ANDREW J -STEVENS, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LO COMOTlVE-FURNACES'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,819, dated December 23, 1873; application filed October 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. STEVENS, of Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locomotive-Boilers, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of the boiler taken on the line 00 w of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a view of the rear end of the boiler.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
A is the shell of the boiler. 13 is the firebox. 0 represents the top of the grate-bars. D is the fire-box door. E is a lining on the inside of this door opposite theopenings of the damper E, which latter is on the outside of the door. The lining is angular in form, and projects from the inside of the door, the lower portion of the lining being cut awayso that an opening, G, is formed. The upper portion H of the lining acts as a reflector to throw the air downward onto the surface of the fuel, so that it can readily mingle with the gases inclosed, and thereby produce a more perfect combustion of the fuel. In ordinary boiler-furnaces, a large percentage of the fuel passes off with the smoke in the form of carbonic oxide. By supplying the requisite quantity of oxygen to this carbonic oxide, it is rendered combustible, and produces a bright flame and intense heat. The proper quantity of oxygen is admitted through the door, regulated by the damper and thrown by the deflector H onto the fuel, and the desired result is produced. I is an ofl'set in the back or rear .portion of the boiler, made for the purpose of allowing the axle to be set farther forward under the engine, thereby allowing of a more equal distribution of Weight on the drivingwheels than is possible when the axle is placed at the extreme rear end of the boiler, as is body of water under the rear ends of the tubes,
which in a measure relieves the tubes of vthe great strain caused by expansion.
I do not confine myself to the precise form or proportions shown, as alterations in this respect may be made in many ways without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A boiler-door provided with a damper, F, on the outside, and an air-deflector, H, on the inside, as described, so that when the former is opened the latter deflects the whole current of air, and directs it into the fuel.
ANDREW JACKSON STEVENS.
