. FEEDING MECHANISM FOR SEWING MACHINES.
Application filed. April 8,1922.-
To all w ham it may concern Be it known that we, LANSING ONDER- DONK and AUGUST J. WOHLPART citizens of the United States, both residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of connection with a sewing machine having a work support in the form of a vertically extending post.
An object of the invention is to provide a feeding mechanism for the post machinewhich includes a main feed dog and an auxiliary feed dog, and wherein provision is made for giving said feed dogs a difi'erential movement. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide a differential feeding mechanism of the above type wherein the auxiliary feed dog derives all its movements from the main feed bar supportingand operating the main feed dog;
A further object of the invention is to provide a feeding mechanism of the above type, wherein the throw of the auxiliary feed; dog may be varied.
These and other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.

The machine in which the invention is embodied is of the work supporting post type, such as shownin-the- Onderdonk prior- Patent No; 1,129,591, patented February 23, The machine includes a supporting frame let the forward end of which is a work supporting post 2. This work supi porting post 2 carries a throat plate at the upper end thereof, and the material being stitched restsupon said throat plate. All
the parts within the work supporting post are operatedfrom an actuating shaft 3 mounted in the supporting frame. This shaft rotates and carries at itsforward end suitableeccentrics and-4t for operating the feeding mechanism. e
The main feeding mechanism consists of a main feed bar 5 which ispprovided' with a yoke 7 at the upper'end thereof, and mounted upon the yoke is a main feed dog'6. The
lower end of the feed bar 5 ispivotally mounted upon a lever 8, which lever 8 is in tu rnpi'v'otedat 9 and is oscillated by the eccentric 4?. As this lever: 8 is raised and lowered, itwill raise andv lower the feed as the shaft 3 rotates, the lower end of this lever will move in a circular path. The lever 10 is pivoted to a link 11 which in turn is pivoted to an arm 12 carried by a bracket member which may be adjusted for varying the position ofthe arm 12, and thus varying the length of feed stroke. The upper end of the lever 10 is connected by a link 13 to the feed bar.
. It'will readily be seen that, inasmuch as thele'ver 10 is pivoted intermediate its ends to the link 11 and the pivotal support for the link 11 is below the pivotal connection between said link and the lever, the upper end of" the lever will move in a curvedpath back a'nd forth, and this curved path is so disposed that the upper end of the lever has an up and down movement as well as a back and forth movement. Thus it is that the feed bar is oscillated back and forth on its pivotal connection with the lever 8.
The above parts are all similar in construction and operation to those shown in the prior patent referred to and will not need further description.
There is also provided an auxiliary feed dog 14. Said auxiliary feed dog 1 1 is carried by a yoke 15, which yoke is pivotally supported by the pivot pin 16, which pivot pin connects the link 13 to the main feed dog. The yoke 15 has a downwardly extending arm 17, said arm having a vertically extending groove or recess 18 adapted to receive the square bearing block 19 mounted on a pin 20, and this pin '20 is provided with a collar 21 and a thumb nut 22. The pin extends through a slot 23 in the post and can be adjusted up and down in said slot.
It will readily be seen that, as the main feed bar is moved back and forth and up and down, the yoke 15 carrying the auxiliary feed dog will be similarly moved back and forth and up and down, as said yoke is pivoted on the pivot pin 16 which partakes of all the movements of the feed bar 5. As the pivot pin 16 moves bodily to the left or the right, as viewed in Fig. 1, the arm 17, which is rigid with the yoke, will have no sidewise movement as it engages the pin 20 which is stationary. Therefore, when the pivot pin 16 moves back and forth to impart feeding movements to the main feed dog, the auxiliary feed dog will be moved back and forth thereby but to a greater distance.
'The reason that the auxiliary dog is moved a greater distance is due to the fact that the pivot pin 20 on which the auxiliary feed bar oscillates as a fulcrum is nearer to the pivot pin 16 than the pivotal connection bet-ween the lower end of the main feed bar and the lever 8. The pivot pin 20 is the fulcrum for the swinging of the auxiliary feed bar which consists of the yoke 15 and depending arm 17. By shifting the pin 20in the slot in the post, the extent of 7 additional movementimparted to the auxiliary feed dog may be varied. By the ar rangement described, the auxiliary feed dog will be moved to agreater extent than the main feed dog for all adjustments of the pin 20. The auxiliary feed dog is located in advance of the main feed dog and operates in the usual well-known manner to gather in the material in advance of the needles.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the meanslfor operating the main feed bar and the feed dog carried thereby is the same as described above and as shown in the prior patent. There is, however, shown a slightly modified form of means for imparting the additional movement to the auxiliary feed dog.
The auxiliary feed dog l t is carried by a yoke 15 and this yoke is provided with a depending arm 17 which, together with the yoke, forms the auxiliary feed bar. A rook lever 24 is pivotally mounted upon a stud 25 secured to the post of the-machine. Said rock lever 24- has a depending slotted arm 26 and a laterally extending forked arm 27. On the upper end of the lever 10 there is a square block 28 which slides in the forked arm 27. This square block 28 is mounted on a pivot pin which connects the lever 10 to the link 13. The depending arm 26 is slotted, and adjustably mounted in the slot is a pin 29. The arm 17 is provided with a groove or recess 30 into which the pin 29 extends.
As the lever 10 is oscillated by the rotating of the eccentric 4:, the upper end thereof, as above noted, moves in a curved path having horizontal and vertical components so that on each oscillation of the lever 10 the pin carrying the block 28 will have a vertical movement as well as a horizontal movement, and this will cause the rock lever 24: to oscillate on it pivotal support. The oscillation of the rock lever through the pin 29 will give an additional movement to the auxiliary feed bar and to the auxiliary feed dog carried thereby. If the pin 29 is adjusted to a point so that its extent ofmovement is the same as the extent of movement of the pin 16 on which the auxiliary feed dog is mounted, then the auxiliary feed dog will have the same extent of movement as the main feed dog. When the pin 29 is moved upwardly, however,the extent of movement imparted thereto will be less, and this will, of course, increase the extent of additional movement imparted to the auxiliary feed dog.
It will be noted from the above that there is provided a very simple means for imparting movements to the auxiliary feed dog, said movements all being derived from the movements of the main feed bar. There is also provided a means wherein the extentof movement imparted to the auxiliary feed bar may be readily varied to suit the conditions under which the machine is operating.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is V l. A sewing machine including in combination, a supporting frame, a work supporting post extending vertically therefrom, a main feed dog, a feed barv extending vertically of the work supporting post on which said main feed dog is mounted, means for raising and lowering said main feed bar and for oscillating the feed bar imparting to the feed dog its movements, an auxiliary feed dog, and devices actuated from the main feed bar for imparting movements to said auxiliary feed dog.
2. A sewing machine including in combination, a supporting frame, a work supporting post extending vertically therefrom, a main feed dog, a feed bar extending vertically of the work supporting post on which said main feed dog is mounted, means for raising and lowering said main feed bar and for oscillating the feed bar imparting to the feed dog its movements, an auxiliary feed dog, and devices actuated from the main feed bar for'imparting movements to said auxiliary feed dog, said devices being constructed so as to give to said auxiliary feed dog a movement of greater extent than that imparted to the main feed dog.

A sewing machine including in combination, a supporting frame, a work support ing post extending vertically therefrom, a main feed dog, a main feed bar extending lengthwise of said post and carrying said main feed dog,,means pivoted to the lower end of said main feed bar for raising and lowering the same, means connected to the feed bar intermediate its ends for oscillating the same for moving the feed bar back and forth, an auxiliary feed dog, devices movable with the main feed bar for supporting said auxiliary feed dog, and means for giving said devices a movement in addition to the movement imparted thereto by the main feed bar.

A sewing machine including in combination, a supporting frame, a work supporting post extending Vertically therefrom, a main feed dog, a feed bar extending lengthwise of the post and carrying said main feed dog, means pivoted to the lower end of the feed bar for raising and lowering the same, means connected to the feed bar intermediate its ends for oscillating the feed bar and giving back and forth movements to the main feed dog, an auxiliary feed dog, devices movable with the main feed bar for supporting said auxiliary feed dog, adjustable means connected to said devices whereby the movements imparted by the main feed bar to the auxiliary feed dog increase.
5. A sewing machine including in combination, a supporting frame, a'work supporting post extending vertically therefrom, a main feed bar extending lengthwise of the post, a main feed dog rigidly connected thereto, an auxiliary feed dog movably mounted on the main feed bar, means for raising and lowering the feed bar and the feed dogs carried thereby, means for oscillating the feed bar and the feed dogs carried thereby, and devices engaging the supporting means for the auxiliary feed dog operating to increase the movements imparted thereto by the main feed bar.

A sewing machine including in combination, a supporting frame, a work supporting post extending vertically therefrom, a main feed bar extending lengthwise of the post, a feed dog rigidly carried thereby, means for raising and lowering the main feed bar, means for oscillating the feed bar, a yoke having a depending arm pivotally supported on the main feed bar, an auxiliary feed dog carried thereby, and adjustable means engaging said depending arm for 0scillating the yoke on the main feed bar as the main feed dog oscillates.

A sewing machine including in combination, a supporting frame, a work supporting post extending vertically therefrom, a main feed bar extending lengthwise of the post, a feed dog rigidly carried thereby, means for raising and lowering the main feed bar, means for oscillating the feed bar, a yoke having a depending arm pivotally supported on the main feed bar, an auxiliary fee-d dog carried thereby, and adjustable means engaging said depending arm for oscillating the yoke on the main feed bar as the main feed dog oscillates, said devices being adjustable for varying the additional movement imparted to the auxiliary feed dog.

A sewing machine including in combination, a supporting frame, a work supporting post extending vertically therefrom, a main feed bar extending lengthwise of the post, a main feed dog rigidly carried thereby, means for raising and lowering the main feed bar, means for oscillating the feed bar, a yoke having a depending arm pivotally supported on the main feed bar, an auxiliary feed dog carried by the yoke, said post having a vertical slot therein, a pin adjustable in said slot and having engagement with the slot'or recess extending lengthwise of the depending arm whereby, as the yoke is oscillated by movements of the main feed bar, said pin engaging said depending arm will not impart an additional movement to the auxiliary feed dog.
