lMPROVEME-i'i" iN MUSCmLEAF TURERS.
Specification formirg part olLettcrs Patent No. d, dated January G, i874; application filed November 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
De it known that I, WILLIAM; Il. KING, of Petersburg, in the county of Pike and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Music-Leaf rllurner, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figures l and 2, respectively, represent front and rear elevations of my improved music-leaf turner, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section of the same on the line c c, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spending parts.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved musicleaf turner for sheet and book music, by which the leaves are readily turned as required during the playing of the instru.- nient, and rmly retained in position on the rack or stand, whether they are placed singly or in book form thereon. My invention consists of a frame which is attached by its basepiece to the rack of a musicsstand or piano. Upright eonnecting-bars are pivoted to the base piece and top piece, by means of which thel latter is adjusted parallel to the base piece and the supporting bottom bar of the rack. The top piece is slotted for the arms which are pivoted to a common center-pin, and applied by flat end wings to the sheets to be turned by a sliding-plate, which catches by staples and slots into the forked ends of the arms. rI^he sliding-plate is drawn from side to side by cords and pulleys connected to a knob on the base piece.
In the drawing,A represents the base piece, which is iirml y applied to the rack of a piano or other common music-stand by a clip, a., and screw-bolt, e', carrying sidewise on an extension of clip, c, the knob b, which turns freely thereon. The uprights or standards B are pivoted to the base piece A and top piece C, being, preferably, of the height of the average sheet-music. rlhe top pieceGinaybc adjusted by the pivoted standards to the height of any .music book by being brought down sidewise parallel to the base piece A. rTop piece C is provided with. parallel slots d, which extend lon gitudinally throu gli out its full len gth takin g up and guiding arms D therein. Arms D are made of fiat strips of metal or other suitable material, and pivoted centrally to top piece C to a common pin, c, on which they swing from one side to the other. Any required number of arms may be arranged in corresponding slots of the top piece, according to the greater or lesser number of sheets to beturned. The outer ends of arms D carry vertical downwardprojecting wings D, which are of different lengths, thoseof the lower arms being shorter, while those ofthe upper arms are correspondingly longer, so as to reach equally far down. The arms D also increase in length from the lower arm upward, so that wings D may be placed sidewise of each other, and be freely swung in either direction without interfering in their motion. .Each wing Dl has a bandspring, f, applied with one end to it, so that the leaf'may be slipped between spring and wing, and be firmly held thereby, during the turning of the leaf and after turning, when in position on the rack. rIhis is specially useful when the music is bound in form of books, as the leaves are thereby retained in position immediately after being turned over, by which the frequent and annoying retention of the le ves bythe player is avoided. Single sheets of music are slipped between a spring-clamp, g, which is hinged to an extension of pin, c, and arrested when swung to either side by the stop-pins g. rEhe armsD are swung from one side to the other by means of knob b, to the shank of which the cords 7L are fastened. Cords h pass in oppositedirections around the shank and over pulleys h! of base piece A and standards B to a staple, i, of sliding plate E, which is guided in a suitable recess of top piece C, back of its slotted front part. Plate E corresponds in size to the number of arms D, and has a similar number of recesses, l, which are arranged pa allel to and at the height of the corresponding slots d in such a manner that the rear ends of arms D may project through them in being swung from side'to side. Each recess Z is further pro vided with a central cross-staple, l', which projects slightly forward so as to engage the forked rear end of arm D, and carry by the motion of plate E the arm D from side to side. rlhe arms D are in this manner swung over by turning the knob in one direction, and.
back by turning` the linoh in oppositie direction, one arm following the other in regular order, taking only one sheet at the time and holding it instantly in place7 facilitating and aeeeleratin g the turning and retention of the sheets during the time of playing the musical il lstrumeut.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The illusie-leaf turner and holder7 consisting of base piece A, with knob b, pivoted standards Il, top piece C with arms D, and side plate E with cords and pulleys 7L 71.', arranged and operated substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. rlhe top piece C, provided with parallel longitudinal slots d for arms l),and recess lor sliding plate ll, as set forth.
monies 8. The arms l) pivoted to top piece (l, in combination with sliding plate l5, cords l1, pulleys 7l', and knob to be swung in 'regular order from one side to the other and back7 as speeied.
4. The arm l), having forked rear end and Vertical wings D, with spring j' at outer end7 for the purpose described.
5. The sliding plate E, having slots I, with staples I', a ranged to engage the forked ends of arms l) in regular succession, as described.
6. The spring-clamp y, hinged to center pin c ot' top piece7 in combination with stop-pins g and wings D for turning` single sheets ot' music7 as set torth.
