rotation of the gear l\lounted on the shaft with the gear 36 is an eccentric carrying an eccentric rod 46, which connects with toggles 17 and through them imparts reciprocatory movements to a table 418, which is mounted for movement on a portion of the machine frame 27 and in turn connects with the plungers 3 of the several stapleforming and discharging devices of the maits chine through the medium of links t9 and imparts the requisite reciprocations in unison thereto, and also imparts rotation to the raclcbar 33. and as soon the staple forming stud 18 thereon has moved out of the reglstermg grooves 10 of the cylinder 8, and prior to the entrance of the staple-discharging nose 6 of the plunger into a registering groove of such cylinder, the roller 28 on the bar 24 enters and passes through the portion (Z of the groove 29 in the roll 30 and moves such bar to throw the levers 22 to which it is attached so as to impart a sufficient movement to the associated staplecarrying cylinders S to move the next staple-carrying groove thereof in register with the advancing discharge nose 6 of the plunger, and at the same time moving an empty groove 10 into register with the staple forming stud 18 to permit a staple to be drawn therein on the next rearward movement of the cutter-bar 13. the continued forward movement of the plunger the discharge-nose (3 thereof enters the staple filled groove which is in register therewith and effects an 616Ct1011 of the staple therefrom and clamps it about the alining portions of the fabric being woven, and at the same time the roller 28 on the bar 2-1- traverses the length of the portion (1 of the cam-groove 29, thus returning the bar 24 and lever 22 to their normal positions. A
length of the wire a is fed to the holder while the cutter-bar 13 is at rest by the properly timed action of the wire-feeding mechanism.
It is thus apparent that I have provided a staple forming and discharging mechanism Which is of compact form, thus enabling a plurality of the same to be placed side by on; F the staple receiving gate, which is pivoted to the holder as at f, G an arm fixedly projecting therefrom, and H the cam-actuated gate-operating bar, which attaches to the arm C of the gate. The gate F is provided on the under side thereof, when in horizontal position, with a longitudinally ext-ending groove 9 into which the wire sections is drawn and formed into U-shape when the gate is in vertical position, as shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 12, by the action of the stud E on such section, and from which the staple is discharged when the gate is in reclining or horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 11. hen the gate is up the stud E works through a slot h therein and projects outwardly through the groove 9 a sufficient distance to engage and draw a section of wire therein when the cutter-bar is moved rearwardly. lVith this construction the cam-groove in the roller actuating the movements of the bar at describes a course substantially like that shown in Fig. 1%. \Vith this form of cam-groove, the bar H is moved to throw the gate into staple-discharging po sition during the first portion of the forward movement of the plunger by reason of the roller (not shown) on said bar traveling through the cam portion 2' of the cam-groove. The roller then enters a neutral portion j of the groove and travels therein during the period of discharge of the staple from the not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a holder, a part intermittently movable to receive a staple in one position and have it discharged therefrom in another position, means for moving said part for such purposes, a plunger slidingly carried by said holder and movable to eject a staple from said part, and a member carried by said holder and movable by said plunger for a portion only of its stroke, and adapted to draw a wire section into said part to form a staple therein.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a holder having a suitable discharge-way in its upper portion, a rotatable member carried by the holder contiguous to the side of such discharge-way and intermediate its ends, said member being adapted to move staples from forming position to discharging position, and mechanism operative to cooperate with said mem her to form staples therein in one position of its movements and to discharge the same therefrom at another position in its movement, and means for intermittently rotating such member.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a holder having a staple discharge-way therein, staple forming and discharging parts carried by such holder, a pivotally movable member carried by such holder adjacent one side of said. way with its axis parallel thereto and adapted to move staples from forming to discharging position, and to cooperate with the forming part to form staples, means controlling the movements of said forming and discharging parts, and means controlling the movements of said member. v

In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a holder, a cylinder carried by said holder and having staplereceiving sockets provided therein, a ratchet arm in yielding engagement with an end of said cylinder and adapted when oscillated to impart intermittent rotation to the cylin der, cam means controlling the movements of said arm, means for feeding lengths of wire to said holder, means carried by said holder and movable to sever such lengths and to draw the same into the cylinder to form staples, means for ejecting the staples from the cylinder when moved by the cylinder to a different position from that in which they were formed, and mechanism, for imparting operative movements to said cam mechanism and said staple-forming and ejecting means.
7 5. In an apparatus of the class described, 1
a holder, a plate mounted 011 the side of such holder for reciprocatory movements, said plate having a staple forming projection on its inner lace, a plunger reclprocally carried by said holder and eoacting with said plate to impart movements thereto during a portion of the movements of such plunger, a pivotally movable staple carrying member mounted on such holder with its axis disposed in a plane parallel to the plane of movement of such plunger, said member being adapted to cooperate with the projection on such plate to form a staple therein and means for moving said member on its pivot to move the staples carried thereby from forming to discharging position.
6. In an apparatus of the class described, a holder having its top grooved to form it guideway longitudinally thereof, a staple discharging plunger movable in said guideway, a staple carrying member pivotally carried by the holder adjacent to such guideway and having its axis disposed in parallelism therewith, said member being adapted to cooperate with a male staple forming part to form a staple and to move the formed staple from forming to discharging position, means for moving such member, and means intermittently movable to cooperate with said member to form a staple therein.
7. In an apparatus of the class described, a holder having a staple discharge-way therein, a staple discharging plunger movable in said way, a male staple forming part carried by said holder and reciprocally movable in one direction by the plunger, a pivotally movable member for moving staples from forming to discharging posi tion and which cooperates with said male staple forming part to form staples, said member being disposed adjacent to such guide-way and having its axis parallel thereto, and means controlling the movements of said member.
8. In an apparatus of the class'described, the combination of a holder having a staple discharge-way therein, a pivotally movable staple 'rarrying member mounted at one side of said way with its axis parallel thereto, and adapted to move staples from forming to discharging position, means for cooperating with said member to form staples therein, means movable in said way to dis charge the formed staples from such member, and means for intermittently moving said member.

In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a holder having a staple discharge-way therein, a pivotally movable member mounted adjacent to one side of such discharge-way with its axis parallel thereto, and having a plurality of peripheral longitudinally extending grooves adapted to be moved into register with said dischargeway as the member is rotated, means for intermittently rotating said member, and mechanism having a part movable to cooperate with said member to intermittently form staples in the grooves thereof and a staple discharge part which operates in said way and through the registering grooves of said member.
10. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a holder having an inclined discharge-Way therein, a member rotatably mounted adjacent to such Way with its axis parallel thereto and adapted to move staples from forming to discharging position, means carried by the holder and movable to cooperate with said member to form staples therein, a plunger movable in said way and adapted to discharge staples from said member, and means for rotating such member.
11. In an apparatus of the class described, a holder, a rotary staple magazine mounted on the top of such holder, a part carried by said holder at the side of said magazine and movable to cooperate with said magazine to form Wire sections into staples, said part having a longitudinal slot therein, a staple discharging plunger reciprocally movable beneath the said magazine to discharge the formed staples therefrom and having a part operating in said slot whereby a staple forming movement is imparted to said part from the plunger, means yieldingly acting on said part to normally retain it in one position, means for controlling the movements of said magazine, and means for reciprocating the plunger.
