DUDLEY S. SEYMOUR, 01? OAK PARK. ILLINGIS, AfisIGNUE 'IO UNION SPECIAL MACHINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CQRPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
FEEDING MECHANISM FOR SEVJING MACHINES.
Application filed April 4,
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DUDLEY S. SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Mechanism for Sewing Machines, of which the follow ing is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in feeding mechanism for sewing machines, and more particularly to a feeding mechanism having a differential feeding movement for gathering or fulling in the material as it is being stitched.
An object of the invention is to provide a sewing machine having a projecting cylindrical work supporting arm with a differential feeding mechanism which is so dis posed as to feed the material in a direction at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the work supporting arm.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sewing machine of the above character, wherein the feeding mechanism is located wholly within the projecting work supporting arm and is operated from a main shaft which extends longitudinally of the arm.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a feeding mechanism of the above character, wherein the feed bars carrying respectively the main feed dog and the auxiliary feed dog are pivotally supported on the same lift rocker and so as to swing about a center during the feed movements of the feed dogs, which is substantially coincident with the longitudinal center of the cylindrical work supporting arm.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the drawings which show by way or illustration one embodiment of the invention Figure l is an end view of a portion of a sewing machine embodying my improvement;
Figure 2 is a view partly in top plan and partly in section of the projecting cylindrical work supporting arm;
Figure 3 is a view partly in vertical sec-- tion and partly in side elevation of a portion 191%). Serial No. 287,389.
of the work supporting arm and the feeding mechanism mounted therein;
Figure i is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a view partly in longitudinal section and partly in side elevation, showing the end of the main shaft, the eccentric thereon and the eccentric strap cooperating therewith.
My improved feeding mechanism is shown as applied to a sewing machine of the type disclosed in the patent granted to Lansing Onderdonk, October 8, 1895, No. 54:7,676, wherein a cylindrical work supporting arm is carried by and projects from a standard, and overhanging said work supporting arm is an arm in which the needle bar vibrates carrying the needle of the stitch forming mechanism. Located in the work supporting arm is a shaft which operates the looper co-operating with the needle and which operates the feeding mechanism. In the present form of the invention this feeding mechanism includes two feed dogs, one of which may be referred to as the main feed dog and the other as an auxiliary feed dog. These feed dogs are arranged in tandem and the feed dogs'are raised and lowered by a common lift rocker. The main feed dog is moved back and forth for its feeding movements from a connection with the main shaft and the auxiliary feed dog is moved back and forth for its feeding movements from a connection with the main feed bar and this connection includes devices which may be adjusted for varying the stroke of the auxiliary feed dog relative to the main feed dog, so that said auxiliary feed dog may be given a difierential movement relative to the main feed dog.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, I have shown the invention as applied to a sewing machine having a projecting cylindrical work supporting arm 1, in which is mounted a main shaft 2. This main shaft 2 is rotated by suitable mechanism, such as shown, for example, in the patent to @nderdonk, above referred to. Extending along side of the work supporting arm is a feed lift rock shaft 3, which is mounted in suit able bearings carried by the work supporting arm. In the forward end of this shaft is a projecting arm a and intermediate the ends of the shaft is a projecting arm 5. The arm 4 carries a pin 6 which is secured therein by a set-screw 7. The arm 55 carries a pin 8 and this pin is freely journaled in the arm 5. The arm 5 is fixed tothe shaft 3 by suitable set-screws 9 and the arm t is secured to this shaft by a suitable set-screw 1,0. The feed lift rock shaft 3 is oscillated by means of an arm 11, co-operating with an eccentric 12, shown in dotted lines in Figure 2. These parts are substantially of the same construction as shown in the patent to Onderdonk, referred to.
Mounted on the pins 6 and 8 is an auxiliary feed bar 13. The feed bar 13is journaled so as to turn freely on the pin 6 and is rigidly secured'to the pin 8 by means of a set-screw 14. This auxiliary feed bar carries an auxiliary feed dog 15. Also mounted on the pins 6 and 8 is a main feed bar 16. Said main feed bar is freely mounted on both the pins 6 and 8 and is provided with a main feed dog 17. The main feed bar is oscillated on the pins 6 and 8 by a connection with an eccentric on the end of the main shaft 2. Said main shaft is provided with a disk 18, in which is mounted a pin 19- which is carried by a block having a threaded connection with a screw 20. This screw is held from endwise movement relativeto the center of the shaft and by turnin the screw the pin 19 can be moved radialy of the shaft'so as to increase or decrease the eccentricity of the pin. Mounted on this 13111 19 1s an eccentric 21, which is secured thereto by a cone-shaped nut 22. Co-operating with the eccentric 21 is an eccentric strap 23. This eccentric strap 23 is connected with a pin 24, mounted in a sleeve 25, carried by an arm 26 projecting from the main feed bar 16-. The pin 2 is secured in the sleeve 25 by screws 2727. As the main shaft rotates the eccentric will cause the feed bar to oscillate about the pins 6 and 8 as a center and this will cause the feed dog to move back and forth for its feed ing movements.
Projecting outwardly from the. auxiliary feed bar 13 is an arm 28. This arm is connected by a link 29 with a bell crank 30, which is journaled to turn freely on the looper supporting shaft 81. Said bell crank is formed with an upwardly projecting arm 32, having a segmental slot formed therein; Adjustably mounted in this segmental slot is a pin 34, with which a link 35 co-operates and the link 35 is in turn freely connected to the pin 24:. As the main feed bar rocks through the action of the eccentric 21, the pin 24 will. be moved back and forth and this through the link 35 will oscillate the rock lever 30 and the rock lever 30 will in turn through the link 29 and the arm 28 oscillate the auxiliary feed bar. The arm 28 is connected to the auxiliary feed bar by being secured to the pin 8 through a set-screw 36. The oscillation of the pin 8 causes the auxiliary feed'bar 13 to oscillate.
From Figure 1, it will be notedthat the pins 6 and 8 are substantially in line with the longitudinal center of'the cylindrical work supporting arm, and, therefore, the feed dogs during their feeding movements swinging about these pins 6 and 8 as a center will swing substantially about the center of the cylindrical work supporting arm. This causes the feed dogs to move in a path substantially parallel with the surface of the work supporting arm. The feed dogs are both raised and lowered by the same lift rocker, but are moved back and forth for their feeding movements by devices whichpermit of one feed dog being given. a greater movement than the other.
The material is held on the Work support by a presser foot 37, and the lower face of this presser foot is curved to conform with the cylindrical surface of the work support-' ing arm. The needle is indicated in Figure 1 of the drawings at 38 and the looper carrier at 39, the looper carrier being mounted on the looper supporting shaft 81;
From the above description, it will be noted that lthave provided a differential feeding mechanism within a cylindrical work supporting arm which is disposed so as to feed the material across the arm that is, in a plane which is at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the work supporting arm.
