BUCKLE.
Application led December 16,1922. Serial No. 607,408.
To all who/m t may' concern Be it known that I, Nans T. NnLsoN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at improved buckle. s v
VFigure 2 is a front view of my improvedl Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of buckle more particularly adapted for adjustably connecting together the ends of bands or straps for wrist vwatches and the like, but which may be employed for any otherv purpose for which it is adapted; and the Vobject ofthis invention is vto provide a readily-removable bar for the buckle on which the buckle-tongue is `pivotally mounted, wherebythe bar may be removed to receive the loop formed at the end of the' strap, and to also .facilitate the 're moval of this strap portion when Vworn to' be replaced by afresh one.
W'ith these and other objects in View, the invention consists'of certain novel features `of construction, asswill be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. Y -f Y In the accompanyingl drawings,
F igurel is a perspective view showing the back of a watch and the strap or band as attached to the watch with its free ends adjustably connected together by means of my buckle showing a portion of astrap in dottedllines as applied to the cross-bar thereof.
Figure l3 is anenlarged sectional elevation of my improved cross-bar.
Figure/i isan end section of my improved Vbar on line 4 4: of Figure 3 showing the tongue as mounted thereon.v
Figure 5l is a perspective view of the cen-` ter spindle of my'bar removed. Y
Figure 6 is a perspective view of Voneof the end bushings of the bar removed;
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the outer shell of the bar.
Figure 8v is aside elevation of the gripping spindle retaining coil spring adapted to be mounted in the space in the bar formed to receive it. f Y Y Figure 9 isV a modification showing the ends of the shell turned in to fornivbearings for the center spindle to take the place of the bushings,
It is found inV practice f of f advantageito provide a buckle of the type described,'hav
.ing'a tongue to' enter' holes in thesti'ap or band for adjustably securing the ends of the bandV together, and itis also found' of advantage to provide a removableicross-bar in this buckle frame adapted to be Yreadily reniovedto bev passed through the loop or eye formed in one end of the strap lto re'- ceive it, whereby the loop may berformeol kin the strap at the vfactory ready to be attached to the buckle without being obliged to sew or otherwise fasten the folded back and to secure the strap end aftery having been applied to the buckle; and the follow,
ing is a detailed description yof one means by which the removabilityof the bar of the buckle frame maybeaccomplished vWith reference to the drawings, l0 and Vll designate portions of a strap or band the one herein shown being a wrist band worn more particularlyA by a man for attaching a timen lof the U-shaped buckle frame.v
Into each of the oppositeends of this shell, I force a shortrbushing 16, having'a central hole 17 and a centralspindleiS is mounted to extend through this shellfandv i through the openings in these bushingswith its ends projecting beyond those v of the. shell toreceive their bear-'ings in the eyes of the i frame ends 13.
y `In order to frictionally retain this spindle in adjusted position in the sleeveI have mounted a coil spring 19 in' the gspace between the inner ends of theybushing, the
same'having an internal diameterv of a size to grip the external surface of the;v spindle so thatwhen the spindle is forced through theV coil it is gripped and firmly yheld by all of y the multiplicity of its convolutions andas the ends of the spring abut against the opposite inner ends of the bushings the spindle.
is held against endways movement except when considerable force is brought to bear endways upon it.
In some instances I may, if desired, corru,.
misv
gate or roughen that portion of the surface of the spindle, engaged by the .,coil, as illustrated at 2O in Figure 5, whereby the coil Will more firmly grip the spindle and prevent relative @ndt/evs movement 0f the same When'positoned in its Shell.
I do not Wish to be restricted to the insorting of separate and independent bushing members into the ends of the shell as in some cases the stock at the Ven dsof the shell -inay be turned inwardly to take the place of the bushings and `form bearings for the center spindle.V v
The buckle tongue 2l yis provided With-an eye-22 ,tliroughivhich the ,cross-bar is freely passed, the tongue being adapted to enter Yany ,of Ythe holes 23 in the strap to adjust the Samoa-bout the `Wrist 4of the wearer.
v In applying the strap to ymy improved buckle, the member 1l of the stra-p is preferabl-y provided with a loop 2li when made at the factory, as kshown in Figure l, by
Vfolding the extremity thereof back upon itself and :cement-ing, riveting or sewing this folded portion to thek body of the strap, and an opening or sli-t 25 is formed to receive the :tongue 2l.
norder to attach the strap to my improved buckle, it is only necessary to force thespindle lSiout, remove the bar and insertwit With its tongue into the loop of the strap, the latter may then be placed in line withY the eyes'in the ends of the frame :and
the spindle forced through the shell, the spindle being'firmly retained in its operatingposition by the grip of the coil until it is desired to again remove it to replace the strap when Worn by a fresh one.V
'The foregoing descriptien is directed solely toivards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that reservethe privilege of resorting to allthe mechanical changes` to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims. Y ,Y
