To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES D. JENKS and HUBERT M. PERRY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, in
the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antifriction Bearings; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,'and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements inv antifriction bearings and more particularly to such bearings'as are adapted for use as side bearings for railroadcars. The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularlypointed out in the appended claims.-

By this construction the load is transmitted from the body bolster in the anti-friction roller and from said roller through its shaft 23 to the shell 15. Manifestly if the load tends to be greater toward one end of the roller than the other, the shell will be caused to rock on its bearings 'on the. surface 17 of the base plate so as to assume, for example, the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 5. The position shown in Figure 5 is, of course, exaggerated more than usually occurs, and is simply shown in this way to illustrate the action of the device. Manifestly in the construction described the load will always be transmitted'evenly over the surface of the anti-friction roller.
The shell 15 is provided at its ends with round stub shafts 26 which are engaged in bearings formed by flanges 27 at the ends of the base plates which are bent about said stubs when the shell is placed in position on the base. I
The end walls 19-19 of the shell 15 and the intermediate dividing wall 19 are cut away at the bottom to provide ventilating openings 28 so that dust, cinders, water and the like may escape from the shellendwise thereof. In addition, the said walls l8-18 of said shell are provided with ventilating openings 2929 at either side of the intermediate dividing wall 19. By means of these openings free ventilation of the shell is secured.
a While in describing our invention we have referred to certain details of mechanical construction and, arrangement, it is to be understood that the invention is to be in no way limited except as pointed out in the appended claims.
We claim as our invention: .1. In'an anti-friction side bearing, a bearlng member, a roller carrier mounted on said.
bearlng member, the said roller carrier and the said bearing member having opposed, relatively divergent surfaces adapted to provide a free rocking movement of the roller carrier on the bearing member, and means connecting said roller carrier and said bearing member adapted to hold them in cooperative relation but permitting a free rocking movement of the carrier upon the bearing member.
. 2. In an anti-friction side bearing. a bearing member, a roller carrier mounted on said bearing member, the said roller carrier and the said bearing memberhaving opposed, relatively divergent surfaces adapted to provide a free rocking movement of the roller carrier on the bearing member, the horizontal area of the said bearing surfaces approximating the plan area of the roller carrier, and means connecting said roller carrier and said bearing member adapted. to hold them in co-operati've relation while at the same time permitting a free rocking movement of the roller carrier upon the bearing member.
3. The anti-friction side bearing ing a bearing member having a bearing surface inclined downwardly in each direction from a longitudinal median line, a roller carrier having a substantially fiat bearing surface engaged upon the bearing surface of the bearing member, said carrier member and bearing member being connected to permit a free rocking movement of the carrier member on the bearing member about the said median line of said bearing member, and an antifriction element journalled in said carrier member with its axis of rotation extending at right angles to the said median line. i
4:. An anti-friction side bearing comprising a base plate, an open top shell having sides, ends and a. bottom wall, said shell and base plate having opposed, relatively divergent surfaces providing a free rocking movement of the shell on the base plate, an antifriction element rotatively mounted in said shell and projecting through the open top thereof, and means connecting said shell and said base plate to retain them inoperative relation but permitting a free rocking movement of the shell upon the base plate.
5. An anti-friction side bearing comprising a base plate, having upright flanges thereon, said base plate having a top bearing surface intermediate said flanges, an open top shell having sides, ends and a bottom wall, said bottom wall having a bearing surface which rests on the top bearing surface of said plate, the two bearing surfaces viding rotative bearing for said roller, and
coacting'devices on said'base plate and shell adapted to retain the shell in operative engagement with the base plate but permitting a free rocking movement of the shell upon the base plate.
6. An anti-friction side bearing compristhereon, said base plate having a top bearing surface intermediate said flanges, an open top shell havlng sides, ends and a bottom wall, said bottom wall having a bearing sur- 7 face which rests o-nthe top bearing surface of said plate, the said two bearing surfaces being relatively divergent to provide a free rocking movement of the shell on the base plate, antifriction rollers projecting through the open top of the said shell, transverse mg a base plate having upright flanges L comprismesses shafts mounted in said shell and providing rotative bearing for said r0llers,.and co-ac-ting devices mounted on said base plate for holding the two in co-operative relation, at the same time permitting a free rocking movement of said shell on said base plate.
7. An anti-friction side bearing comprising a base plate having a top bearing surface inclined downwardly in each direction from a median line, a shell mounted on said base plate, said shell having a fiat bottom adapted for free rocking bearing engagement upon the bearing surface of said base plate, antifriction rollers mounted in said shell and arranged parallel to the direction of rocking movement of said shell on said base plate, and coacting means on said shell and base plate preventing lateral or longitudinal shifting movement of said shell on said base plate but permitting a free rocking 20 movement of the shell on the base plate.
