CHARLEY JOHNSON, OF WILMOT, OHIO.
I GASOLINE TANK.
Application filed August 9, 1921. Serial No. 490,928.
My invention relates to fuel or gasoline tanks for internal combustion engines and has at its principal b ect the provision of a tank adapted to hold a quantity of water and gasoline so that a certain amountof the water will be taken up by the gasoline and.
thereby result in the saving of fuel as wellas to eliminate carbon deposits from the engine cylinders.
A further object of the invention is to provide a liquid fuel tank for internal combustion engines having a water compartment and a gasoline compartment divided by a perforated wall to permit the gasoline and water to contact whereby a certain amount of the former will be intermingled with the gasoline.
With the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construction and arrangement of parts and operations to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a gasoline tank constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the perforated partition or bottom embodied in the inven tion; and
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of a modified embodiment of the invention.
Referring in detail to the drawing wherein similar characters of reference designate similar parts throughoutthe several views, the numeral 5 designates the gasoline or liquid fuel tank in its entirety.
Supported in the tank 5 and extending horizontally thereof adjacent its bottom is a perforated false bottom or partitionG supported on an angle iro1i7. secured to the walls of the tank 5. As illustrated in Figure 1, a gravity feed pipe 8 extends through the bottom of the tank 5 and the false'bottom or partition 6.
In Figure 3 the tank is shown as provided with a vacuum feed pipe 9, the latter extending through the top wall of the tank 5 to a point in close proximity to the false bottom or partition 6. In order to prevent the liquid fuel from passing too rapidly into the pipe 9, a conical shaped boss 10 is formed upon the upper face of the false bottom or partition 6 and extends to a point in close proximity to the mouth of the feed pipe 9.
In operation, the water, being in contact with the gasoline, is caused to vaporize and combined with the gasoline and with the latter is drawn through the feed pipe to the engine. This, in addition to reducing the amount of fuel consumed, eliminates to a great extent carbon deposits in the engine cylinders.
It is to be understood that the forms of my inventionherein shown and described ,are
to be taken as preferred examples of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may beresorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
In a gasoline tank, a chamber divided into two compartments by a perforated wall, one of which being adapted to contain gasoline and the other water whereby the two liquids, by contact, will intermingle, and a liquid fuel'pipe passing through the tank and disposed in close proximity to the perforated wall whereby to conduct the intermingled liquids away from the tank.
' CHARLEY JOHNSON.
