J. K. WILKENS DEMOUNTABLE RIM Filed Oct. 27 1922 lthSZ JACOB K. WILKENS. OF MUSCATINE, IOWA.
DEMOUNTABLE RIM.
Application filed October 27, 1922.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JACOB hf. VILKnNs, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Muscatino, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Demountable Rims; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;
The invention relates to demountable rims and more particularly to such rims which comprise sections, whereby to facilitate the mounting and dismounting of pneuinatfc tires. l j
Specifically considered, the invention relates to a demountable rim embodying sections of unequal length and which sections when assembled are made secure by means constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various ch anges in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure l is a perspective view of the adjacent ends of a sectional rim provided with locking means embodying the invention, said ends being separated.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section, and
Figure 3 a transverse section.
Corres onding and like parts are referred to in the i'ollowing description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numerals l and 2 designate adjacent ends of sections comprising a demountable rim which may be of any usual construction. The end 1 is provided with an opening 3 adjacent the joint formed between the two ends when the latter are assembled. A U- Serial No. 597,317.
shaped keeper 4 is provided upon the inner or rear side of the end l in the rear of the opening 3 and the opposite side members are undercut, as shown most clearly in Figure 3. The open side of the keeper 4 is adjacent the opening 3. A. locking slide 5 mounted within the keeper 4 and is slidable through the open side thereofacross the opening 3 to secure the joint formed between the ends of the adjacent rim sections. A tongue 6, carried by the 4section 2, projects beyond the end thereof a distance to overlap the end of the section ll and is provided at its outer end with an otlistanding projection or lip 7 which enters the opening 3 and is retained therein by the locking slide 5 which is moved outwardly so as to overlap the element 7. The part 6 may be formed with the section 2 or may be attached thereto in any manner. A screw 8 or like fastening secures the locking slide 5 when projected into locking engagement with the lip 0r projecting part 7. Then the screw 8 is removed, the locking slide 5 may be withdrawn into the keeper 4 so as to clear the opening 3 and thereby admit oi separating or placing the sections l and 2 in position. The several parts, such as the keeper 4, locking slide 5 and tongue 6, appear on the inner or rear side of the rim so as to occupy a position adjacent the felly band of the wheel when the rim is in position thereon.
lVhat is claimed is:
Means for securing the separable ends of a demountable rim, the same comprising an opening formed in one of the ends, a substantially U-shaped keeper on the end provided with the opening and having the open side adjacent the said opening, a locking slide mounted in the keeper and adapted to be moved to extend over said opening, a tongue projecting from the companion end of the rim and having a projection or lip adapted to enter the said opening and retained therein by the locking slide, and means for securing the locking slide in operative position.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
JACOB K. VVILKENS.
