ELEVATOR FOR STICKER RODS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWEL AUsTIN JEN- NET, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ranger, in the county of Eastland and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Elevators for Sucker Rods, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to devices for use in handling tubes and sucker rods in deep wells and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which can be readily adjusted to a sucker rod to support the latter in a desired position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described that has means adapted to engage a sucker rod or the like to prevent rotation of the sucker rod.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described that has co-acting means for locking the device in an adjusted position with respect to a sucker rod or the like, whereby accidental displacement of the sucker rod is precluded.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described that is strong and durable and at the same time is of a minimum weight for being capable of performing the service for which designed.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustratedin the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the device and of a portion of a sucker rod engaged thereby,

In carrying out my invention, I provide a carrying frame 1, which in the form of the device illustrated. consists of a block provided with a bore 2 and with a counter bore 3 at the upper end thereof. The block 1 has integral trunnions 4 which are axially alined and extend at right angles to the axis of the bore 2. The axis of the bore 2 intersects the common axis of the trunnions 4:, whereby the block 1 will normally be balanced when suspended between the arms of a bail 5, said arms being formed with integral hub portions at their extremities provided with bores 6 mounted on the trunnions 4:.
The block 1 is formed with a transverse bore 7 leading from the outer wall thereof into the counter bore 3. A rotatable holding and retaining member is disposed in the counter bore 3 and in the form of the device illustrated embodies a circular disk 8 having formed therein a slot 9 extending from the outer wall beyond the center of the disk, as best seen in Figures 3 and 5. A retaining plate 10 is secured to the block 1 in countersunk relation to the upper surface thereof by screws 11 or like fastening means and prevents the displacement of the holding and retaining member without preventing the rotation of the latter. 'The disk 8 has an integral extension 12, which depends within the bore 2 and has arcuate inner and outer walls, thereby defining a slot 13 between the end walls of the extension, which slot is of greater extent than the distance between the corresponding points on opposite walls of the slot 9. It is to be observed at this point that the inner diameter of the extension 12 is greater than the distance be tween opposite points on the side walls of the slot 9, whereby portions of the disk 8, indicated at 14, 15 and 16 in the drawings, project into the bore of the'extension 12. It is to be observed also that the portions 14, 15 and 16 of the disks 8 project inwardly beyond the walls of a slot 17 in the cover plate 10 (see Fig. 3).
The transverse bore 7 is enlarged and threaded at 18 for engagement with a nipple portion 19of asleeve 20. The latter is formed with a bore 21 in which is slidably disposed a locking pin or plunger 22. The bore 21' is diametrically smaller at its outer end than the bore 7 and is enlarged intermediately to define an annular shoulder 23 which provides a seat for an expansion spring 24. The latter is disposed on the pin or plunger 22 and re-acts at its inner end against a collar 25, which is rigidly secured on the pin or plunger and is arranged for slidable movement along the bore and along the enlarged portion of the bore 21.
The disk 8 has formed therein radially eX-" tending bores 26 and 27, respectively. These bores are positioned at right angles toflone another and each is adapted toreceive the inner portion of the locking pin or-plunger 22. The latter will normally be moved into engagement with one of the bores 26 and 27 onaccount of-the' action of the spring24t. It will .be apparent that the rotatable holding and retaining member will bemainwill; be positioned to extend acrossthe slot :through the'qvalls 0t the'block 1 and in consequence a member moved into theslot 9 and extending beyond the ends of the block 1 will be confined within .jthe holding and retaining member. a I
In order that the positioningof the holding and retaining member may be effected readily with entire accuracy, I provide a guide pin 28; which ispreferably a screw .or' bolt threaded transversely through the block 1 and'projectinginto, a groove 29 in the outer Wall of the disk 8. T Portions of the walls of the groove 29 have integral portions ndicated ati30 and 31, respectively, which protrude into the grooveand serve as stop members for limiting the movement of the rotatable disk 8 with respect to the guide pin 28. Then the handle 32is rotated about its 1 axis, the handle 32 will be moved outwardly on account of the engagement oi the end wall of the tubular portion 35 with the cam surface 34, thereby occasioningthe withdrawal of the plunger 22 from'the transverse bore of the dislrS against the action of the spring 24. p 1 p From the foregoing description of the .various parts of the device, the operation thereof maybe readily understood. The device is designed particularly for use with sucker rods which are. lowered into deep wells. In'Fig. 1, Ishow a sucker rod, denoted by the numeral 36. This sucker rod has the usual non-circular portion 37 below an external enlargement 38 and above another sucker 'rod. The enlargement 88 o'fthe latter willrest upon the portions 14,15 and 16 of the diskf8 which; protrude inwardly beyond the inner Wall of the extension 12. lhe extension 12 will fit over the enlarged portion 39 of the sucker rod. A device of the character described comprising a carrying block provided-with a ,bore and having a slot extending from the outer wall of the block. to said bore; a rod-engaging member carri'ed by said block and having a slot arranged to register with the slotin the car- S rying member, whereby arod can enter the slot in. said rod-engaging member, said carrying member being rotatable with respect to the rod-engaging member, whereby the rod is prevented by said carrying block from displacement out of the slot in said rod-engaging member.
2. A device of the character described comprising a carrying block provided with a bore and having a slot extending from the outer wall of the block to said bore, a rod engaging member carried by said block and having a slot arranged to register with the slot in the carrying member, whereby a rod can enter the slot in said rod engaging memher, said carrying member being rotatable with respect to the rod engaging member, whereby the rod is prevented by said carrying block from displacement out of the slot in said rod engaging member, and means for locking the carrying block to said rod engaging member in the position to permit entrance of the rod, and in the position to prevent the displacement of the rod.

A device of the character described comprising a carrying block provided with a bore and with a counterbore at one end, said carrying block being formed with a slot extending transversely from the outer wall thereof to the bore and longitudinally for the entire length of the block, said slot having a width greater than the diameter of a rod to be engaged, and a rotatable holding and retaining member disposed in the counter bore and extending into the bore, said holding and retaining member having formed therein a slot fashioned adjacent to its inner end for engagement with a portion of the rod, said slot being positioned to be moved into and out of substantial registry with a portion of the slot through the walls of the carrying block when the latter is rotated about the axis of the holding and retaining member.

A device of the character described comprising a carrying block provided with a bore and with a counterbore at one end, said carrying block being formed with a slot extending transversely from the outer wall thereof to the bore and longitudinally for the entire length of the block, said slot having a width greater than the diameter of a rod to be engaged, a rotatable holding and retaining member disposed in the counterbore and extending into the bore, said holding and retaining member having formed therein a slot fashioned adjacent to its inner end for engagement with a portion of the rod, said slot being positioned to be moved into and out of substantial registry with a portion of the slot through the walls of the carrying block when the latter is rotated about the axis of the holding and retaining member, and means carried by the carrying block and engaging the holding and retaining member to hold these elements in adjusted relative positions.

A device of the character described comprising a carrying block provided with a bore and with a counterbore at one end, said carrying block being formed with a slot extending transversely from the outer wall thereof to the bore and longitudinally for the entire length of the block, .said slot having a width greater than the diameter of a rod to be engaged, a rotatable holding and retaining member disposed in the counter bore and extending into the bore, said holding and retaining member having formed therein a slot fashioned adjacent to its inner end for engagement with a portion of the rod, said slot being positioned to be moved into and out of substantial registry with a portion of the slot through the walls of the carrying block when the latter is rotated about the axis of the holding and retaining member, said holding and retaining member being provided with a plurality of spaced apart transverse bores, and a spring pressed locking plunger carried by said carrying block and normally urged into engagement with said transverse bores selectively to lock said carrying block and said holding and retaining member in adjusted relative positions.
6. A device of the character described comprising a carrying block provided With a bore and with a counterbore at one end, said carrying block being formed with a slot extending transversely from'the outer Wall thereof to the bore and longitudinally for the entire length of the block, said slot having a width greater than the diameter of a rod to be engaged, a rotatable holding and retaining member disposed in the counter bore and extending into the bore, said holding and retaining member having formed therein a slot fashioned adjacent to its inner end for engagement with a portion of the rod, said slot being positioned to be moved into and out of substantial registry with a portion of the slot through the walls of the carrying block when the latter is rotated about the axis of the holding and retaining member, said holding and retaining member being provided with a plurality of spaced apart transverse bores, a spring pressed looking plunger carried by said carrying block and normally urged into engagement with saidtransverse bores selectively to lock said carrying block and said holding and retaining member in adjusted positions, and means associated with said plunger and operable at will for causing said plunger to disengage said bores.
