Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pliers and has for an object the provision of means whereby the gripping power of the pliers will be materially increased.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means for yieldingly holding the jaws of the pliers extended, the construction being such as to provide for a positive opening of the jaws and. the separation of the plier handles the means employed being connected to the jaws and arranged between the handles so as not to inconvenience the user of the tool.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illu trated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same.
"Figure 8 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Figure at is a transverse section.
Referring in detail to the drawings. wherein like characters of reference denote corresporiding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a pair of pivoted members whose pivotal point is indicated at 11. These members each include a handle 12 located at one side of the pivot-point and an extension 13 located at the opposite side of the said point.
Pivotally connected to the extensions 12) as shown at i l. are jaws 15, the latter beinp; arranged in parallelism and substantially maintaining their parallel relation during their opening and closing movement. .ljxtending rearwardly from the aws 15 are resilient arms 16 and these arms may Serial N0. 552,668.
form continuation of the jaws. that is, they may be formed integral therewith as shown in the drawings, or they may be separately made and secured thereto. The arms 16 extend through openings 1'? formed in the handles 12 and have their inner ends connected as shown at 18. To increase the resiliency oil the arms 16, the latter may be formed Off a number of tapered spring leaves as shown at 16".
The resilient nature of the arms 16 will act to normally and yieldingly hold the jaws 15 separated so as to permit them to auton'iatically open when pressure is relieved. on the handles 12. In order to permit the jaws 15 to rightly close the arms or extensions 16 are notched as shown at 19 to receive the pivot 11.
It desired the jaws 15 may be toothed or serrated as shown at 19 and may be pro vided with cutting edges 20, to form a wire cutter. The inner ends otthe resilient arms 16 are riveted or otherwise connected together as shown at 2-1.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and. minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved. to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A pair of pliers embodying pivotally coi'ineci'ed members including handles, jaws pivotally connected to each of said members and means extending rearwardly "from the jaws between the handles for yieldingly holding the latter in open position.
2. A pair of pliers embodying pivotally connected members including handles, jaws pivotally connected to each of said members and resilient arms extending rearwardly from the jaws through the pivotally connected members to yieldingly hold the jaws in open position.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature.
RAY BUKER.
