POLISHING MACHINE.
Application filed April 3, 1922. Serial No. 548,945.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK A. MARCELLO, a citizen of the United States, residin at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and tate of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Polishing Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to polishing machines and the object is to provide an electrically operated device particularly adapted to polish varnished surfaces such as on furniture, doors, window casings, cabinets, ofice furniture etc.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my device in operative position on a horizontal surface and part of its shell removed.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged top view of the polishing pad of my device.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged top view of one end of the reciprocating plate of my device.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional elevation on line 5 5 in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 6 is a metallic downwardly opening housing having a removable side cover 6x secured to the housing by means of screws 7. From the rear side of the housing an integral hollow handle 8 projects upwardly at an angle and is threaded at its upper end to receive a cap 9.
The housing 6--6x is provided with oppositely arranged inwardly projecting bosses 6a, bored to receive the opposite ends of the aXle 1()a of a small electric motor 10, and forming journals for said axle, the motor being also secured to the housing, at the front, by means of screws 11. Axle 10n is provided with a pinion 12 meshing with the rst gear of a tra-in of reduction gears 13, 14, 15 the last of which is mounted on a shaft 16 j ournaled under and projecting across the motor and having a crank disk 15x at, its opposite end. Gear 15 and crank disk 15X are provided with correspondingly centered crank pins 17 each normally engaging the vertical slotted portion 18 of two oppositely arranged parallel ears 19 which are integral parts of a reciprocating plate 20. Horizontally arranged spaced slots 21 in the opposite side walls of housing 6-6x are engaged by outwardly projecting pegs 22 secured in the adjacent ears 19.
'I hat part of my device which does the poli'shing comprises a cloth cover 23 adapted to be stretched over a rectangular pad 24, preferably made of aluminum, the upper edges of the cloth being turned in as at 23x and clamped between pad 24 and plate 2O by screws 25.
The hollow handle of my device comprises an oil reservoir, the hollow portion being extended forward and downward in a reduced core 8X the lower end of which is occupied by the vertical part of an L-shaped pipe 26 and the horizontal portion of the vlatter normally opening into a deep horizontal groove 27 in the pad. 27 is a slot in plate 24 registering with groove 27 of the pad. Curved irregular grooves 28 registering with groove 27 at 29 are adapted to circulate polishing oil to cloth 23 through a series of small holes 30 in the bottom of grooves 28, allowing the polishing oil to saturate or moisten the cloth. A valve 32 controls the flow of oil to pipe 26.
33 is an elec-tric cord connected with any source of electricity to carry current to the motor.
In the use of my device the valve 32 is first turned to shut off flow of oil, the handle 8 iilled with a suitable polishing oil and the screw cap 9 screwed tight on the end of the handle. Said cap 9 has a small valve 34 through the hole 35 of which air is let into the handle. When valve 34 is open, valve 32 is turned to permit oil to iow into pipe 26 and thence to grooves 28 and holes 30 and spread in cloth 23. Current is then turned on and the motor through the gears and cranks described reciprocates the plate 2O and pad 24 by the action of the crank pins 17 in the slots 18, the reciprocating action tending to spread the oil to all parts of the cloth 23. By holding the cloth covered pad against a varnished surface the reciprocating action makes a highly polished surface in a lshort time.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a hollow downwardly opening housing, an integral hollow handle, an electric motor secured within the housing, a polishing pad secured in sliding parallel relation and adjacent to the bottom of said housing, means interposed between the motor axle and said pad for reciprocating the latter and means for conveying oil from the hollow handle into und through the bottom of Said pad and means for controlling` the flow of oil from the handle.
2. The structure specified in claim 1, and a Cloth covering secured on said pad for the purpose described.
3. The structure specied in claim 2, said oil conveying means for the cloth of 'the pad comprising` a duct leading the oil from the hollow handle down upon the pad, said pad .having in its upper side a main groove reoeving the oil and a series of grooves eX- tending from the main groove and'havng perforations through theV pad down upon the cloth.
4. The structure specified in claim 1, said means for controlling the flow lol voil comprising; 'an air inlet Valve at the upper end of the hollow handle und a valve in 1the holloW duet leading;- the oil from the hollow7 handle.
