BROODER.
Application filed .Tune 9, 1922.
T 0 all whom/t may concern:
Be it known that I, NARDEN Gr. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mason City, in the county of Mason and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Broeders, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to improvements in houses for fowls and the like, the general lobject of the invention being to provide a movable lpartition for varying the size of the receiving compartment of the house so as to regulate the temperature therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for supporting the partition in its adjusted position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement ofthe several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, re` ference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which n Figure 1 is a front view of a house constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an end view.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 4 is a transverse section. f
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view of the rear of the device showing the Ventilating means. l
Figure 6 isa perspective view of one of the cross pieces 12.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of oneof the doors.y
In these views 1 indicates the side walls of the building which may be of any desired size and type, the walls being formed with the usual doors and windows, though I prefer to provide the doors with wooden parts 2 and parts 3 formedl of galvanized iron and wire mesh, the parts 2 sliding in grooves in the door frame and operated by f chains 4 so that the door openings may be entirely closed by the galvanized iron part and the wooden part or left open with the open part covered by the screen.
The floor 5 is movably supported by the Serial No. 567.085.
chains 6 which are connected to the corners of the floor and pass-over suitable pulleys 7 to a shaft 8 which is rotatably supported in the building and is provided with handle 9 for rotating it and with ratchet mechanism 10 for preventing retrograde movement thereof.
By this arrangement of parts the floor can bel raised and lowered so as to vary the space within the building and thus regulate the temperature. For instance, on a cold night the floor would be raised to make the space occupied by the chickens small so that the heat from the bodies would hold the restricted space at the proper temperature. During the dayl the floor would be lowered so as to give the chickens more room and to lower the temperature by increasing the space to be heated.
Besides the ratchet means I may provide means for holding the floor in adjusted position, such means consisting of racks 11 placed along the walls and cross pieces v12 having beveled ends for engaging the rack teeth and upon which the floor rests when said pieces are in position.
The invention may be used with heated buildings,`as shown in thedrawings. The lamp is shown at 13 and is pivotally supported in the support 111. The chimney 15 of the lamp extends into an elbow 16. 'A pipe 17 connects this elbow with a heating drum 18 and a pipe l19 leads from the drum to the outside of the building. A damper 2O is placed in the pipeline to control the passage of heat. The drum must be placed above the highest point that the floor is to occupy so that said drum will al vays rcinain in the occupied space.
I may also provide Ventilating means for the device and in this case the buildingis provided with air holes 22 which are located above the highest point which the floor will reach and a gate 23, having per- .orations therein, is adapted to control the passage of air through said holes.
It is thought from the foregoingdescription that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that suehehanges fall With` in the seopeoi the appended claim. /Vhat I' Claim is A building `oi: the class described compris- 5 ing a vertically movable floor, a shaft, means for rotating the saine, chains connecting the cross Apieces havingbeveled ends for engag- 10 ing the racks. and upon which the Hoor rests.`
` Y n testimony whereof I my signature; .shaft with the floor and means for holding l n WARDJEKN e. CAMPBELL.l
