CABB'UBETOE.
Application filed November 1, 1821. Serial Ho. 512,142.
To all whom it mayconcern:
Be it known that I, MARIUS JEAN Bar- 'rrsrn BARBAROU, citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carburetors, of which the following is a specification. The present invention has for its object a device facilitating the carburation during the periods of starting, that is during the periods wherein the engine rotates at an extremely slow speed. Furthermore, this device affords a suitable and very regular slow speed and facilitates the subsequent increase of speed of the engine.
In the accompanying drawing and by way of example:
Fig. 1 shows in elevation the end of a high power engine having 12 cylinders in V provided with the carburetting device according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a corresponding front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 shows on a larger scale and on a vertical axial section, the elementary carburetor, its throttling member and its pipe.
ig. 4 is a view in sectional elevation showing the throttling member in vertical section on the line A--A (Fig. 3).
A high power engine, for instance having 12 cylinders disposed in V-shape, is usually mounted with two carburetting apparatus upon each branch of the V, each of the same feeding one-half of the correspondin branch and comprising its own slow spee device.
In the present arrangement the two carburetting apparatus 1 and 2 comprise but a single slow speed device 3, which constitutes in short a complete elementary carburetting ap aratus.
his elementary carburetting apparatus has a-pipe of small diameter 4 disposed parallel to the main pipes 5 and 6 and opening into the said pipes near the valves, at 7, for instance (Figs. 1 and 2).
The throttle member of this elementary carburetting apparatus (Figs. 3 and 4) is so disposed as to permit an accurate re lation of the slow speed of the engine, the t rottles of the main devices being closed. To this efi'ect, the oscillating valve 8 may be turned independently of the actuating devices by loosening the nut 9 and operating the oscillating valve 8 by the screwdriver slit 10.
At the moment of the opening of the gas 'At the moment of starting, the main devices being completely closed, all the air feeding the cylinders passes through the small pipe 4. This will give rise to speeds of air flow which are suflicient to provide for suitably entraining the gasoline, thus forming a mixture of satisfactory composition feeding each of the cylinders.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A carburettin installation for high power engines witE a plurality of groups of cylinders, which comprises two main carburetors for each group of cylinders, two intake pipes connecting said main carburetors to the cylinders of said group, one slow speed carburetor for each of said groups, a slow speed pipe connecting said slow speed carburetor to both intake pipes in the same group, athrottle in the slow speed carburetor. a spring which tends to c ose said throttle and means for opening said throttle simultaneously with the throttles in the main carburetors.
2. A carburetting installation for high power engines with a plurality of groups of cylinders, which comprises two main carburetors for each group of cylinders, two intake pipes connecting said main carburetors to the cylinders of said group, one slow speed carburetor for each of said groups, a slow speed pipe connecting said slow speed carburetor to both intake pipes in the same group, a throttle in the slow speed carburetor, a spring which tends to close said throttle, operating means for fully opening said throttle while partially opening with the throttles in the main carburetors and means for varying the anugular position of the slow speed throttle with respect to said operating means.
3. A 'carburetting installation for high power engines with a plurality of groups of cylinders, which comprises two main carburetors for each group of cylinders, two intake pipes connecting said main carburetors to the cylinders of said Emu? slow speed carburetor for eac o roups, a slow speed pipe connecting said.
one sa1d ow speed carburetor to both intake pipes 5 in the same group of throttle in the slow speed carburetor, a spring which tends to close said throttle, an actuating lever secured to said throttle, means for varying the angular osition of said throttle with lever, and a cam acting upon said lever and being operatively connected to the means for operating thethrottles in the main carburetors, the profile of said cam being adapted to fully open said slow s eed throttle for a small angle of rotation o the 15 throttles in the main carburetors.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
IARIUS JEAN IAPTISTE BARIAROU.
