Description
I C. PETEIRSEN CORSET GLosURE Filed March 2,
Patented Aug. 7, 1923.

consum cnosunn.
Application led March 5%, 1522.'
To all whom. t may concern.'
Be it known Jthat I, CHRISTINE Pn'rnnsnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset Closures, of
' which the following is a specification.`
` the lacings.
This invention relates to corset closures, and comprises particularly a novel shield attachment or construction adapted to be applied to corsets for the purpose of covering rIt is old to provide a corset closure with a shield for covering the space between the margins which are bridged by the lacings, but these shields have ordinarily been made in one piece, which is objectionable for various reasons, one of which is that it is difficult to adjust or properly position the shield, so that it becomes wrinkled or misplaced. By means of the present invention a shield is provided which is not open to these objections, but which is capable ci an adjustment corresponding to the adjustment of the corset lacings, the same laces being used to adjust the corset.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view' of' the corset as worn.
' Fig. 2 is a front view of a section of a corset provided with the shield. Fig. 3 is a back or inside view oi Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top or edge view.
rIhe general construction of the corset may be of any suitable type. I show a corset which is laced at thefront by laces 6, with r a section of elastic laces 7 at the bottom.
The laces 6 may be made in two sets connecting respectively the upper and lower parts of the corset. The corset will be closed by a line of hooks 8 in a well known manner, between the body of the corset and a strip 9 which has eyelets 10 to receive the laces above referred to, these laces connecting said strip to an opposite strip 11 having eyelets This structure is To form the shield I provide ka pair oi flaps 13 one of which is sewed along its fixed edge as at 14 to the strip 9 and the other of which is sewed along its fixed edge as at 15 to the body 16 ot the corset. The free or meeting edges of the ilaps 13 may be provided with steels or stays indicated at 17, and with a plurality of eyelets land 18a, the latter being located near the upper end of the flaps and the former near the lower yor wrinkled.
Serial No. 540,386.
end. -I show three eyelets 18 at the lower end of the flaps, but one or any other number of eyelets may be used on each iiap. i
The purpose of the flaps 13 is to cover or bridge the space crossed by the laces 6, and the edges of the flaps 13 are capable of being drawn together in all adjustments of the laces. rthis drawing together is effected by the samelaces 6 as are used for adjusting the corset, and I accomplish this result by eX- tending` the laces 6 through the eyelets 18 and 18a of the flaps, the upper section of the laces extending through the eyelets 18a and the lower section of the laces extending through the eyelets 18. That is to say, these laces extend through the eyelets of the corset body and also through the eyelets of the flaps, as clearly appears in Fig. e, the laces being crossed to pass from one to the other. Now, when tension is applied on the laces, which tension is resisted by the pressure on the corset, the first action is to draw together the fiaps 13, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. 'This forms theshield. Then, as the laces are taken up, the body ofthe corset is drawn together in the usual manner. This action is effected both at the top and bottom of the shield,v and when lthe laces are iinally adjusted and tied the whole forms a complete adjustment not only ot the corset body but also of the shield flaps, and the laces hold the shield in proper and fixed posit-ion and prevent the same from becoming misplaced After the laces are once adjusted the corset may be applied or removed lwithout disturbing this adjustment, by unn hooking the same as usual.
An adjustable shield so constructed has many advantages over the loose one-piece shields ordinarily employed.
1. rIhe combination with corset sections having margins provided with eyelets, of a shield comprising a pair of fiaps both of which are connected to and project beyond the respective margins on the inside of the sections, whereby the edges of the flaps will abut with each other and close the space between the sections in all positions of the latter, and laces connecting the margins of the corset sections and also the margins'oi the fiaps.
2. The combination with a corset provided Y ing respectively beyond opposite margins oi In testimony whereof7 I aix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
