To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, NELSON C. BUENA?, of Tipton, Cedar county, Iowa, have invented certain Improvements in Boot and Shoe Cleaners, of which the following is a specication:

The object of this invention is to finnish a simple and very eiiective boot and shoe cleaner. To this end the invention consists of a cross- `bar or scraper arranged in vertical slots of a metallic frame, said cross-bar havin g attached to its under side a metallic spring-strip, which is bent upwardly anduinwa-rd ly, its upper ends passing through the said vertical slots above the cross-bar or scraper, and carrying brushes or scrapers, located opposite to each other, and all so constructed that, when the boot or shoe is placed `between the brushes and pressed on the cross-bar scraper, the 'same will be forced downwardly, thus forcing the brushes inwardly against the boot or l"shoe with a yielding pressure, which can be regulated by the force ap plied to the cross-bar scraper.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention, partly in section, showing the vertical slots; Fig. 2, a detached top view thereof.

The frame A is composed of vertical arms B B, which are bent inwardly at their lower ends, and connected together by bolts and nuts. The upper ends of the vertical arms are provided with elongated slots e, in which the ends of a cross-bar or scraper, D, are arranged, so as to slide thereon. 'Io the lower .sidey of vthe cross-bar D is secured a metallic bar or strip, E, of such shape that it rests at the point e upon the lower edge of the slots c, the ends of said strip being bent upwardly and inwardly, so as to pass through the slots e in vertical arms above the scraper D, and upon the ends of said strip are secured the Scrapers or brushes `that they can be easily, and with facility, re-

moved for repair, or for replacing them with new ones.

With a foot-scraper constructed as above described, when the shoe is placed between the brushes and bears upon the crossbar D,

the latter will be pressed downward, which has the ei'ect of forcing outward the metallic strip E, and, owing to its bea-ring upon the lower edges of the slots e, as at o', will force the brushes inwardly upon the shoe or boot with a yielding pressure, the force of which may be regulated by the pressure onthe crossbar, and by this means the feet will be effectually and thoroughly cleaned of all dirt, by simply drawing them through the device.

The frame carrying the Scrapers, as above described, is designed to be attached to a suitable base for supporting it in position.

I claim as my invention- A sliding cross-bar or scraper, D, arranged in the vertical slots e of the vertical arms B B, and carrying the metallic spring-strip E, bent upwardly andinwardly, and provided with Scrapers or brushes C C, whereby, whenpressure is applied to the cross-bar D, the brushes will be forced inward upon the boot or shoe, in the manner and for the purpose herein described. y In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
