FRAME FOR SUPPORTING TRANSPARENT PLATES.
Application filed March 21, 1922. Serial no. 545,549.
direct currents of air from striking the person or thing shielded or for other purposes. Such shields arecommonly used over the dasher or front of vehicles that travel at a high rate of speed, protecting the riders against the air currents caused by the velocity of the vehicle or otherwise and also from the dust entrained in the air.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a shield or like device of non-fragile material and of such flexibility that it may be bent double if desired and to provide with it a jointed or hinged frame whereby the device may be attached too-r detached from an object and folded orextended at will.
These and other obj ects'are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a windshield made in accordance with the invention, one of the staying elementsbeing shown in a released position;
Fig. 2 is a view of the same in end elevae tion;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a fragmental sectional view taken through the shield frame on line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig 2 but v showing the shield in a folded position Fig. 6 is a view indicating the invention as embodied in a cover for a container; and
Fig. 7 is a view of a modified form of frame.
The main element of the invention consists of a plate, or sheet 10 of transparent flexible and non-fragile material out to suit the device with which it is intended to be used and held in a frame which may be composed of angle irons 9, the longer sides 11 of which are parallel with the plate 10 while the shorter sides 12form a laterally projecting edge on the frame. V
In the constructionshown inFigs. 1 to 5 inclusive, a clamp strip 14 is also used, the same being secured to the angle irons 9 by screws, rivets or pins 15, which pass through the plate 10, strip 1 1 and-angle irons 9 and also preferably through cushioning elements 16, disposedupon either side of the plate 10 in such a manneras to form a tight joint between it and the strip 14: and dies 11 of the angle irons and to protect its edges; 'In the preferred form of the frame, shown in Fig. 7, the sides 11 of the angle irons are provided with grooves whichi receivezcorrespondingly shaped ribs or'beads on the strips 14:. I i
The frame is preferably comprised'of upper and lower sections joined by angular out-turned side elements 18 and 20 respectively which are pivotedtogether by pins 19,
these elements acting in the manner 'offa hinge.
20 and may operate l'imitedly within the slots 21, formed in the elements 18. The
The pivots 19 are fastened in theelement slots 21 extend angularly at their inner" sides as indicated at 22. ,Rotatably mounted on the pivots 19 are rollers 24:, extendlng past the inner edges of the frame and over which the plates 10 are'bent when the shield is folded, as shown in Figure 4.' i
Whenit is desired to extend. the shield,
levers 25 pivoted on pins 26 to the lower frame section and provided with operating handles 27 at their free ends, are turned upwardly, engaging with fixed clips 28, se-
cured to the upper section of the frame in such a manner as'to extend inwardly and to hold the levers in an upright position.
The sections of the frame are supported by the pivot pins 19 which are mounted in ,v
10 between the side elements 18 and 20 and overlie the edges of the plate when the sect-ions flof, the shield are folded as shown in and rear, the latter being of greater height than the front. Engaged centrally of the sidewalls 65 are supportingbrackets 68, haying pivoted in their upper ends on the pins 69, the upturned elements '70 and 71 of the cover plates 72 and 73, the same corresponding to theelements18 and 20 of the wind shield.
The .cover 72 has-engaged at its lower side an ,ear 74: which receives a pin 75, carried at the end of segment rack 76, engaged with a pinion79, fixed upon a short spindle 80 and adapted to be operatiyely engaged by a suitable lever handle (not shown). By this means,'the pinion 7 9 may be turned, thus transmittingmotion to the rack 76 and raising the cover plate 7 in an obvious manner.
The Opposite cover plate 73 has attached to t an ear 84; in which is pivoted the upper [end of a rack 85 meshing with a pinion 86 fixed on ;a spindle=87 actuated by a crank handle in a similar manner to the spindle 80. The racks '76 and 85 are arranged to IIlOVB'lIl guides 69 preferably provided with rollers (notsliown) against which the rear edges'of the racks T6 and 85 make contact.
; Having thus describedmy invention what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patents, ,is* v a 1. Ina wind shield, the ,combinationwith a seetiona l-f ran e, of a plate of flexible material engagedwithintsaid fra1ne,'a pair-of hinges extended obliquely outward from the- .shorter sides of said frame whereby the secangle irons. V p v 4. A foldable wind shield comprising a tions may be folded, and levers-secured to said frame sides adapted to hold the frame rigidly when in an extended position.
2. Ina wind shield, a'rigidframe having an upper and lower section, a flexible transparent plate secured in said; frame and a extending between the sections thereof,
cushioning elements interposed between said plate and said frame members, hinged elements secured to each of said sections, said hinge elements extending outward. to one side i of said frame, levers secured to one of said sections, *and clips secured to the other of said sections engageable by said lever-whereby said frame maybe held in. an extended position. i
3. Ina wind shield. the combination with a frame, of a sheet vof flexible material mounted thereon, hinged joints combined with the shorter sidesof said frame whereby said sheet maybe folded, said frame eomprising angle irons having their longer sides arranged for engagement with the surface of the edge portions of the sheet, and being formed with longitudinally extend- .ing grooves, and ineansvfor securing the edge portions of the sheet to the frame comprising strips provided with ribs adapted to within the grooves .of the fit over the sheet fixed frame-section, means for supporting said section in upr ght position, a movable frame section hinged to said fixed frame se'ci tion and adapted toswingQdoavnward in section and upward into upright position in alignment with said fixed frame section, a
folded position parallel with said fixed frame continuous flexibletransparent plate secured v to said frame section, means atthe hinge .of said section for bending said plate, and means for locking saidmovablesectionin upright position. 1
In testimony that I claim the foregoing asn y invention, I have signed my name hereunder, V V a AUGUST O F
