UNi'rED STATES PATENT OFFICE.V
FRED IB. GUYETTE .AND FREDERICK GUNN, OF GUILD,` NEW' I-IAIEPSHIRE.
BOBBIN-AN'IISPLITTING DEVICE.
Application filed April 18, 1922. Serial No. 554,934.
T all whom it may concern. r
Be it known that we, FRED B. GUYETTf and FREDERICK M. GUNN, citizens of the United States, residingat Guild, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bobbin-Antisplitting Devices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the saine.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for bobbins and has for its primary object the provision of means which may be easily and quickly lapplied to the stem or shank'of a bobbin to prevent splitting of the `same when in operation on the spinning frame, consequently rendering a large saving` in time and money by increasing the life of a bobbin and which y is now extremely short. i y i Another object 'of this invention is the provision of a bobbin anti-splitting device of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost. i
Vith these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novelfeatures of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Fora complete understanding of our inn vention, reference is to be had to the following descriptionv and accompanying drawing, in which: y
Figure l is a side elevation, illustrating a bobbin with an anti-splitting device applied thereto constructed in accordance with our invention,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional View,
illustrating the same. i
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l indicates as an entiretyan ordinary bobbin adaptedfor use on a spinningma-v chine and by actualexperience has been found to easily split while inoperaton on the spinning machine and to overcome this objection we have provided an anti-splitting device 2. The bobbin l includes the usual stem or shank 3 having annular ribs 4C and a head 5 at its lower end. The stem 3 adjacent to its upper end is provided with an annular groove 6 in which is mounted a reinforcing or strengtheningband 7 lof the splittype and` preferably constructed from spring steel or `which they must be replaced bv new bobbins i and also causing a delay in theoperation of the spinning machine. j
l/Vhile we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it will beY understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:
l. A device` of the character specified in.` cludiiig a bobbin stem having the usual annular reinforcing ribs and an annular groove spaced from the ribs and of a width substantially equal to the width of one of said ribs, a split band of resilient material fitted in said groove and of a width and thickness to lill said groove and project beyond the plane of the surface of the stem, said band adapted 4to reinforce and strengthen the stem.
2. A device of the character specified including a bobbin stem having a groove adj acent one of its ends, said groove having angularly related walls, a split band of resilient metal having a portion to fit snugly within Isaid groove, said band having a portion pro- `jecting beyond the upper edge of said groove and rounded so as not `to present any sharp edges, said band adapted to `reinforce `an strengthen said bobbin stem.
