Application filed October 13, 1922. Serial No. 584,340.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Piirniivnnn M. EonmN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Toronto, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have vinvented new and useful Improvements in Ladder .-i.ttaclnne11ts of which the following is a specification.
An object of this invention is to produce a foot support for ladders whereby to relieve the strain from the foot of the painter or other mechanic who is forced to stand on the round of a ladder for any considerable length of time.
To the attainment of the foregoing, and other objects which will present themselves the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawing which accompanies and which forms part of this application.
in the drawing 2-- Figure l is a view illustrating the application of the improvement.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the improvement.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation ofthe provement.
Figure 4: is a sectional view on the 4-41: of Figure 2.
A ladder of the ordinary construction is indicated, in the drawing, by the numeral 1. My support includes a rest proper and a hanger therefor. he rest is preferably formed of two spaced boards 2 and 8 respectively, the said boards being held in spaced relation by connecting means in the nature of brackets 4. Each of the brackets has its ends adapted to fit the ends of the boards with which they are connected. The connecting means are preferably in the nature of staples, and such means also secure the brackets to the under faces of the boards. The portion of the brackets between the boards are rounded so that the same can be received in one of the rounds 5 of the ladder 1.
The hanger is preferably formed from a single strand of wire bent upon itself to provide side members or arms 6. The lower ends of the arms 6 are bent upon themselves and continued in parallelism with the arms proper, the ends of the last mentioned porline tions, indicated by the numeral 7, being rounded toward and preferably connected to the arms 6, as indicated by the numeral 8. Thus the arms have their outer or lower portions provided with yoke-like extensions, and the said yokes are disposed along the ends of the board 3, the said ends of the board being provided with threaded extensions 9 that pass through the slots 10 of the okes, and the said threaded members 9 are engaged by winged nuts 11. The upper ends of the arms are rounded upon themselves to provide hooks 12, the connecting elements between the hooks being indicated by the numeral 13.
in practice the support is arranged over one of the/rounds 5 of the ladder 1, the U-shaped brackets contacting directly with the said round. The hooked ends 12 of the support are then arranged over one of the upper rounds 5 of the ladder, and the winged nuts 11 are screwed home to force the same or washers 14: in contact with the elements 6 and 7 of the yokes, after the platform has been arranged in a proper horizontal position.
The improvement is of an extremely simple construction may be readily adjusted to be properly positioned upon ladders having their rounds differently spaced and will afford a firm and comfortable support for the feet of the mechanic using the ladder.
Having described the invention, I claim The combination with a ladder, of a foot support therefor, comprising a platform made up of spaced boards, U-shaped brackets connecting the boards and designed to rest on one of the rounds of the ladder, a hanger formed from a single strand of wire, said hanger having its arms at their lower ends bent upon themselves to provide yokes, elements secured to the platform passing through the yokes, adjustable binding elements engaging the last mentioned elements and contacting with the members of the yokes, said hanger having its arms at their upper ends bent to provide hooks to engage another round of the ladder, and a connecting element between the hooks.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
PHILANDER M. ECHLIN.
