SPLIT DEMOUNTABLE RIM.
Application filed August 9, 1920. Serial No. 402,200.
T 0 all whom it may concern citizen of the United States. residing at 'essington. in the county of Beadle and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Split Demountable Rims, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved split demountable rim for use in connection with automobile tires and an object of the invention is to provide a simple, efficient and practical device of this kind in which novel features of construction are involved and which may be manufactured for a relatively low cost and sold at a reasonable profit.
One of the features of construction consists in the provision of a sectional or two part rim, means for hinging the parts together, whereby one is capable of movement partially within the other, the hinge connections being on the inside of the inner surface of the rim, in combination with improved means for detachably connecting the other ends of the rim sections or two parts. 7 Still another object is the provision of a pivoted member mounted on one of the detachably connected ends, constructed of spring material and adapted to engage under a spring clasp carried by an adjacent end of the other rim section thereby holding the adjacent ends of the twosections together.
A further object is to provide the adjacent ends of the two sections with abutting parts instead of oblique abutting ends with the above means for holding the abutting means together.
While the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible of changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed,

One leaf of the hinge is secured at 4 to the section 1 while the other leaf is connected to the section 2 as at 5. By means of the hinges it will be noted that the section 1 is capable of being moved so that the free end of the section 1 may extend partially within the section 2 as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1.
Operatively connected to the section 1 as at 6 is a spring clasp or holder 7 This clasp or holder is constructed of any suitable resilient material such as spring steel or the like and is formed or bent to provide a keeper or recess 8, which is preferably angular in shape. I
Pivoted as at 9 to the section 1 is a fastener 10 which is also constructed of spring material such as spring steel or the like for cooperation with the holder or clasp to hold the detachably connected ends of the rim sections together. In other words, the fastener 10 is elongated and is of a width corresponding to the width of the recess 8 of the holder or clasp, so that when the fastener or member 10 'is swung laterally under the free end portion 11 of the holder or clasp, the fastener will engage in the recess 8 and thereby hold the detachably connected ends of the rim sections securely together. By means of this construction the abutting ends of the rim sections are prevented from lateral movement in either direction. Furthermore, the adjacent ends of the rim sections are prevented from springin apart, that is to say, either of the detacha 1y connected ends of the two sections is prevented from springing outwardly, or inwardly until the fastener is unlatcheld; B forcing the fastener or member 10 lateral y ofthe rim in one direction, will cause it to disengage from the recess 8 of the clasp. A return movement of said member so that it will assume a position in alignment and concentric with the rim, Will cause it to reengage with said recess 8. When the fastener or member 10 is disengaged from the recess, the adjacent ends of the sections 1 and 2 may be disconnected, whereupon the rim section 1 may be moved partially Within the rim section 2, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, thereby permitting the rim to be removed from the tire and vice versa.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is The. combination with a pair of rim sec tions, of means for hingedly uniting said sections, said rim sections having separable abutting ends, a fastening lever pivoted to the inner surface of the rim adjacent one of said abut-ting ends and adapted to assume a position in alignment and concentric With the rim and overlying the other abutting end when the two ends adjoin, a clasp operatively. carried on the inner surface of the rim near one edge and adjacent said other abutting end, said clasp being constructed of spring metal and provided with an angular recess to correspond to and receive the fastening lever transversely, said clasp assuming a position transversely of the rim and overlying the lever, whereby upon springing the free end of the clasp inwardly of the rim, said lever may be moved laterally on its pivot to separate the abutting ends.
