filed June 22, 1922. This application filed October 10, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARTH Gr. GILPIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-Car Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to railway cars of the drop-bottom or dumping type, and, it has for its object to provide an improved sheet metal door having reinforcements which give the door the desired strength and rigidity, and which, furthermore, do not hinder the free discharge of the cargo when the door is so arranged on the car that the load passes over it in discharging. The doors of cars of the dumping type are subjected to severe shocks and pressures due to the impact of the cargo in loading and the weight of the material on the door, and other causes, and if the doors are made of sheet metal these shocks and pressures tend to bend, deflect and warp the doors so that in time they are likely not to close properly, with the result that the car becomes leaky and unserviceable. Any considerable warping may also interfere with the movements of the door.
By reinforcing sheet metal doors used in cars of the dumping type in accordance with my invention, the doors are rigidified and strengthened and their elasticity increased so that the life of the doors is prolonged and the diiiiculties due to bending and warping obviated.
The invention is illustrated in a certain preferred embodiment, in the accompany- Serial "No. 593,505.
vention applied to a car of the general service type.
It will be obvious, however, that this door structure is not limited in its use to cars of this particular, type. In the drawing, the side wall of a railway car is indicated by the reference character 10, the center sill structure by the reference character 11, and the cross members of the under frame by the reference characters 12.
The door consists of a sheet metal panel 13, provided with downwardly projecting flangesl l. These flanges are preferably formed integrally with the body of the sheet by pressing the margins of the sheet outwardly from the body portion so as to form a continuous rigidifying rib around the margins of the sheet. The door may be hinged to the body of the car in any suitable manner. In the drawing, I have shown it hinged to the center sill structure 11 by a pair of hinges 15, the strap portions of which extend for a considerable distance across the door panel. may be secured to the door in any suitable manner, as by rivets 16. In order to rigidify the door panel it is formed with a plurality of parallel corrugations extending diagonally across the same, from the hinged edge thereof. The corrugations 17 are pressed, preferably so as to project above the plane of the door to insure proper drainage and terminate within the edges of the panel at points within but near the edges of its top surface. By forming the door panel with diagonally disposed corrugations, of the character shown in the drawing, it is effectively reinforced without such reinforcements materially interfering with the discharge of bulk material, such as sand, gravel, coal or the like, when the doors are lowered to their discharging position.
This application is a division,-through my copending applications Serial Number 459,305, filed April 7, 1921, and Serial Number 570,245, filed June 22, 1922,-of my application. for Letters Patent Serial Number 320,7 92, filed August 30, 1919, now patented as No. 1,380,055, dated May 31, 1921.
I claim:
1. A sheet metal door for a railway car he hinge straps of the dumping type, provided with hinges having hinge members extending across the under side of the door so as to strengthen the same, and formed with a plurality of diagonally disposed corrugations which are all. substantially parallel with each other, and terminate adjacent the edges of the sheet to provide a flat margin around the edges of the sheet and within said margin a corrugated portion of sinuous configuration in cross section from one corner to another.
2. A sheet metal door for a railway car of the dumping type adapted to be hinged to the framing of the car and formed with a plurality of substantially parallel diagonally disposed corrugations extending from points adjacent the hinged edge and one lateral edge of the door to points adjacent the other lateral edge thereof and adjacent the edge opposite said hinged edge of the door.
