DUMP CAR.
Application filed November 26 1919. Serial No. 340,907.
T 0 all 107mm 52 may concern.
Be it known that I, GARTH G. GILPIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dump cars and particularly tothedoors or hinged bottom panels in cars of this type. It has for its principal object the provision of a door of this type made of cast metal, preferablycast steel or malleable iron.
(lump cars must be very strong and rigid so that they will not sag under load or become bent or warped under the stresses to which they are subjected. A cast metal door made in accordance with the principles of my invention possesses the foregoing characteristics and has the desirable advantage of be ing cheaper than doors made of rolled or wrought material, and without being of prohibitive weight.
A further object is the construction of a 2 cast door which will not warp in cooling afterthe casting thereof or during the annealing process. Any warping of the hinged bottom doors or panels is likely to interfere with the proper manipulation of the dumping mechanism of the car besides making the car leaky.
The invention consists in the novel and improved constructions and arrangements to be hereinafter described and claimed, for
carrying out the above stated objects and such other incidental objects as will be hereinafter described.
A. preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the drawing .wherein;
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a dump car provided with hinged bottom doors embodying my invention.
' Fig. 2 is a transverse section of my proved hinge.
Fig. 3 is a perspective thereof illustrating the construction of the lower side of the panel or door.
Like characters of reference designate like so parts in theseveral figures of the drawings.
My improved panel or door 10 is ap licable to dump cars of different design an construction, which constructions are well impanel taken at right angles to the 415 known and need not be described in detail.
Bottom doors for herein. For purpose of illustration I have shown in Fig. 1 a portion of a dump car of steel construction having side walls 11 and end wall 12 havin' top edge'fianges 13 and 14 respectively. he top chord of the body bolster 15 and the inwardly extending flanges 16 and 17 running along the sides and end of the car form a door framing for the bottom door or panel. The doors are hinged at 18 along the center line of'the car to the center sill. The hinge iscovered with a strip 19 extending from the flange 17 to the top chord of the body bolster and thus completes the framing for the bottom panel. This also prevents leakage of material from the car at the hinges.
In Figs. 2 and 3, I' have shown my cast metal panel or door which may beformed of cast steel or malleable iron depending on the conditions under which the door is used.
My invention, however, is not limited to the exact material used and out of which the panel reinforce the same under the load of the contents ofthe car and also prevent the warping of the panel out of a plane while the same is cooling after being cast or during the annealing process. As stated above it is ab'solutelyessential that the margins 29 of the panel lie in a plane so as to prevent leakage from the car and also so as not to interfere with the manipulation of the dumping mechanism. The marginal flanges and the transverse reinforcing ribs also as-- sist not only in strengthening the panel under load but in preventin the warping of the panel while cooling or uring annealing.
As many transverse reinforcing ribs 24 may be provided as is necessary to properly strengthen the panel. The, panel is preferably corru ated transversely. as shown, though the direction of the corrugations and their shape is immaterial. In case the tendency to warp is excessive, the corrugations may be cast in the panel running in both di rectlons.
Suitable mechanism of any well known type is rovided for operating the door and for hol ing the same closed against a load. However, such mechanism forms no part of this invention and accordingly is not illustrated or described.
' I claim:
1. A hinged door for a railway dump car, comprising a cast metal panel formed with out turned rigidifying flanges cast integrally therewith, hinge elements cast to said flanges and corrugations cast therein which terminates within the panel.
2. A hinged door for a railway dump car, comprising a cast metal panel formed with out turned rigidifyingflanges at its edges cast integral therewith, hingeelements cast to said flanges, angular reinforcing elements cast in the angle between said panel and said flanges for reinforcing the same at the hinges and corrugations cast in said panel for rigidifying the same against deflection when in use and against warping while cool- 3. In a railway dump car, the combination with the body of tne car, of a hinged door forming part of the bottom of the car and adapted to assume an inclined position for dumping, comprising acast metal panel having marginal flanges and corrugations cast integral therewith, and also a reinforcing rib transverse to said corrugations and cast integral with said panel and flanges, all for reinforcing said panel and for preventing the warping of same while cooling after being cast, hinge members cast integral with said flanges and reinforcing fillets cast in the angle between panel and flanges and opposite the hinges for reinforcing the same.
Leer-r978 4. In a railway dump car, the combinatlon with the body of the car, of a hinged door forming part of the bottom of the car and adapted to assume an inclined position for dumping, comprising a cast metal panel having marginal flanges and corrugations cast integral therewith, and also a reinforcing rib transverse to said corrugations and cast integral with said panel and flanges, all for reinforcing said panel and for preventing the wraping of same while cooling after being cast, hinge members cast integral with said flanges and reinforcing webs cast in the angle between said panel and said flanges for further rigidifying said door.
5. In a railway dump car, the combination with the body of the car, of a hinged door forming part of the bottom of the car and adaptedyto assume an inclined position for dumping, comprising a cast metal panel having means cast integral therewith for rigidifying the same and for preventing the warping thereof while cooling after bemg cast comprising corrugations in said panel, marginal flanges extending at an angle thereto, a reinforcing rib transverse to said corrugations and cast integral with said cor-
