Specification of Zhetters l'atent. l atente l Oct. 26, 19 20.
- Application filed novemper 25; 1919. Serial No. 340.487."
To all whom it may concern Be it known that'I, Gnonen HnRBEnT'LA CHESTER, a subject of the King, of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Armourer -Mills, Montgomery street, in the c1 ty.of
Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relat-. ing to Vehicle-Bonnets, of'which the following is a-specification.
This, invention has for'its object-to pro-' vide an improved bonnet for motor vehicles and also means for securing the'same. The invention comprises the-employment of a pair of vertical sides and a top all of which are hingedly connected .in', a separate manner permitting the-topv to be disconnected from eitherside and swung back on the other, or to be detached from both sides.
' Further theinvention comprises means for with this invention.
fastening the interengagin'g sides and top as hereinafter edges of the described. In the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings: c. Figure 1 is a cross section showing a motor vehicle bonnetconstruct'ed in accordance Fig. 2 is a side elevation the bonnet showing one of the fastenings.
Fi 3- is a section tive astening;
In carrying v shown, apair of sheet metal sides 'a are beaded along their upper edges,' and the provided. with the sides and to be rotated'ther'eon in .a hinge? like manner. The lower edges ofthe sides are sides re against accidental separation by any suitable fast'enings. Preferably the fastenin s areconstructed" from the follow-"- i a boss 6 in which can both slideand'rotate a pin f'carrying at its inner can grip the roun of a portion of' illustrating an alternathe invention iinto' elfect asv of a sheet metal'gtop b are shaped to a grooved; formation which-em ables them'to engage'fthe, beaded edges of hingedl'y and detachably' connected to lugs e or otherpiece's .onthe, vehicle frame in anyconvenient'manner. I A Theqinteren'gaging 'dges of the top and .tion comprising a spring h acting on the stemiholds the claw in engagement with the top. The spring may be coiled around the stem as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be constructed in. the form of a loop having one end secured to the plate and the other arranged to abut on the} At its outer end the stem', is rovided with an operating handled as in cation thereto of an operatin ke we or more such fastenings are tted to. each side. I I
.T p n. p fastening on one side is first pressed in 'ward' and then rotated. This releases the fastenings from'engagement with the top. The top can-then be detached fromengage- 'ment' with that side and'swung back on its hinge connection'with 'the'other side, Thus the top can be detached. at either side while-- retainin connected can be swung outward about its lower pivotal connection with the chassis or frame. ..Or the saidside canbe detached from the frame. If desired the top can be disconnected at both sides and lifted'aw'ay" leavin' both sides free. v Having thus described my invention what I claim as'new and desire to secure by Let zters Patent is j I. a
a v 1. jIn motor vehicle bonnets, the 'combi nation comprising a top and a. pair of sides;
4 its connection withthe opposite i side. T e side from-which the topis dismeans whereby the adjacent edgesv of the said parts can" be detachably engaged in ,a Y
hinge like manner, and spring controlled 'means for detachably securing thev said edges, substantially. as described.
2,'In motor vehicle bonnets,- nation comprisinga pair of sides and a top, a bead along one edge of each side, and a: groove along a pair of edges'of the" to the bead andoove ff adj acentedges of the conibie top and side eing z iapted to permita detach:
able hinge connection between said 'ed es,;' and'sprin controlled means for detachail yi '-"securing t e interengaging edges of. theifop and sides, substantially as described.
f 3. In motor vehicle bonnets, the combinae bead along one .e
gair of sides anda go of each side and' a,.
5 l the bonnet the stem of each v a groove along apair of edges of the top, the ead and groove of adjacent edges of the top and side being adapted to permit a detachable hinge connection between said edges a 5 plurality of claws on each side capable of receiving longitudinal and rotational movements and adapted to detachebly retain the interengaging edges of the corresponding side and top in hinge connection, and a spring onea'ch claw for retaining it in 210- 10 tion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I 'have signed my name tothis specification.
