Be it known that I, STEPHENR. F'rNEIgL a citizen of the United Stat-es, residing at Albany, in the county of Dougherty and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sashv Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sash fasteners, and has for its primary object to provide means of a simplified and improved nature operable automatically when the windowsashes have been moved a predetermined distance to hold or maintain the sashes aga-,inst further movement in either direction.
lA further object of the invention is to provide sash fastening means of such construction as to be wholly automatic in their locking or fastening operations and which require no manual effort in securely fastening the sashes.
'A still further and particular object of the invention is to provide sash fastening means so arranged upon the sash a-s to be wholly out of sight from the exterior of the window thereby to a degree rendering the window burglar proof.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a lock for the sashes of Windows which shall present no outwardly projecting IBO portions to hinder opening of the window to its fullest extent or to damage or mar the window framing in such operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying dravving, in Which'zv Figure i is a sectional view through the meeting rails of the outer and inner sashes of a conventional form of window, and illustrating-as applied thereto a lockingr mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention,

Referring now more particularly to lthe drawing, the meeting l'rails of the window include the-bottom rail 6 of the outer sash and the top rail 7 of the inner sash; the abutting faces thereof being inclined as shown to make a substantially air and water tight joint when the two rails arebrought together in proper manner. The invention,
in the present instance, is carried out by ar-y .rangmg the cooperating locking members to be hereafter described upon the meeting rails of the sashesin'order that Vthe latter may be held securely together when in proper closed position.
The lower rail 6 of the outer sash is pro-`l vided upon its inner or beveled surface with a keeper indicated generally at 8, adapted to cooperate 'with means to be hereafter del'ly scribed ur on the rail 7 of the inner'sash to securely lock the said sashes against movement relative to each other. -This keeper is formed upon a plate indicated at 9, and the latter may be provided .with suitable open\ ings through which screws 10 may be passed to secure' the plate firmly upon the rail 6. of the beveledsurfaces of the sash rails. Furthermore, this channeled arrangement enables `the keeper plate to be applied to the sash rail in proper vertical position. The keeper includes a., beveled or inclined face 12, terminating at one end in an abrupt shoulder 13; this shoulder being disposed at the lower end of the keeper.
The rail 7 is provided with latch mechanism to engage with keeper 8l to maintain the sashesproperly lfastened in closed position. The mechanism for accomplishing this result includes 1a latch indicated generally at 14 pivotally carried by the rail 7 and with which is associated means for extending th'e latch to engage the keeper 8 as Well as means whereby the said latch may be manuallyretracted when it is desired to raise or unlock the- Window. The latch 14 includes a plate 15 having trunnions 16 at its lower end and projecting outwardly therefrom to engage and lock in bearings 17 vwithin a housing 18 carried by the bar or rail 7. The outer surface `of plate 15 carries a lug 19 providing at its upper end an abrupt shoulder 20 to engage and lock behind the corresponding shoulder 13 of keeper 17 are arranged wholly within the housing 18 and at the ends thereof, and the plate la is therefore Wholly confined by the housing. The lug 19 of the latch member projects throughan opening in the outeif surface ofthe housing.
The rear surface of plate 15 of the latch is provided with a hollow boss 26 having 2,0 oppositely disposed notches 27 therein to receive' pins 28 projecting laterally from the inner extremity ot' a latch controlling rod 29. ,This rod passes rearwardly through the base plate 23 of the 'latch housing and through an opening 30 formed in the rail '7, and is I.provided at its opposite or outer end with a -knob 31by means of which the Vrod may be convenientlyA manipulated. That portion of the rod 29 which is confined .Within the housing 18 is encircled by an expansion spring 32, one end of the said spring engaging within the boss 26, while the opposite end of this spring bears lagainst the base plate 23, of the housing. This last-mentioned end ofthe spring is confined Within an 'annulus 33 projecting inwardly from the base plate v23. The
"spring 32 thus exerts pressure upon the latch to normally maintain the latter in extended or locking position, yet 4this latch may be readily retracted by pulling upwardly u on they rod 29. he grooves or recesses 2 in the boss 26 incline in opposite directions, so that the pins 28 carried by the inner end of the rod may be readily engaged therein and yet can not become readily detached from the housing. However, should it be desired to withdraw the pin from the lat chit is but necessary to rotate the pins slightly. in one direction to cause said pins to ride out of their respective slots.
The interior face of rail 7 is channeled yze or recessed and receives a liner'35 formed of suitable metal, the latter having flanges 36 projecting outwardly from its edges, and through which retaining screws or other securing elements 3'7 may' be passed to lfirmly hold the liner to the rail. 29 foroperating the, latch is of such length to its'l-ocking position, by action of spring 32. the knob or head 31 of the latch bar will be wholly confined within the liner 3,5-

able-and effective in practice. By equippingl the window with locking mechanism of'this character, the unsightly latchesheretofore proposed lare dispensedwith, and'all of the locking means areproperlyhidden from view.` By embedding' the 1 locking mechanisni in therails orvbars asthus proposed, the lock mechanism Will"be obscure from the view of burglars (ii-:others attempting to unauthorizedly open thelyviindcwjand furthermore, thissecure h oiisingoi2 the lock mechanism obviates the necessity of the lock mechanism heretofore used upon the upper rail of the inner sash, and which have proven extremely objectionable notonly in their siglitly appearance but because of their de facing the Window framing when the 'lower sash has been raised to its topmost limit.

Having thus fully described my invention, claim:
1. In a window latch, the combination cit upper and llower sashes` having meeting rails provided with Ainclined abutment surfaces., said surfaces having- 'cut away' portions forming recesses With straight vertical inner walls, a keeper meieber disposed within recess of one ot said rails and comprising a plate secured to the inner wall thereof having a latch lug provided with a beveled face and a shoulder, latch member dispcsed i within the recess of the other raii and eumprising a base plate secured te the inner waii thereof, said base plate having a musing projecting therefrom beyend the line ci said recess and adapted to cxtendinte the recess et Zilli the first-named rail when said rails are `in i an inclined face the v 2.
