WITNESSES I INVENTOR 12 A.O.Hcmcoc1g nfroimrs Patented July 24, 1923.
UNITED ABRAM O. HANCOCK, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
HEADREST.
Application filed February 16, 1922. Serial No. 537,055.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM O. HANCOCK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Headrests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a head rest.
The object of the invention is to provide a head rest which may be secured to the body of a person and serve to support the persons head whether in a seated or reclining position.
It is also an object of the invention that the head rest be adjustable to suit persons of'different stature.
' It is a further object of the invention that the device be foldable into a compact bundle so that the same may be easily transported from place to place.
7 It is also within the scope of the invention that the head rest be exceedingly simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other. objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the device showing the same when fully assembled. I
Figure 3 is a detailed sectional View taken substantially on the line of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detailed perspective view of the belt used with the head rest and illustrating the manner in which the supporting arms are connected to said belt.
Figure 5 is a view in side elevation showin another application of the invention.
igure 6 is a rear view of the head rest shown in Figure 5'.
Figure 7' is a detail perspective view of the supporting legs.
Figure 8 is a transverse sectional View taken on lines 88 of Figure 6.
Figure 9 is a rear view of a modified form of head rest.
Figure 10 is a transverse sectional view on line 10-1O of Figure 7 Referring to the drawings generally, A
indicates a pair of supporting arms and H a head rest. Each arm consists inthe tele: 'scopic tubular see enslO. 11 an 2., The
sections are preferably arrangedso that.
the movement of one section within theother is limited and also that said sections may be detached from one another when desired. j
Referring particularly to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive the head rest H consists in a plate 9 preferably of light sheet metal, and
is secured a strap 14 by the means of rivets or the like as shown. Each strap has a portion extending "from the head plate H, which portion is pivotally connected with the upper end of the'associated tubular member 10 by the meansof a bolt or the like as at 15. The strap 14:, in each instance, extends from the head-plate H a sufiicient distance to permit, the tubular members 10 to be folded inwardly toward each other. 7
For each tubular member 10 there is pro vided a pad 15 which is preferably of the shape shown and may be made of sheet iron or other metal. 'Each pad 15 is formed with a. pair of eyes 16 and adapted for receiving a tubular member 10. The pads 15" may be slid longitudinally of the tubular members 10. I
The lower end of each tubular member 12 is slightly enlarged as at 17 and-this enlarged portion is provided with an" elongated slot 18. A belt B is provided which is adapted to extend about the waist of a person and which is provided with a buckle 19 for adjustably securing its ends together. The belt is also provided with a strap 20 which has its ends secured to the belt by buttons as at 21. One end of the strap 20 may be provided with a number of button; holes, as shown in Figure 4, in order that the same I may be adjustaed when adjusting the belt B.
For the head plate H there is provided a cushion generally indicated by the reference character 0. This cushionv may consist in a suitable casing 22 in which there is inserted suitable stuffing as at 23, F igure 3. The casing may be adapted 'to slip about the head plate H and'entirely cover the same and then properly stitched or sewed to o d he sam against removal; It is of of the wearer.
a person seated upon a chair C. The belt B is secured about the persons waist and the arms A rest upon his shoulders, while thecushion C is disposed at a point at the back ofthepersons head and in position for supporting-the same. The pads 15 shouldbe placed upon the shoulders of the user so that-the pressure upon the-arms A will be imposed upon his shoulders. The; pads 15 may be adjusted to, suit the des res of the user-of the head rest.
The device as before stated 1s easy to fold intoa compact bundle for transport-v ing. Whenfolding the device the sections 11' and 12' may be withdrawn from each other and also from-the sections 10 and thenthe sections- 10 may be folded inwardly. The sections 11 and'12 may nowbe. arranged'longitudinally of the head'plate l0 and the'whole secured together 111 a small and-compact bundle. If desired thebelt B' may be utilized for securing the different parts together to form a compact bundle. It may be here mentioned that the arm are-preferably made of tubular sections-1n order to retain the desired likeness and supporting strength; I
It should also be pointed: out that when the device ispositioned upon a person, as shown in Figure 1, the head support or rest cannot move from its supporting position, the same being supported by both the arms A and the upper portions of the shoulders This is important for the reason that it prevents displacement of the head rest irrespective of the: position the person may assume.
' indicate similar parts, or elements. In this I instance the head plate 10 is provided with a' support or rest generally indicated by the reference character S. This support consists in, a shaft portion 24: from which then extends the two legs25 one adjacent each end thereof. The legs are preferably braced by the V-shaped'st-rut 26. Upon the head plate 10 is secured two supporting clips 28, each clip being received adjacent its end by a screw or nut as shown and the free end of'clips adapted to'permit the ends of shaft 24 to. be sprung therebeneath. and so turnably held. The, plate 10 in, this instance is formed with a bead 13, which is turned forwardly.- in contra-distinction to the bead 13,-on the; same plate shown in Figures 1 to a-inclusive. I
In Figure 5ythehead rest is shown-when which serves to support the mans head.
In this instancethe supporting member S isswung to a substantially vertical "position with relation to. the head rest H andi.-furthersupports. the same.
Referring to Figures 9. and 10 the head plate 10 in this instance has-secured upon the rear face. thereof a strap130', said strap. extending longitudinally of the plate. and being secured by the. means of rivets or; the like. Intermediate the ends of the strap there is formed an extension 31 which istin the form ofa short curved bar as; bestshown in Figure 10., The GXJEGHSIOHBI has its sides serrated as at 32, and the bar isfurther p-rovided with. a longitudinally extending slot as indietaed atw33, Figure. 10; i
In thepresent form of-my invention each arm section 1-5 isv formed atits free end" with aneye 3a to. which? there. ispivotally cone nectedthe one end of an arm 35. The. arm 35, in each instance, is-curvedas. shown in Figure dzand its'free end portionv 36 bent at substantially rightv angles thereto. The free end portion 36, in, each instance, has its 1nner end serratedas shown in'Fi-gure 9.. The free endport-ions 36-of the arms, 35a are connected together by a, suitable bolt 37, said boltv being preferably provided with a wing nut 38. The bolt 37 also extends through the slot 33;.in the extension 31 and is adapted to adjustably holdqs-aidex-tension between the arms '35 in an obviouamanner. Thev purpose of making, the distanoe.,-be,- tween the head rest H and arms A adjusts able as described fonFigu-res9aand-1O is to make the device adapted to be. suited-.toapere sons whose necks are. of-difi'erent length.
The head, plate. 10 shown in Figure 9 is also provided with a, pair of" spring. clips 27' whereby the supporting member S shown in Figure 7 may beturnably supported.
While Ifhave shown and described the different forms of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I am aware of: the. fact that the construction, combination and ar-.
rangement of parts maybe changed by, those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention ascindicated. by the appended-claims. I
I claim v 1 1. A head restof the character described, comprising a pairof arms, eachconsisting in a pl ral ty of. t eso pie u lar ections, means reby saidarm y:-b .-.-'Sc 1-red to th ody of a person a t ewais line thereof, s i ar s-bei gadaptedto. e tend upward y I so and beyond the shoulders of a person, a head rest supported between the upper ends of said arms and adapted to be positioned at the rear of the users head to serve as a support therefor, and a pad slidable upon each arm adapted to be adjusted to be brought to a point upon the arm where the greatest pressure is exerted for supporting the-head rest upon the shoulders of the user.
