UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOHN J. MITCHELL, OF HOPKINSVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,088, dated December 30, 1873 ;`applieation filed A July 12, 1873.
To all lwhom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, J oEN J AMES MITCHELL, of Hopkinsville, in the county of Christian and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of my plow in side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detached views of the parts of which my plow is composed.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction land arrangement of a4 plow for use in sandy ground, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the foot-piece; B, the share 5 O, the bar or land-'side 5 and D, the mold-board.
The foot-pieceA is made of cast-iron, with the front edge curved, as shown. Along the front curved edge is formed the breast a, of the form shown in Figs. l and 3 and projecting toward the mold-board side ofthe plow, the two edges of the breast running parallel. At the lower end of the foot-piece is a iiange, b, to which the land-side or bar C is attached by bolts; and on the side ofthe foot-piece is a flange, d, to which the mold-board D is attached also by bolts. The share B may be made of steel or wrought-iron, and is welded to the land-side or bar C, and further connected with the same by a brace, f, making it very strong, and at the same time extremely simple. When the land-side and share are attached to the footpiece A it will be seen that the outer edge of the breast a and the top edge of the share B form nearly, if not quite, a right angle. The mold-board D is made of wood, and has its front part made at, or nearly at, a right angle from a' to g/ and y to z, to correspond with the edges of the breast and share. Along these two sides of the mold-board are iianges e e, forming shoulders, so that when the mold-board is placed in position said flanges will pass under the `breast and share, while the sides .r y and y z of the mold-board will come close up to the edges of the breast and share respect-- ively. The mold-board is then firmly bolted to the ilange d.
This construction of the breast and share, with corresponding form of the mold-board, brings the mold-board very far forward toward the front edge, which is of decided advantage, especially in sandy ground, for which this plow is more particularly intended.
This plow is cheap and simple, yet strong A and durable, and does its work in a thorough and superior manner.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The foot-piece A, having along the front curvededge the breast a and parallel flange d, and at the lower endthe iiange b, substantially as shown in Fig. 3, and for the purpose speciiied.
2l The combination of the cast-iron footpiece A, having breast a and iianges b d, the share B welded to the `bar O, and the wooden mold-board D having its front part formed at,
or nearly at, a right angle, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth."
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN JAMES MITCHELL Witnesses:
GHAs. SHAGKLEFOED, C. A. THOMPSON.
