Patented May 29, 1923.
ELMER ROBERTS AND RAYMOND F. DOT SC II, O'E OLYMPIA, WASHINGTOII.
HINGE.
Application filed June 27, 1922. Serial No. 571,148.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, -ELMER O. ROBERTS and RAYMOND Fl- DOTSCH, citizens ofthe United States of America, residing at Olympia, in the county of Thurston and State of \Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges;
and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hinges,having for anobjectto provide .a hinge especially designed for use in the hinging or pivoting of the legs of a folding or collapsible table to the top section of the same, being of such construction as will permit of the swinging of the leg engaged thereby to position adjacent and in substantial arallelism to the top section when not in use and to permit swinging of theleg in'a reverse direction into a position at substan tially right angles to said. top section, whereat the squared upper end of the leg will engage or abut an adjacent portion of said top section for rigidly supporting it.
It is likewise an object of the invention to provid eia table leg hinge which is of such construction-and design as will firmly retain the leg in a set up position with relation to the tabletop section, means being provided for locking the hinge in that position and by consequence, prevent undesired collapsing of the table.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter;
In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, we have in the accompanying illustrative drawings and in the detailed following description based thereon, set out one possible embodiment of the same.
In these drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a folding table equipped with the improved hinge;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detail in elevation showing the position of the hinge when the leg is in folded position together with the position of the hinge when the leg is in set up position, the latter being shown in dotted dash lines; and,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail in perspective of the improved hinge, showing its position when the table leg is in a Fset up position. a
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, 1 represents the top of a foldablc table provided with the usual number of legs 2' for supporting the same. In order that said legs 2 may be hingedly connectedto the under side of the table top 1, the invention is utilized, and in this direction, may be stated to comprise a substantially right angularly formed strap metal arm 8 having bearing sleeves 4 formed upon the top of its ends while openings 5 are formed in the right angularly disposed portions of the same and serve for a purpose which will be subsequently described.
Attaching fingers or plates 6 and 7 are provided the device and have each a hearing sleeve v8 upon certain of their extremities adapted to be received between the spaced bearing sleeves 4 on the opposite ends of the arm 3, whereby a pintle or pivot pin 9 may be passed therethrough for an obvious purpose. Also, outwardly disposed staples or eyelets 10 arefixedly carried upon the outer surfaces of these attaching fingers or plates 6 and 7 and are so positioned as to be received through the opening 5 in-the angularly disposed portion of the arm 3 when the hinge is in such position as to retain the table leg 2 in its set up or supporting position. In this connection, it is to be noted that the attaching fingerof plate 6 is secured to one side of the upper end of the table leg 2, while the attaching finger of plate 7 is secured to a portion of the under side of the table top 1 in proximity to one end portion of the same as clearly shown in the Figure 3. Thus, When the leg 2 is in its folded or non-supporting position, the same will be arranged adjacent the normally upper side of the table top 1 and in substantial parallelism thereto as shown in the Figure 2, inasmuch as the longer angular portion of the arm 3 will correspond to that distance between its outer end and the adjacent end of said table top and W111 permit said leg to be swung outwardly and then upwardly to a position adjacent said normally upper side of the table top, the shorter angular portion of the right angularly formed arm being of a length slightly greater than the thickness of the table top inorderthat theattaehing finger of plate '6 may bewswung outwardly-from the same to a position at substantiallyright. angles. thereto, whereupon the "table leg, avill be in its folded ornon-supporting position.
When the table leg is swung to its setv up position, the squared upper end of the same Willabut ttPOltlOIlpOf the, under side;
of the table top in the manner shown in the Figure 3, While the right angu lanly formed arm 3 Will afford an effectual-icons nection and brace "between the same and said table top. "To prevent Ll'IlClIlBMIIlOVQY- men-tof'ithe arm 3 together With the leg 2 with relation: to the; table top, a forked locking member indicated by thenumer-al 11 is provided. and is adapted to have its oppositely disposed legs'passe'd through the ex tended portions of the staples or eyelets 1-0 passing through' the openings-=5 in th-e an gu larly' disposed portionsof 'saidmarm.
Thus, said arm will: be" prevented fromiha'v: ing material movement with 'relat on t'o the table top or leg and hence,'--theflatten v will be firmly secured in its-"set up 'posi tion. To prevent-floss of the locking-device 11, a suitable connection such was a chain 12 may be a nd 'preiterab'lyf is co'nnected to the looped h andle portion of the 1 same and to an adjacent portion of the tabletop;
