To all ywlw/mj t may concern.'
Be it known that l, donn L. Kncnnv, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Sioux. City, in the county of lloodbury and State of lovva, have invented a new and useful Rini Band, of which the following is a specification.
This invention eims to provide a novel rim band so constructed that it may be placed readily on a rim, the liner gripping the rim and holding its position on the rim, against shifting.
lt is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
l/lith the above and other objects in view, which will .appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and nrrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes' 1n the precise embodiment of the invent1on shown cen be rnade Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the accompanying drawings:-
IFigure l shows in longitudinal section, a rim Whereon u rim band constructed in accordance with the invention has been mounted; Figure 2 is a to plan of the rim with the band thereof; .Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Figure f2; Figure d is a detail enlarged from Figure l.
'llhe rim band forming the subject matter of this application includes a ilexible body l having en opening 2 -lor the reception ot the valve tube (not shown). The body l may be constructed in various ways, but ordinarily, comprises an inner layer 3 and an outer layer l, these layers being connected by cementing, vulcanization or otherwise, the body being of 'the usual cloth stock construction, and being, preferably, inelastic. The outer layer t is peeled off the inner layer 3, and is cut away transversely, as at 5, the ends of the outer layer t torining tongues 6, oil relatively short length,
the ends of the inner layer 3 projecting' toward each other beyond the tongues 6, to
form extensions 7. Resilient retractile strips 8, which may be made of ordinary elastic, so called, are located side by side and are superposed on the extensions 7 of the layer 3, the ends ot the strips 8 being disposed 4 beneath the tongues t3, stitchings 9 or other securing means, connecting the tongues 6, the ends of the strips 8, and the layer 3.
TlWhen the rim band is placed about a rim 10, between the clincher llanges ll thereof, the retractile strips 8 will cause the body l to grip the rim closely. The result is, that the liner does not shift its position on 'the rim, during the mounting of the tire on the rim. or Whilst the tire is in use, having been mounted on the riin. "When all oit the slack has been taken out of the body l, by the retractile strips 8, the ends of the ertensions 7 may be cut oil, so that they will abut neatly, as indicated at 12.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
l. A riin band comprising inelastic inner and outer layers, the outer layer being provided with tongues, and the inner layer being provided with extensions prolonged toward each other beyond the tongues, and an elastic strip connected at its ends to the tongues, the extensions constituting means for` protecting the strips from contact with a rim.
2. A rim band comprisin inelestic inner and outer layers, the outer layer being provided vvith tongues, and the innery leyer being providedwith extensions prolonged toward'each other beyond the tongues, and an elastic strip having its ends located between the tongues and the extensions and secured to the tongues, the extensions constituting means for protecting the strip from contact with a rim.
In testimony that ll claim the foregoing as my own, l have hereto axed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. i
