Be it known that l, FRANK J. Doreen, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Wvinona, in the county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is the provision of an exceedingly strong and durable wrench of the quick adjustable type, and one that is possessed of a wide range of utility.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and deiinitely claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a side elevation of the quick adjustable wrench constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a. top plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section of the wrench with one aw and its shank in eleve tion.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1, but showing the aw as having smooth faces to engage square and hexagonal nuts.
Figure 6 is a detail elevation showing the forward portion of a modification.
Similar numerals designate corresponding parts in Figures 1 to 4 to which reference will first be made.
The aws 1 and 2 of my novel wrench are disposed at an angle of about degrees from a line extending through the longitudinal center of the wrench, and the faces or opposed sides of the said jaws are preferably toothed as indicated by 3. l would have it understood, however, that it is within the purview of my invention to make the faces or opposed sides of the aws smooth as illus trated in Figure 5, the jaws in Figure 5 being numbered 1a and 2a, respectively, and the said smooth faces being numbered 3a. Manifestly when the jaws are provided with smooth faces 3a, Figure 5, the wrench may be used to advantage in turning square and hexagonal nuts and other articles of angular cross section.
The jaw 1 of the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 4 is carried by a straight shank 4 on one edge of which is a series of beveled teeth 5. The jaw 2 is carried by a body 6 in which is a bore 7 for the rectilinear movement of the shank 4. lt would also be noted that the body G is provided adjacent to the toothed edgevof 'the shank 4 with an abut-v ment S. and with a projection 9, the said. projection 9 carrying a portion 10 reduced in thickness and provided with a transverse aperture 11.
ln addition to the elements named the novel wrench comprises a lever 12. rFhe forward end of the said lever 12 is bifurf. cated as indicated by 13 to straddle the bodv portion 10 and is pivotally Connected to the said body portion 10 through the medium of a pin 14. lt will also he noter that the forward end of the lever 12 is square as indicated by 15, and is provided with a round ed corner 16. F rom this'it follows that the lever 12 when swung to a position at right angles to the shank 4, will rest in said posi tion and bear solidly against the body paraA tion 9 so that the free Yend 17 of the lever may be used as a screw driver. lt will also be understood that the beveled or tapered nature of the said end 17 permits of a prying instrument being readily introduced between the saine and the edge of the shank 4 for the starting of the movement of the free portion of the lever 20 away from the shank and the body portion 8. Fit 18 the lever 12 is recessed -to snugly receive the body portion 8 so that when the lever is in the position shown in Figure 1 and the jaws 1 and 2 are in use on a pipe or the like, the portion 19 of the lever 12 will thrust against the forward side of the body portion S and thereby take a part of the strain off the toothed roller 20 and the teeth 5 of the shank 4. The teeth 21 of the roller 20 eX- tend entirely around the same and are beveled at their forward sides as indicated bv 22, this provision being made in order that when the body 6 is moved forwardly on the shank 4 the teeth 21 will ride over the beveled teeth 5. The rear sides of the said teeth 21 are square faces of the teeth 5 when the wrench is in use with an object gripped between the jaws 1 and 2. lt will further be apparent from Figures 1 and 4 that the teeth of the roller 20 are spiral so that turn ing of the roller 20 about its axis will be attended by forward or rearward movement of the body 6 on the shank 4, according to the direction of rotation of the roller. The roller 2O is appropriately mounted on a shaft 24, carried by the lever portion 19 and a forward lever portion v spaced from the portion 19.
In the practical use of my novel wrench it will be apparent that the wrench may be quickly and easily accommodated to and used to powerfully turn a pipe or other large article of circular form in cross section.
Aside from the smooth jaw faces 3, the construction shown in Figure 5 may be and preferably is similar to the construction shown in Figur-es l to 4.
ln the combined pipe wrench and nut wrench shown in Figure 6 the jaw lb on the shank l" is provided with an extension that is equipped with a Smooth face 3l arranged in parallelism with and opposed to the forward side of the body projection 9 and portion 10 so as te serve in conjunction with said pro 'jection 9 and portion lO in forming an efficient nut wrench. Manifestly the distance y between the jaw 30, on the one hand, and the body portions 9 and l0, on the other, may bevaried according to the size of the nuit or the like to be engaged. i
ln all of the embodiments of my impro-vement slow adjustment is effected by turning of the roller 20 about its axis while quick adjustment is atta-ined by swinging the lever l2 on its center ll, and then using the lever as a handle with which to move the body 6 reetilinearly on the shank el.
l have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrange ment of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiments of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiments. l do not desire, however, to bevunderstood as conlining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch inthe future practice of the in vention various changes and modications may be made such as fall within the scope of my inrention as defined in my appended claim.
Having described my invention, what claim and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is
fn ay wrench, the combination of a shank having a fixed jawprojecting laterally from the end thereof, a shiftable jaw member slidable on said shank, a, toothed rack in the edge of said shank opposite said fined jaw and foi-ined of beveled teeth having one straight side and one inclined side,an elongated lever pivoted at one end to said shifts able jaw member and extending along the edge of said shank opposite said liked jaw, the other end of said lever being tapered to permit ready engagement of the same so as to facilitate swinging of the lever away from the'shank, an adjusting worm rotatably mounted on saidvlev'er, the rear faces' of the teeth on said worm being substantially `parallel to a lineV drawn radially to the pivotal center of said worm, thefront faces of said teeth being beveled, and stop means between said shil'table jaw member and said lever for limiting the outward piv etal motion of said lever toy a position at right angles to the shank.
