WATCH-CHAIN HOLDER.
Application led February 11, 1922. Serial No. 535,707.
support the chain at an intermediate point,
not only for the purpose ofl security but also for appearance. A common practice is to put the chain through the button hole of the vest, but this is unsightly and conceals the chain for a portion of its length.
An object of my invention is to provide a holding device which is adapted to engage a watch chain at an intermediate point and pass through a button hole in the vest or other garment, and which not only does not interfere with the regular button but cooperates therewith to hold the device in place. Other objects are neatness of appearance, simplicity and cheapness of construction, security in operation and convenience in fastening or unfastening. Still other objects and advantages of my invention will appear from the following description.
My invention contemplates a main holding or retaining member of proper shape to pass through a button hole of the vest or other garment and bear against the rear face of the garment above and below the button hole, the portion opposite and above the button hole being bifurcated to straddle the shank or threads of the button, and the retaining member being coupled to the chain by means of a stem or band adapted to project through the button hole and attached to the retaining member at a point intermediate the top and bottom of the latter. To prevent a rotative movement of the member about the button. shank so as to expose the bottom end beyond the edge of the vest, or render it` possible for one limb of the bifurcated part to slip through the button hole, the device may be provided with a prong or other member suificiently sharp to pierce the fabric ofthe garment.
Preferably this prong is on the bottom part, and if the device is stamped out of sheet metal or the like, both the stem and the prong may be integral with the body of the device, the prong being struck out from the material.
My invention also comprehends other` features of construction as will' hereinafter more fully appear. I shall now describe the illustrated embodiments of my invention and shall thereafter point out my invention in the claims.
Fig. l is a front view of one embodiment of my invention shown as it is dis osed during wear, the retaining member eing shown in dotted lines since it is concealed by the overlapping flap of the vest;
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same with thextwo flaps of the vest in section;
Figs. 3 and 4 are, respectively, side and front elevations of the device;
Figs. 5 and 6 are, respectively, front and side .elevations of a modlied embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 7 is a front elevation of still another embodiment; and
.Fig 8 is a sectional elevation of the same disposed in position for wear, with the flaps of the garment in section.
The device shown in Figs. l to 4, inclusive, is made of a single length of .wire or the like bent to the desired form. The body 1 of the device which serves as the holding or retaining member is generally of Y-shape, the wire being bent to make the two limbs of the Y double, and the two runs of the wire then being extended down and turned inwardly and reversed upon themselves to the bottom of the bifurcation, so that the stem of the Y is made of four runs of the wire. From the bottom of the bifurcation the wire is bent forward and down to form a hook-like neck or stem portion 2 terminating in an eye 3. The chain 4 is attached to the eye 3 either directly or through an intermediate ring 5, or the eye may be large enough to permit the chain to pass through it. For the purpose of rigidity the stem 2 may be soldered or otherwise joined to the bottom of .the bifurcation where the two bends cross, and the two ends of the wire may be soldered 4to make the length of wire. endless, or, if
desired, the stem 2 may terminate with the two ends which can be attached in any suitable way to the chain 4, as by solder, thus dis ensinfr with the eye 3.
n applaying the chain the retaining member 1 is inserted through the button hole 6 in the ap 7 of the vest before the button 8 on the flap 9 is buttoned. In this position the stem '2 hooks over the bottom edge of the button'hole and holds the device with the two limbs opposing and extending above the button hole. The button. 8 is then buttoned with its shank or threads between the two limbs of the retaining member, as shown in Fig. 1. lVhile the device is thus held by the button shank against sliding in the button hole and is concealed by the button where it extends across the button hole, it does not interfere with buttoning or unbuttoning operation of the button 8.
In the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the device, while generally resembling the form above described in shape, is stamped from suitable sheet material with the stem 2 integral with the body 1 and joined thereto at the bottom of the bifurcation. The stem is then bent outwardly and down similar to the stem in Figs. 1 to 4, and has its end bent back on itself to form the eye 3 for attachment to the chain.
The form shown in Figs. 7 and 8 is also stamped from sheet material, but the body 10 is round or disc shaped which facilitates its insertion through the button hole. The top is slotted similar to the other embodiments to form the bifurcation for straddling the button shank, and the stem 2 and eye 3 are formed as in the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6. In addition a prong l1 is struck out from the bottom part of the body 10, which when the device is applied is inserted inthe front flap of the vest, as shown in Fig. 8. The device is thus held against rot-ation, being anchored at two opposite points.
It is obvious that various modifications may be made in the constructions shown in the d rawings and above particularly deprinciple and scope of its top part bifurcated to straddle the button securmg means, and a stem outstanding from substantially the bottom of the bifurcation adapted to extend through the button hole and having chain-engaging means at its outer end.
2. A holder for Watch chains and the like comprising a retaining member adapted to bear against the rear face of a garment above and below a button hole and having its top part bifurcated to straddle the button securing means, a prong on said member adaptedl to pierce the garment, and a stem outstanding from substantially the bottom of the bifurcation adapted to extend through the button hole and having chainengaging means at its outer end. A
3. A holder for watch chains and the like comprising a retaining member of sheet material adapted to bear against the rear face of a garment above and below a button hole and having its top part bifurcated to straddle the button securing means, and an integral stem extending from the bottom of the bifurcation and adapted to project through the button hole and having chainengagmg means at its outer end.
4. A holder for watch chains and the like comprising a retaining member of sheet material adapted to bear against the rear face of a garment above and below a button hole and having its top part bifurcated to straddle the button securing means, a prong struck out from the lower part of said member and adapted to pierce the garment, and an integral stem extending from the bottom of the bifurcation and adapted to project through the button hole and having chain-engaging means at its outer end.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my signature.
