Description

May 15, 1923.
1,455,612 c. M. HEETER PIPE GRIP Filed'June 8, 1921 INVENTOR.
CHARLES M. nEETEn, or
PIPE- Application filed June 8,
T 0 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. HEETER, residing at Butler, Butler County, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe Grips, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates broadly'to grips, and more particularly to pipe grlps adapted for use in connection with pipes, tubes, and casings utilized in well constructions.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a pipe grip having a main rigid body portion provided with a plurality of independent gripping sections mounted thereon.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a. grip of the character described, having a body portion presenting seats extending in angular relation one to the other and adapted to receive independent gripping sections.
Another object of the invention is to provide a curved body portion provided with gripping sections having their gripping faces extending at an oblique'angle and spaced to provide a pocket therebetween.
A still further object ofthe invention is to provide a device of the character de scribed, in which the body portion is provided with an eye on one end thereof and a horn on the other end thereof adapted to cooperate with a gripping cable.
The foregoing and other objects of the present invention, together with their attendant advantages, will be apparent as the invention becomes better understood by ref erence to the accompanying specification and drawings forming a partthereof, it being premised that changes may be made in the various details and manner of operation within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device illustrated in operative position;
Figure 2 is a face view of the device having one of the gripping sections removed therefrom; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the gripping sections.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is illustrated a pipe grip, which preferably comprises a rigid main body portion 2, constructed in one piece by casting or otherwise, as found convenient. Adjaone of titans reins.
BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
GRIP.
1921. Serial No. 476,056.
cent oneend'of the body portion there is formed an eye 8, while adjacent. the other end there is provided a horn 4. It will be apparent that one end of the gripping cable is adapted to be secured in the eye 3, as is customary in devices of this general nature; while the opposite end of the cable is passed around the pipe 6 to be operated upon and then over the horn 4, enabling. the pipe grip to be firmly held in operative position.
According to the preferred form of the invention, the main body portion is curved intermediate the eye 3 and the horn 4, to provide seats 7 and 8, respectively, extending at an oblique angle one to the other. Adjacent one end of each of the seats is formed a pocket 9 having one flat end wall 10 and a curved end wall 11. The seats and pocketsare adapted to receive gripping sections 12, each having a series of gripping teeth 13 directed in the same general direction and provided with projections 14 each having a flat wall and a curved wall conforming to the pockets before described. Due to this construction, it is impossible to insert the gripping sections with the gripping teeth extending in the wrong direction, and the curved surfaces of the pockets and projections cooperate to guide the gripping sections into such position that openings 15 in the projections are brought into alinement with openings 16 in the body portion 2, whereby rivets or bolts may be passed therethrough for locking the sections in position.
In order to firmly hold these gripping sections, the body portion may be provided adjacent each of its ends, with shoulders 17 adapted to cooperate with the ends of the gripping sections.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, these gripping sections are of generally rectangular shape, with body portions of substantially uniform thickness whereby the gripping faces thereof extend substantially parallel to the seats 7 and 8 and form an obtuse angle. These sections are of such length that a pocket 18 is formed between the inner ends thereof and between the curved face 19 of the body member into which a portion of the periphery of the object being operated upon is adapted to extend.
It has heretofore been proposed to construct pipe grips of a plurality of pivoted sections, but such devices have been more or .less objectionable in actual use due to the tendency of the same to slide outwardly from the periphery of the pipe being gripped,
particularly when used in connectionwith pipes of comparatively small diameters. With a construction such as illustrated herein, this objectionable tendency is overcome by the provision of a one-piece-rigid body portion which is curved in such manner that it'is adapted to cooperate with pipes of a plurality of difler'ent sizes within the range from minimum to maximum, as clearly illustrated in the drawings. The tighter the cable 5 is drawn around the pipe 6, the tighter the gripping teeth 13 will be drawn into engagement with the periphery of the pipe. This action will not be accompanied by any tendency of the body portion to buckle and move the gripping teeth outwardly away from the surface being gripped, as is the case with sectional grips.
The advantages of the present invention arise from the provision of a rigid body portion having gripping section s extending at an obtuse angle one to the other.
Still -further advantages of the invention arise from the means for attaching the gripping sections in position whereby reversal thereof is prevented and accurate positioning is insured.
I claim: I
A device of the character described, comprising a rigid body portion having a plurality of gripping sections maintained in fixed relation thereon, each gripping section having a plurality of gripping teeth in 0perative position, there being an eye adjacent set my hand.
