JOHN G. SPATHELF, OF SANDUSKY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,211, dated January 6, 1874 application filed September 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN G. SPATHELF, of Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Fastener, of which the following is a specification In the-accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view of a window, partly in section, to show arrangement of my improved sash-fastener. Fig. 2 is a side view of my sash-fastening detached, to show interior construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish for general use an improved sashfastening, which is simple, neat, and durable in construction, and very effective in its working. My invention consists of a casing with bolt and lever arrangement, which catches into recesses of the window-frame, and is withdrawn by pressure of the finger upon it, returning into the original position by a suitable spring.
In the drawing, A represents the window; B, the outer window-frame. To the sash of the windowA is applied the fastener O, which consists of the casing D, of suitable material and oblong form, embellished to produce an ornamental appearance. Casing D is con nected to the sash by screws a. When placed on the sash, the lever-rod E projects, with its knob or button d, through an aperture, 1), at the end of easing D. Lever-rod E is provided with a notch, 6, near button at, so that it looks over casing D by the pressure of leg f of coiled spring F, which is placed on lug g of easing D. The unlocking of the fastener by acc dental jerking or otherwise is thereby avoided. The end of lever-rod E is pivoted to the inside end of double bell-crank lever G, which has its fulcrum at pin or lug h of easing D. Its
middle part is acted upon by leg f of spring F, which is guided in groove f so that the other outwardly-extending end of lever G is forced through recess 1' of the side of easing D. It engages thereby with suitable rectangular or triangular recesses, which are set at suitable distance into the window-frame B.-
The projecting end of lever G is also notched at e, the inclination produced thereby increasing the efficiency of the fastener, and the easier withdrawal of the lever Gr on pressing button d. A side projection, Z, at projecting end of lever G, also serves to more securely lock lever G. The pressure on button 01 will force the end of lever G into casing D, drawing it out of the recess of frame 13, so that the window maybe raised or lowered, as desired. On releasing button d, the action of spring F will force lever G into the next recess, fastening 7 thereby the window at that point.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The sash-fastener consisting of casing D, lever-rod E, double bell-crank lever G, and spring F, substantially as and for the purpose described.
