IMPROVEMENTl IN WRENCHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,710, dated December 16, 1873; application filed October 15, 1873.

Be it known that I, SYLvEsTER J. WRIGHT,

of Ellsworth, inA the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Wrench; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification.

The nature of this invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a wrench, designed especially for use on carriages, but adapted to be used in any place where a nut is to be turned, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art l to which this invention appertains to make and use the same, its construction and voperation will now be described.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side View of the wrench, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.

A represents an ordinary brace, such as are used with bits, except that the end of the shank, instead of being adapted to receive a bit, has a plate, B, iirmly fastened to it. The ends are bent outward or forward, nearly at right angles, and the two sides ofthe plate are flanged, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The plate B is at or near each bend slotted transversely from flange to flan ge, and through these slots pass the the jaws C C. The main portions of the jaws C G are straight, as shown in Fig. l, and their front or outer ends are curved inward from a to b. The rear or inner ends of the jaws C C form hooks d d, which catch in slots in they ends of a plate, D, placed and sliding upon the stem of the brace A. In the center of the plate D is formed a projecting-hub, f, through which the stem of the brace passes. This hub holds the plate steady on the stem, so as to always remain parallel with the plate B.

It will readily be seen that when the curved ends of the jaws C O are placed ou a nut and the brace forced forward, the jaws, with the plate D, slide back until the jaws grasp the nut firmly, when the brace may be turned in the usual manner and the nut unscrewed.

This wrench, though especially intended for use on carriages, may be employed in any place where it is desired to turna nut.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

The brace A, having` firmly attached thereto the anged and slotted plate B, and plate D, adapted to slide freely thereon, in combination with curved j aw C hinged to plate D, and sliding in the slotted plate B, substantially as herein described.
