This invention relates to abrading devices and has for its object to provide a new and improved device of this description.
The invention hasas a further object to provide an abrading device which shall be small, easily lifted and controlled, and which can be used among other things, to smooth the surface of the floor in proximity to the baseboard without injury to the baseboard. The invention has as a further object to provide a relatively small abrading device with handles appropriately placed, for moving it, the device being provided with an abrading disc with a motor for operating it and a fan with a separate motor for operating it and a. removable casing which encloses the motors for the abrading disc and the fan.
The invention has further objects which are more particularly pointed out in the accompanying description.

Referring now to the drawings, in the particular construction shown the supporting structure for the parts is divided into two sections I and 2, which are removably connected together in any desired manner, as by means of the fastening devices 3. The section I contains the rotary abrading disc 4 which has its face covered with abrading material 5, which may be a sheet of sand paper or any other abrading material. There is a. pad of felt or other material 6 between the abrading sheet 5' and the disc proper 4. The abrading disc 4, the pad 6 and the abrading paper or cloth 5 are all centrally apertured. There is a central holding member I- which is a disc preferably having a flat bottom and an inclined top and which is preferably provided with a hub 8 which projects up through the central apertures in the abrading disc, pad and abrading sheet, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. This hub is hollow and internally screwthreaded and the driving shed a mthe abrading disc has its end screwthreaded, and threaded into this threaded opening in the hub I. V
The top of the abrading disc 4 is preferably flat and there isa disc III on top of it which has a central aperture through which the driving shaft 9 passes. This disc is fastened to the abrading disc 4 by the fastening devices I l which preferably have their ends extending into metal inserts I2 in the abrading disc 4. The driving shaft 9 is connected with the abrading disc 4 so 'as to rotate this disc when the driving shaft is rotated. There is an annulus 9a extending around the driving shaft 9 which is integral with the disc III. A key 91) connects the driving shaft 9 and the disc III, which in turn is connected with the abrading disc 4 so that the shaft rotates this disc.
The section I is provided with an engaging part I3 which preferably projects slightly beyond the periphery of the abrading disc so as that it enggages the baseboard, wash board, or any other vertical member, so that when the disc is used to smooth up the edges of the floor or other surface, this engaging Dart I2 will engage the baseboard, wash board or the like, and prevent the abrading disc from engaging it so as to injure or mar it. This engag ng part II is rigid with the section I of the supporting structure and is preferably integral therewith. Its lower edge may be a short distance above the abrading disc, as shown, for example in Fig. 3, or it may be provided with a thin edge I4 which projects down part way across the abrading disc 4, as shown in Fig. "I.
The driving shaft 9 extends upwardly through an opening in the top of the section I, which acts as a. bearing for it and is preferably provided with ball bearing I5 which rests on a shoulder I5a on the upper wall of section I. The driving shaft 9 has connected therewith a gear I6 which engages a. pinion II fastened to the motor shaft I8 so as to rotate therewith. The upper wall I9 of the section 2 of the supporting structure is provided with a recess I9a in which is located a bearing 29 for the upper end of the driving shaft 9, which bearing is preferably a ball bearing. This recess may be formed in any desired manher, as, for example, by providing the wall with the downwardly projecting annulus 2|. The upper wall is of the section 2 is also recessed at 22 to receive the bearing 22 for the motor shaft, which is preferably a ball bearing. This recess may be provided in any desired manner, as, for example, by means of the downwardly projecting annulus 24 on the upper wall I9. The two rehousing for ventilating shaft I to be brought veryclose together.
The motor shaft II is connected with a motor which is located in a motor housing II which is a open at the top and which has a member 21 extending across the top, which contains a ball bearing for the upper end of the motor shaft II. The housing II is removably connected with the section 2. Connected with the motor shaft II is a fan II which moves air through the motor and cooling purposes. Mounted upon the motor housing 2I is a lamp II which is connected in circuit by theconduciors II. The section 2 is provided with the separated upstanding members II and the motor housing is provided at the corners with the projections I2 which rest upon the upstanding members II. The motor housing is connected to the section 2 by the removable fastening devices II which extend through the projections I2 and into the upstanding members Ii.
Mounted within a chamber II is a fan II which is connected with the shaft II of a motor mounted in the motor housing 31, removably attached to the section 2 by the removable fastening devices II. The fan chamber II is provided with a discharge opening II which is connected to a collector II which may be of any suitable type now used. This fan chamber II is also provided with an inlet opening Ii which connects with the chamber I2 in the section I. This chamber I2 has an inlet opening II in proximity to the abrading disc, so that when the device is in operation the material removed by the abrading disc passes up through the inlet II into the chamber I2 and thence through the inlet Ii into the chamber II and thence into the collector Ill. The section I as herein shown is provided with a material receiving groove II which is formed with a downwardly projecting outer wall II and a downwardly projecting inner wall II. There is an admission opening I1 through which the material removed by the abrading disc is drawn into the groove II and thence up through the inlet II. There is preferably provided a flexible strip II which is attached to the section I and p which extends from the opening Il part-way along the wall II, see Fig. 4. This flexible strip projects downwardly beyond the lower edge of the wall II and its lower edge is preferably slit to form a series of separated members. The Pu p se of this device is to direct the material removed by the abrading disc toward the fan.
There is a removable cover II which fits over the motor housings 2i and I1 and which is fastened to the section 2. This cover may be fastened in position in any desired manner. As herein shown, there are recesses II and SI in the sides thereof. Fastening devices 52' and I3 fasten the cover to the section 2, the heads of the fastening devices being recessed in the recesses and II, see Figs. 2 and 6. The cover is provided with an opening II through which the lamp 2! shines. There is a switch 55 connected with the cover 49, with which the circuits for the electric motors in the housings 28 and I1 are connected. This switch is provided with a threaded member 56 which is received in an opening in the casing.v The actuating member II for the switch projects through the member II so as to be accessible from the outside of the cover. There is also a separate switch 58 for the fan motor in the motor housing 31. The
cover II is provided with two handles II, II by means of which the device is manipulated.
It will be noted that the section I is largest at the point where the abrading disc is located andjhat it narrows down back of the disc to a size approximating that of the inlet ll of the section 2.- Section 2 is preferably elliptical in shape and is considerably narrower at thefront than the'section I, the section i projecting beyond the section 2 at the sides and at the front, seel'ig. 1. Section 2 is provided at its sides intermediate its front and rear ends, with the laterally projecting parts Ii and I2. Connected with these laterally projecting parts are the caster wheels II and II which are mounted in the members II and II, which are rotatably connected with the threaded members I1 and II which pass through threadedwopenings in the laterally projecting parts Ii and I2. Lock nuts II and It, when tightened up, lock the parts I! and II in position. It will be noted that the members II and II with which the caster wheels are connected are free to move at all times with relation to the sections I and 2 and that these caster wheels may be adjusted up or down by loosening the lock nuts and rotating the members I1 and II in one direction or the other. The members I! and II are preferably provided with the removable pins 1i and 12 which prevent the members I1 and II from being entirely removed from the device. The caster wheels engage the floor or other surface upon which the abrading disc is acting and not only act as rolling supports, but may also be used'to tilt the device so as to adjust or vary the portion of the abrading disc which engages the surface along which the device is moved.
In the use of the device, the motors are set in operation and the operator grasps the handles II and II and moves the rotating abrading disc along the surface to be acted upon. The fan II then causes the material removed from the surface the disc is acting upon to be drawn into the inlet II, chamber 42 and fan chamber 34 and discharged into the collector to. The fixed part II on the section i engages the baseboard or any other similar part when the device is brought close to it, so as to prevent the disc from marring the baseboard. The parts are arranged, however, so that the discean get up to the baseboard so as to act upon the surface all the way up to the baseboard. When the device is being used the usual flexible connection from a wall socket is connected with the member 13 attached to the cover II.
Iclaim:
1. An abrading device comprising an abrading disc, a driving motor therefor, a fan, a driving motor therefor, a supporting device for said parts consisting of a lower section and an upper section, removably connected together, said abrading disc mounted in the lower section, a shaft for the abrading disc extending into the upper section, a motor housing for the abradlng disc motor, the abrading disc motor and its housing projecting upwardly from the top of the upper section, themotor housing being removably connected with said upper section, said motor having a shaft operatively connected with the shaft of the abrading disc, a fan chamber in the upper section in which said fan is mounted, a housing for the fan motor removably connected with the upper section, the fan motor and its housing projecting above theupper section, a connection ing disc mounted in the lower section, a shaft for the abrading disc extending into the upper section, a motor housing for the abrading disc motor, the abra'ding disc motor and its housing projecting upwardly from the top of the upper section. the motor housing being removably con. nected with said upper section, said motor hav ing a shaft operatively connected with the shaft of the abrading disc, a fan chamber in the upper section in which said fan is mounted, a housing for the fan motor removably connected with the vice for said parts'consisting through an opening upper section, the fan motor and its housing projecting above the upper section, a connection leading from the fan chamber to a point in proximity to the edge of the abrading disc, and a cover for covering the motor housings, said cover removably connected with the upper section.

An abrading device comprising an abrading disc, a driving motor therefor, a fan, a driving motor therefor, a supporting device for said parts consisting of a lower section and an upper section removably connected together, said abrading disc mounted in the lower section, a shaft a supporting deof a lower section and an upper section removably connected together, said abrading disc mounted in the lower section, a shaft for the abrading disc extending into the upper section, said upper section having an upper wall provided with a recess, a bearing for the abrading disc shaft mounted in said recess, said abrading disc motor being mounted on the upper section and having a shaft extending therein, the upper wall of the upper section being provided with a second recess, a bearing for said motor mounted in said second recess, a driving connection between said motor shaft and said abrading disc shaft, a fan chamber in said upper section opposite the part of the abrading disc motor which projects into said upper section, a fan in said fan chamber,

a, motor for driving the fan, and a connection leading from the section and to a fan chamber into the lower point in proximity to the edge of said abrading disc.

An abrading device comprising an abrading disc, a driving motor therefor, a fan, a driving for the abrading disc extending into the upper section, a motor housing for the abrading disc motor, the abrading disc motor and its housing projecting upwardly from the top of the upper section, nected with said upper section, said motor having a shaft operatively connected with the shaft of the abrading disc, a fan chamber in the upper section in which said fan is mounted, a housing for the fan motor removably connected with the upper section, the fan motor and its housing projecting above the upper section, a connection leading from the fan chamber to a point in proximity to the edge of the abrading disc, said upper section being provided with laterally projecting parts, and a wheel adiustably connected with each of said laterally projecting parts, said wheels engaging the surface along which the abrading disc is moved.

An abrading device comprising an abrading disc, a driving motor therefor, a fan, a driving motor therefor, a supporting device for said parts consisting of a lower section and an upper section removably connected together, said abrading disc mounted in the lower section, two downwardly projecting separated walls on said lower section beyond the edge of the abrading disc, forming agroove for the passage of material removed by the abrading disc, means for admitting this material into said groove, a shaft for the abrading disc extending into the upper section, a motor housing for the abrading disc motor, the abrading disc motor and its housing projecting upwardly from the top of the upper section, the motor housing being removably connected with said upper section, said motor having a shaft operatively connected with the shaft of the abrading disc, a fan chamber in the upper section in which said fan is mounted, a housing for the fan motor removably connected with the upper section, the fan motor and its housing projecting above the upper section, and a connection leading from said fan chamber and connected with said groove.
5. An abrading device comprising an abrading the motor housing being removably conmotor therefor, a supporting device for said parts consisting of a lower section and an upper section removably connected together, said abrading disc mounted in the lower section, a
shaft for the abrading disc extending into the upper section, a motor housing for the abrading disc motor, the abrading disc motor and its housing projecting upwardly from, the top of the upper section, the motor housing being removably connected with said upper section, said motor having a shaft operatively connected with the shaft of the abrading disc, a fan chamber in the upper section in which said fan is mounted, a housing for the fan motor removably connected with the upper section, the fan motor and its housing projecting above the upper section, a connection leading from the fan chamber to a point in proximity to the edge of the abrading disc, a cover for covering the motor housings, said cover removably connected with the upper section, an electric switch removably connected with said cover,to which the electric motors are electrically connected, and an actuating member connected with said switch and projecting to the exterior of the cover.
7. An abrading device comprising an abrading disc, a driving motor therefor, a fan, a driving motor therefor, a supporting device for said parts consisting of a lower section and an upper section removably connected together, said abrading disc mounted in the lower section, a
, shaft for the abrading disc extending into the upper section, a motor housing for the abrading disc motor, the abrading disc motor and its housing projecting upwardly from the top of the upper section, the motor housing being removably connected with said upper section, said motor having a shaft operatively connected with the shaft of the abrading disc, a fan chamber in the upper section in which said fan is mounted, a
housing for the fan motor removably connected with the upper section, the fan motor and its housing projecting above the upper section, a connection leading from the fan chamber to a point in proximity to the edge of the abrading disc, a cover for covering the motor housings, said cover removably connected with the upper section, and two separated handles connected together, said handles removably connected with the top of said cover.
