Patented May l5, 1923.
UNITED STATES T, OF BOANOKE, VIRGINIA.
CHOKE FOB SHOTGUNS.
Application led August 2, 1922. Serial No. 579,209.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. RmnnnAn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke in the county of Roanoke and State of Vzirginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chokes for Shotguns, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention relates to an attachment for firearms, the general object of the invention being to provide means wherebv the barrel may be choked to suit different shooting conditions by insertin any one of a number of choke devices, w ich are of different sizes.
Another object of the invention is to form threads on the choke tubes to engage the threaded part of the barrel and to provide a lock device for holding the tube against movement during shooting.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sev; eral views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a gun barrel with the invention in place.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail view of the device itself.
As shown in these views, the device consists of a tube 1, which is formed with a cylindrical part 2, having a beveled end 3, a threaded part 4, of eater diameter than the part 2 and a knur ed head 5 which permits the tube to be put in position and removed from the barrel. I prefer to make the threads interrupted as shown. These tubes are made of different sizes, so as to (rive, for instance, cylinder, modified and zfull choke. The tube engages the barrel as shown with its beveled end abutting the bevel shoulder 6 of the barrel, the plain part fitting snu ly the art 7 and the threads engaging t e threa s of the barrel, with the head abutting the end of the barrel. A latch 8 is provided for holding the tube a ainst turning movement while shooting.
his latch is dovetailed into the barrel.
From the above it will be seen that the gun can be easily and quickly changed to l make it capable of being used with a choke of the required size for various conditions of shooting. For instance, if one is shooting in a eld, he would use the modified choke tube and if one then passes into a woods he would remove the modified tube and re lace it by the cylinder tube, and so on. T is renders it unnecessary to have different guns to secure the different chokes and the tubes are so small they can be easily carried on the person.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such chauffes fall within the scope of the appended c aims.
Having thus described my invent-ion what I claim isz- 1. A gun barrel having its outer end provided with a cylindrical part of greater diameter than the bore, a tapered shoulder connecting the said cylindrical part with the bore and a screw threaded part of reater diameter than the cylindrical part iaving interchangeable choke tubes, each provided with a cylindrical part for engaging the cylindrical part of the bore, a tapered end for engaging the tapered shoulder and a screw threaded part for engaginw the threaded part of the barrel, a knurled head on each tube overlapping the outer end of the barrel and means for loekingthe tube in the barrel.
2. A'gun barrel having its outer end provided with a c lindrical part of Greater diameter than t e bore, a tapered shoulder connecting the said cylindrical part with the bore and a screw threaded part of greater diameter than the cylindrical part having interchangeable choke tubes, each provided with a cylindrical part for engaging the cylindrical part of the bore, a tapered end for engaging the tapered shoulder, a screw threaded part for engaging the threaded part of the barrel, a knurled head on each tube overlapping the outer end of the barrel, means for locking the tube in the barrel, such means consisting of a latch dove-tailed into the barrel.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EDWARD L. RHINEHART.
