FEEDING DEVICE FOB LIQUID FUEL.

Be it known that I, Rossem.' C. Hm', a citizen of the United States, residinwV at Eldorado, in the county of Butler and tat@ of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Feeding Devices for Liquid Fuel, of which the follo n is V:i specification, reference being had to t e accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain im roveinents in feeding devices for liquid fue I and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this neral character whereby the supply of fue to the carbureter of an internal -rombustion engine is eii'ectuully controlled.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character whereby the control of the feed is elfected throu h the Ainstrumentality of a vacuum tank` anc wherein said tank is provided with n, vent openi to facilitate the desired operation of the lli-levies,
The invention consists inthe details of construction und in the combination and arrangement of theseveral arts of my 4'iinroved feeding device for liquid fuel whereiy certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that m invention may be the better understood. will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated a View partly in section and partly in elevation of a feeding device constructed in ar- '-ordance with my invention.

The bore 5 of the casting C affords communlcation between the upper compartment :4i and the lower compartment B and coacting with the lower or dischar end of the bore 5 is a check valve 6, pre erably a flap valve. The valve 6 is arranged within the said valve assumes the creation of a vacuum or suction within the upper compartment A.
The body ortion of the tank T com a cylindric shell 7 and en ed wit the upper end portion of said s e is a ring 8 having its upper e e `defined by an inwardly directed annu ar flan e 9 artinlly overlying the top of the she 7. 41T)llhe to of the shell 7 is closed by the head H, pre erabl a casting of white metal, and the marginal portion of said head H is secured to the inwardly directed flange 9 of the ring 8 bythe screws 10 or the like.
The central -ortion of the head H. has disposed therethrough a port 11 having in communication therewith an L-joint 12 adapted to be inter osed in a connection with the intake maniihld of nu internal combastion en 'ne whereby a partial vacuum may be pro uced in the upper compartment Engaged within the inner orlower portion of the port 11 is fitted :i valve. seat 14 with which coacts a valve 15 preferably of brass.
The valve 15 is mounted upon the upper end portion of a vertically disposed guide rod or stem 16, the portion of said rod or stem 16 above the valve 15 extendin within the lower portion of the port 11. e opposite or lower endV portion of the rod or stem 16 extends within an upstanding sleeve 17 having its lower portion seated within the upper portion of the bore 5 of the casting C and forming e continuation of said bore.
The lower end portion of the rod or stem 16 is surrounded by and has secured thereto a flat disk 18 which contacts with the upper end of the sleeves 17 for limiting the downward movement ofthe stem or rod 16 and at which time the valve 15 is in open osition. 19 denotes a second disk surroun ing the stem or rod 16 and carried thereby at a point between the valve 15 and the disk 18.

The top or upper head H of the tank adjacent the marn'in thereof is provided with an inlet port 5,1 having in communication therewith an L-joint 22 held in applied position through the instrumentality of the reducing bushing 23 threaded fin the upper portion of the inlet port 21. The upper or outer end )ortion or 23 is define( -by an outstanding flange 24 and interposed between said flange 24 and the adjacent face of the head H 1s a gasket 25, preferably of copper` intersecting the port 21 and maintained therein by the bushing 23 is a strainer 26. The joint 22 is adapted to be interposed in connectionwith a suitable source of fuel supply.
The upper -or top head H of the tank T is alsoprovided with a second port or opening 27 nornuilly closed hy the plug P-and which port or opening 2,7 permits priminfr of the tank T in the event thc same should become dry. Extending axially of the plug P from the inner or inserted end thereof is a. bore or recess 2S terminating adjacent' the outer end of the plug P. In communication with the inner end of said bore or recess 28 is a restricted port 29 in communication with the atmosphere for n purpose which will be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
In communication with the lower compartment Bis an air inlet pipe or vent 30 and which pipe or Avent extends vertically through the compartment A adjacent a side thereof and extends exteriorly of the tank T through the top or upper head H.
The bottom or lower head Lof the tank T is Y preferably concave-convex and the lowermost portion thereof is provided with an opening 3l defined by a depend' sleeve 32 in which is engaged a union 33 a aptccl for coection with a ine lending to the .carburoter.
When the float F rests upon the disk 18, the weight of the float F moves the valve or stem 16 downwardly, brinving the valve l5 into an open position. This results in the formation within the compartment A of a. partial vacuum and the valve G closes. As the liquid fuel level Within the compartment A rises, us the fuel is delivered therein, the float F also rises and said float contacts with the disk or stop 19 and nieves the stem or rod 16 upwardly and the valve l5 into closed position. At this time, the valve 6 will o n under the influence of the weight of the fuel Within the compartment A and discharge within the lower compartment B The port 29 in the plug P is so restricted that the air admitted within the comparir the disks 18 and 19 herein-V the reducing bushingment A 'through suchport does not interfere ,with the re uisite .feeding of the fuel'4 but when the ve ve 15 is closed, this restricted port 29 permits admission offsuicientair to facilitate the. relevin of the .vacuum in the compartment A so t at the feeding oper-- ation s-Aelected with greater speed.
Thevsleeve 17 terminates a'desired above the partition A1 'andprovidesfan e'ec tive means to prevent water or. sediment from flowing into the lower compartment' f Bj. This provision 'is nota in cleaning out devices of this lfuneral char* acter, it snecessary to wipete water and sediment out with a cloth so that with the use of the sleeve 17,the bottom or 'lower head L may be madesimple in 'form or construction. i
