Application filed June 8,
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL ALLEN USHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chunky, in the county of Newton and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to furnaces or fire boxes for boilers and has for an object the provision of a detachable auxiliary furnace which may be used in connection with a portable or other boiler without in any manner changing the structure of the boiler.
Another object is the provision of an auxiliary furnace for boilers in which the greatest depth of fuel will be located adjacent the boiler and the formation of the crown of the fire box disposed so as to direct products of combustion in a direction toward the boiler.
Another object is the provision of an auxiliary furnace for boilers having one end constructed so as to detachably receive the end of the boiler in a manner that the latter will receive the full benefit of the heat.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended'claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portable boiler equipped with the invention.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section taken through the auxiliary furnace and the ad jacent end of the boiler on an enlarged scale the section being taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 3.
Figure 3 is a partial horizontal section on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a transverse section through the auxiliary furnace.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a portable boiler of the usual or any preferred construction. The latter is equipped with the usual fire box and is provided with a feed door 11 and an ashpit door 12 which, when the boiler is used in connection with the auxiliary furnace are opened to permit of products of combustion to pass through from the auxiliary furnace into the boiler.
The auxiliary furnace which comprises 1920. Serial No. 387,421.
the present invention includes side walls 13 and an end wall 1 1, these walls being connected by a top wall or crown 15. The walls 13, 14L and 15 may be constructed of any suitable material such as brick or sheet iron and are preferably provided with a lining 16 of fiber. The end wall 14 is provided with a feed opening .17 and an ashpit opening 18, both of said openings being controlled by doors 19 and 20, by means of which the draft of the furnace may also be regulated. The opposite end of the furnace is open for the reception of the end of the boiler 10 and for this purpose the top wall or crown 15 terminates short of the end walls 13, while the said walls are also connected by an inset bar 21. The end of the boiler may thus be received Within the open end of the auxiliary furnace with the side walls 13 overlapping the side walls of the furnace.
The auxiliary furnace is provided with longitudinal grate bars 22 which extend downwardly and rearwardly toward the boiler 10 so that the greatest fuel depth is located adjacent the boiler and consequently the greatest amount of heat is generated at this point. In addition, the top wall or crown 15 is inclined rearwardly and downwardly toward the boiler 10 so that the products of combustion are directed rearwardly through the doors 11 and 12. The top wall or crown 15 is preferably transversely curved or arched and the height of this arch is located immediately above the water line of the boiler when the boiler and furnace are connected by the use of the auxiliary boiler, the heat capacity is greatly increased so that an increased quanity of steam will result. In addition, the furnace may burn a fuel of green wood, the capacity of the auxiliary furnace being such as to permit of portions of the wood drying while the remainder is being consumed.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is The combination with a boiler, of a re movable auxiliary furnace including a top -wall, end Wall and side Walls, the latter extending beyond the end of the top Wall to receive the end of the boiler furnace Within the open end of the auxiliary furnace with the end Wall of the former abutting the edge 5 of the top Wall of the latter and with the side Walls of the auxiliary furnace overlapping the side walls of the boiler, a transversely arranged grate supporting bar Within the auxiliary furnace and abutting the boiler, a grate, doors located in the end Wall 10 above and below the grate and an insulated I lining for the auxiliary furnace.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
SAMUEL ALLEN USHER.
