The invention Yrelates yto new and useful improvements in feeding mechanisms for sewing machines, and more particularly to a feeding mechanism used in connection with a cylindrical work supporting arm for feeding the material lengthwise of the arm.
An object of the invention' is to provide a feeding mechanism ofthe above type, wherein the feed bar is so mounted that either end thereof may he raised 'or lowered during the assembling of the machinefor leveling the feed dog or for inclining the same slightly to a horizontal line.
A further object of the invention is to`provide a feeding mechanism of the above type which includes a main feed bar carrying the main feed dog, und an auxiliary feed bar carrying the auxiliary Vfeed dog, wherein both feed dogs during the assembling of the parts of the machine ina-y be leveled or inclined desired.

The invention is directed broadly to a feeding mechanism for a sewing machine having a cylindrical work supporting Farm along which the work is fed during the stitching thereof. In the present embodiment of the invention, the work is fed off from the work supporting arm, although the feeding mecha nism may be very readilychanged so as to feed up the arm insteadof off from the arm. Y In the present embodiment of the invention, the work supporting arm is carried at the upper end of a supporting post, and the feeding' mechanism is actuated by eccentrics located at the lower end'of said post through suitable devices extending upwardly'in the postand connected to the feed bar operating devices at the upper ends thereof. It will be obvious, of course, that thework supporting arm may be suspended from a depending post instead of being carried at the upper end of avertical post. In other words, the invention is directedy particularlyl to the packing of the feed bars and the actuating devices therefor, ina cylindrical work supporting arm. The main feed dog is carried by the main feed bar which extendsv vlengthwise of the work supporting arm and is supported on swinging members in the form of vertical links. The forward linl'is attached at its lower end to a lever which is capable of being oscillated for raising and lowering the feed bar. The fulcrum of this lever is aneccentric member which may be manually adjusted for raising and lowering the front end of thefeed bar. The link at the rear end of the feed bar is mounted on an eccentric bearing which can also be adjusted during the assembling of the partsfor raising and loweringV the rear end of the feed bar. This lever for raising and lowering the feed bar is connected to an eccentric strap which cooperates with an eccentric on a shaft extending into the supporting post for the work supporting arm. The feed bar is moved back and forth by a rock lever carried by the work supporting arm adjacent the rear end of the feed bar. This rock lever is connected to an eccentric strap which cooperates with an independent eccentric on said shaft at the lower end of the supporting post for the work supporting arm. The rock lever is connected by a link to the main feed bar so that when said rock lever is oscillated it will move the main feed bar back and forth. The rear end of the feed bar is slabbed so as to provide vertical faces parallel with each other, which extend in between suitable vertical bearing faces formed in a lug on the frame of the machine. rlhese vertical faces on the frame cooperate with the vertical faces on the feed bar in maintaining the up and down and back and forth movements of the feed bar in a vertical plane. In other words, they are for the pur pose of preventing-.the feed bar from tilting. but permit the feed bar to move freely up and down and back and forth. The auxiliary feed bar is mounted on the main feed bar so that it moves up and down therewith. It is, however, moved back and forth independently of the main feed bar by an arm connected by a link to the auxiliary bar and connected by a link to the swinging link support at the rear end of the feed bar. Said swinging link at the rear end of the feed bar is connected to said main feed bar at the upper end thereof. so that the back and forth movements of said feed bar oscillate said swinging link, and the swinging link in turn, through this link connection, oscillates the arm and this imparts back and forth movements to the auxiliary feed bar.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the improved feeding` mechanism includes a cylindrical work supporting arm 1 carried by al vertically extending post 2, which in turn is mounted on a cylindrical arin 3. Located in said cylindrical arm 3 is an actuating shaft 4. Said actuating shaft 4eXtends into said post 2 at the lower end thereof. EX-
` tending lengthwise of the work supporting arm 1 is a looper supporting shaft 5 on which is mounted a looper 6. At the rear end of this looper supporting shaft there is an armv carrying a ball stud 7 A lever 3 is connecterL at its upper end t0 said ball stud 7. This lever is fulcrumed on an arm 9 which is capable of sliding in a sleeve 1() carried by a shaft 11. The shaft 11 is mounted in a bushing 12 in the rear end of the work supporting arm 1. It will be `noted that this work supporting arm 1 is separated from the post 2 along` the l line zzz-, and is secured thereto by suitable screws 13. The lower end ofthe lever 8 is connected to a crank 14, which crank is rigidly connected to a plate 15 capable of radial adjustment on a disk 16 mounted on the end of the shaft 4. The purpose of this radial adjustment is to vary the stroke of the lever 8. As the shaft rotates, this crank 14 will rotate in a circular path lying in aI vertical plane. This causes the upper end of the lever to move to the right and to the left as viewed in Fig. 1, which impart-.s the endwise movements to the looper shaft and gives a needle avoiding movement to the looper. Said lever 8 is fulcrumed on the arm 9 just below its'connection to the ball 7, and this is what causes the upper end of the lever to move back and forth as stated. As the lever 8 moves up and down, due tothe rotations of the crank 14, it will oscillate the looper supporting shaft 5 and move the looper into and out of the needle thread loop.
Extending lengthwise of the work supporting arm is a main feed bar 17. Mounted on the left-hand end of this feed bar 17 is the main feed dog 18. The main feed bar 17 is connected to swinging links 19 adjacent the forward end thereof. These links 19 are connected at their upper ends to a pin 2O carried by the feed bar. The lower ends 21 of these links 19 are pivotally connected to a lever 22. The lever 22 is fulcrumed at 23 on a pin 24 which is provided with an eccentric center portion 25. This pin 24 is provided with a slot 26 for a screw driver, whereby it may be turned in its supporting bearing, and the pin is held in adjusted positions by a set screw 27. The lever 22 at its right-hand end as viewed in Fig. 1, is connected at 28 to the upper end of an eccentric strap 29 which cooperates with an eccentric on the actuating shaft 4. As the shaft 4 rotates, it will oscillate this lever 22' and the lever, through the links 19, will raise and lower the forward end of the feed bar. This movement is for the purpose of moving the feed dog into and out of engagement with the material being fed along the work supporting arm.
The inner end of the feed bar 17 is pivoted at 30 to a swinging yoke link 31, and this swinging yoke link 31 is carried by a pin 32 at the lower end thereof. This pin 32 is mounted in an eccentric sleeve 33 which in turn is mounted in a lug 34 formed as a part of the work supporting arm 1. A set screw 35 holds the sleeve 33 in adjusted positions.

Both the main and lthe-auxiliary feeddogs are, therefore, raisedl into engagement with the material, and lowered out of engagement with the material, through the aid of this eccentric strap 29. The main feed` bar is moved back and forth by the eccentric strap 44 operating through the rock lever 4l, and the link 38. The inner end of this link 38 is connected to a stud which can be adj ustedin a slot formed in the arm of the rock lever 4l, and thus the stroke imparted to the main feed bar varied. The main feed bar as it moves back and forth, oscillates the yoke link 3l through the pivot connection 30 therewith, and the yoke link imparts the back and forth movement-s to the auxiliary feed bar, so thatV both feed bars are reciprocated by means of the eccentric strap 44, and the devices which connect this eccentric strap 44 to the auxiliary feed bar are capable of adjustments so that the movement of a different length may be given the auxiliary feed bar from that given the main feed bar. lThe movement of the main feed bar can also be adjusted.
The main feed dog 18 is'secured to the main feed bar by means of a screw 72. The auxiliary feed dog is secured to the auxiliary feed bar by a screw 73. The auxiliary feed dog slides back and forth on the shank ofthe main feed dog. The auxiliary feed bar 5() is held in the recess or slot 5l by a plate 74 which is secured to the main feed bar by a screw 75. This plate is located in a recess formed in the side face of the auxiliary feed dog and overlies the bottom wallA of the recess. The recess is long enough so that the auxiliary bar is free to move endwise, but cannot move vertically relative to the main feed bar.
From the above it will be noted that a feeding mechanism for a'cylindrical work supporting arm has been provided, wherein the parts are so constructed and arranged that the feed dogs are positively moved back and forth and raised and lowered, and through the aid of comparatively few parts. Furthermore, the feeding mechanism has been provided, wherein the feed bars may be leveled or inclined during the assembling of the parts in order to insure the proper setting of the feed dogs. While the feeding mechanism is shown and described as feeding the material off the work supporting arm, it will be understood, of course, that it may be readily used for feeding the material on to the arm, if so desired. Of course,in order to bring this about, the devices-for moving the feed bars back and forth would have to be changed and timed to accomplish the movements of thel feed dogs in proper timing with the movements of the stitching mechanism. Thile the cylindrical work supporting arm has been shown as mounted on the upper end of a post with the shaft extending into the lower end thereof, it will alsobe readily understood that the work supporting arm may be suspended from a depending member, wherein the actuating shaft is above the feed bars. It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims. i

In a feeding mechanism for sewing machines, the combination of a feed bar, a feed dog mounted on said feed bar, means for imparting feeding movements to said feed bar, and pivotally mounted means adjacent each end of said feed bar for supporting the same, each of said supporting means including devices capable of being adjusted whereby the longitudinal axis of the path of travel of the feed dog may be adjusted bodily vertically or the angle thereof changed to various set positions without changing the character of the path of movement of the feed dog.

In a feeding mechanism for sewing machines, the combination of a feed bar, a feed dog mounted on said feed bar, means foroimparting feeding movements to said feed bar, pivotally mounted supporting devices at each end of said feed bar for supporting the same, each'device including an eccentric member capable of adjustment to various set positions whereby the longitudinal axis of the path of travel of the feed dog may be bodily vertically shifted or the angle thereof changed to various set positions without changing the character ofy the path of movement of the feed dog.
16. A feeding mechanism for sewing machines including in combinatioma feed bar, a feed dog mounted on said feed bar, devices for imparting rising and falling movements to said feed bar, devices for imparting back and forth movements to said feed bar, pivotally mounted means for supporting said feed bar adjacent the front and rear ends thereof, each of said pivotal mountings including an eccentric member adjustable to various set positions whereby the longitudinalaxis of the path of travel of the feed dog may be bodily adjusted vertically or the angle of said longitudinal axis changed without changing the character of the path of movement of the feed dog.

In a feeding mechanism for sewing machines, the combination of a feed bar, ay feed dog mounted on said feed bar, means for imparting feeding movements to said feed bar and means for supporting said feed bar adjacent the front and rear ends thereof, each of said sup orting means including devices capable of lieing adjusted whereby said feed bar may beadjusted vertically at either end for altering the position of the longitudinal axis of the path of travel of the feed bar without changing the character of the path of movement of the feed do 18. A feeding mechanism for sewing machines including in combination a feed bar, a feed dog mounted on said bar, means for imparting feeding movements to said feed bar, pivotally mounted supporting means for said feed bar located adjacent the front and rear ends thereof, each of said supporting means including devices capable of being adjusted whereby the feed bar may be adjusted verticallyat either end thereof, each of said devices including an eccentric member adjustable to various set positions without changing the character of the path of movement of the feed dog. a
