Description

M. H. HALL.
Machines for Cutting Leather for Boot and Shoe Heels.
Patented Dec. 16,1873.
Wineflf UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
MERRITT H. HALL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR CUTTING LEATHER FOR BOOT AND SHOE HEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,647, dated December 16, 1873 application filed October 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MERRITT H. HALL, of
the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Machine for Cutting Leather for Shoe- Heels and other purposes, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in a combination of a toggle-lever with a crankshaft, having either a continuous or reciprocating rotary motion, and cutting-block moved in the cutting operation by the toggle-lever, and in the intervals between cutting is operated by a reciprocating crankshaft, operated by the main crank-shaft, so as to withdraw the cutting-block, and afford the operator at full view and free access to the cutter or die; and also to so move the blocks as to present another part of the surface to the action of the cutter at each successive operation of the machine.
I will now proceed to describe particularly the construction and operation of my invention, referring in so doing to the drawing annexed, and letters of reference marked thereon.
The same letters apply to the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 shows a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of the machine. Both figures are drawn to a scale of one and one-half inch per foot. Figs. 3 and 4 show modifications of parts. v
A represents the frame of the machine; B and B, a pair of toggle-levers, hung from a shaft, B G, a connecting-rod, conveying motion from the crank D in the shaft D to the toggle levers. E is a circular block, susceptible of rotation on the boltE by which it is fastened to the under side of the plate E The plate E may be slotted to permit of adjustment of the bolt lengthwise. The front end of the plate E is attached to the bottom of the toggle-lever B and the rear end is attached to a crank, G, from which it receives a reciprocating motion. The crank-shaft G receives motion from the, shaft B by means of a crank, B and connecting-rod G bearing a rack, which engages in the teeth of a wheel, G on the shaft G In vibrating back and forth, the block E is rotated by a stationary pawl, E fastened to the frame A. The cutter or die H, placed with its edge upward on the base of the machine, and a lever, I, and plunger J, serve to discharge the cut pieces of leather from it. The crank B and the crank D are fixed in such a relative angular adjust ment to each other that the block E is over the cutter H, and practically stationary when the toggles B and B are extended into a straight line, and when the toggles B and B are drawn up, the block E is drawn backward out of the way of the operator.
WVhen the machine is propelled by steam or water power, I operate the shaftl) with a continuous rotary movement, employing a clutch to promptly disconnect the shaft from the driving power of the fly-wheel D When the ma chine is to be worked entirely by the operator, I fasten the fly-wheel tightly on the shaft, and on the rim of the wheel D fasten a weight, D in such position as to leave the toggles flexed when the weight D is at the lowest point in the wheel. I impart partially rotative motion to the shaft D by a chain, K, which is fastened by one end to a staple, K, in the shaft D, and wraps half-way around the shaft. The other end of the chain is fastened to a treadle, L, which, when depressed by the foot of the operator, causes the chain K to unwrap from the shaft D and rotates it. The momentum of the wheel D and weight 1) causes the shaft to make a complete revolution in the opposite direction, and wraps the chain K upon it, leaving it ready for the next impression. For the rack and pinion, a lever and connecting-rod, or a pinion and sector worked by a connecting rod, may be substituted. These modifications are shown in Figs; 3 and 4. Their applications are obvious on inspection of the figures.
What I claim as my invention is-- l. The combination of the reciprocating block E and toggle-levers B and B operated by the cranks D and B as set forth and de scribed.
2. The reciprocating block E, operated as described, in combination with the stationary pawl E as set forth.
MERRITT H. HALL.
