Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,201, dated January 6, 1874; application ld November 8, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. PrcKLn, of Nevada, in the county of Vernon and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Pern1utationLock, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawings, Figurerll applications for which the more complex constrnctions of permutation-locks are less advantageous on account of their size and expense.
My invention consists ot' a rotating plate, having a projecting pin at one end, which engages the locking-bolt, so as to withdraw the saine in part by means of the inner pin of a 'rotating dial-plate acting upon a projecting band-spring, attached to the rotating plate. Tlfe withdrawal of the lock-bolt is completed by the action of a second pin of the dial-plate on the bolt, which is recessed and provided with inclined front and rear projections for the same. The pins of the diatplate may be changed to any combination of letters by being placed into any two holes of the concentric series of perforations provided therein.
In the drawing, A represents the back rotating plate, which is of disk or other shape, and turns freely on the central bolt a.. At diametrically-oliiposite points of plate'A are arranged the fixed pin b and the outward-projecting band-spring d. Pin b is placed at or near the outer periphery of plate A, so as to engage the slightly projecting top part of bolt B and raise the same from its seat. Two pins, g and g', are placed into dial-plate C, one,g, in the inner, and the other, g', in the outer series of perforations f, under any desired combination of the letters, which may be formed thereby. The pins g and g project from the rear side of dial plate C, the inner pin g serving to engage the band-spring d, when carried against the edge of the same,but passing easily over the spring from the opposite direction. When, therefore, thedial-plate is turned so as toengage, by inner pin g, spring d ofrotating plate A, and to carry the same along till the corresponding letter is placed diametrically opposite to bolt B against a suitable index or a recess, h, of top or incasing plate D, the pin b raises the bolt B as far as permitted by the inclined rear projection b. the dial-plate in opposite direction till the second letter is brought into recess h, diametrically opposite to outer pin g', bolt` B is thereby engaged at its front projection b and entirely raised from its seat, so that the door i may be thrown open. It is evident that the outer perforations of the dial-plate have to be arranged at such distance from the circumfen ence that the outer pin g withdraws, by means of the inclined front projection b', the bolt entirely from its contact with the socket or seat. .p By straigthening or recessing slightly the lowermost point of bolt projections b the pins catch more efiectivelyitherein and secure/more fully the exact movements of the bolt. The bolt is thrown down or outward into its groove by its own gravity as soon as the rotating dial-plate is turned, on closing the pivoted door to which the lock is applied into a vertical position.
