IDDTENT @FFHCCBO WALTER P. MURPHY, OF NEW YORK, N'. Y.
CAST-IVIEQL DOOR FOR RAILWAYCARS OF THE DUI/[PING TYPE.
`Application filed May 17, 1920. Serial No. 381,992.
To all 'whom it. may concern.'
Be it known that I, WALTER P. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residin at New York city, in the county of New ork and State of New York, have invented certain new Aand useful -Improvements in Cast- Metal Doors for Railway Cars of the Dumping Type, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to the construction of railway cars of the dumping or drop bottom type such as hopper cars, hopper gondola cars, drop bottom or general service gondola cars, or the like; and the principal object of the invention is to provide a door or drop bottom element for cars of this general class which will 'be very strong and rigid, without being eXcessivelyheavy, and which will have a smooth upper or inner surface so that there will be no chance for water to be trapped and so that as the load in dumping passes over it, -no obstruction will be presented to the.y sliding movement of the material.
y The invention is illustrated, in certain preferred embodiments', in the accompanying drawingsfwherein- Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan view of one end of a drop bottom" or general service gondola car furnished with doors constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, the scale being considerably enlarged.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the doors seen from below.
Fig, 4 is an inverted plan viewjfjof a modi- .ied form of door in which the arrangement of the strengthening webs on the under side of the door is dierent from that shown in the-first three figures. Y
Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are similar views vshowing di'erent arrangements of the strengthening webs.
Referring rst to Figs. .1, 2 and 3, the side walls of the car are shown at -10 and which doors 13, 13 are hinged. Eachl of these7 doors is composed of an integral casting having a smoothv upper face 14 and depending marginal flanges 15, 16, 17 and 18.v
19, 19 are hinge lugs formed on ange 15. The structure is rigidied by means of a lurality of webs cast integral with the ocr which project from the under Surface of the door and preferably radiate from a boss 20,` webs 21 extending to the corners 0f the door and webs 22 to the side marginal flanges. In addition there may be a number of shorter triangular webs 23. Preferably the webs are deepest at the center of the door and taper down to the width of the marginal flanges into which they merge. .In order to provide additional strength at the hinges a pair of webs 24, 24 bridge the space between the marginal ange 15 and the adjacent diagonal webs 21 near each hinge lug. The fixed members 25 of the hinges are fastened to the center sill of the car, this structure comprising a T iron, the iianges 26 ofwhich overlap the inner edges of the doors.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4 the door 13a is provided withlongitudinally eX- tending strengthening webs 27 and transverse webs 28, the latter aligned with the hinge lugs 29.
' In F ig.` 5 the door 13b `is formed with a pair of transverse webs 30 aligned with the hinge lugs 31, The space between webs 30 is reinforced by a pair of intersecting webs 32, 3 2 and the spaces outside of webs 32 by diagonal webs 33.
In Fig. 6 the door 13 is formed with a plurality of webs 34 which extend in a fanlike arrangement from the portion of the door between the hinge lugs 35.
In Fig. 7 a door 13d is shown having two pairs of curved webs 36, 36, the webs of each pair coming together at the hinge lugs 37 nd at a point on the opposite edge of the oor.
v In Fig. 8 the door 13e is formed with a large circular boss 38 and strengthening webs 39 extending outwardly from the boss.
In Fig. 9 the door 13f has a long web 40 extending from each hinge lug 41 to the remote corner of the door and a short web 42 from the-hinge lug to the adjacent end of the door, in addition to which there are two diagonal webs 43extending across the corners of the door opposite the hinge lugs.
vIn each case the arrangement of the webs is such as to carry stresses imposed upon the door structure to hinges by means of which the doors are connected with the car body. I claim: l. 1. A door forming a portion of the bottom of a railway car of the dumping type consisting of an integral casting having a. smooth upper -surface and formed on its lower surface with dependingmarginal l anges, one of said flanges being formed with hinge lugs.
2. A door forming a portion of the bottom of a railway car of the dumping type consisting of an integral castmg having--v a Smooth, upper surface, depending marginal ianges one of which is formed with hinge lugs, and reinforcing webs which terminate substantially at said lugs.
3. A door formi a portion of the bottom of a railway lcar o the dumping type consisting pf an integral casting having a smooth upper surface, depending marginal flanges one bf whichis formed with hinge lugs, and diagonally disposed reinforcing webs which terminate substantially at said lugs.
4. of a railway car of the dumping type consisting ofv an integral casting having a lsmooth upper surface and formed at one side with hinge lugs and on the lower surface with reinforcing webs.
5. A door forming a portion of the bottom of a railway-car of the dumping type consisting of an integral casting formed on its under surface withl marginal flanges, a cen- A door vforming a portion of the bottom` tral boss, and reinforcing webs extending from said boss to the flanges.
6. A door formin a portion of the bottom ofa railway car o the dumping type consisting of an integral casting formed on its under surface with marginal flanges, a central boss, and reinforcing webs extending. from said boss to the corners and edgesof the door. v
7. `A door forming a portion of the bottom of a railway car of the dumping type consisting of an integral casting formed on its under surface with a centrally disposed boss and reinforcing webs extending from said bossv to the edges of the door.
8. A door forming a portion of the bottom of a railway car of the dumping type condoor, diagonally arranged webs extending .from the boss to the corners of the door, and
Webs bridging the space between the side of the lmarginal iiange having the hinge lugs and the adjacent reinforcing )webs and alignedl with said hingelu s.
