LIMUUSINE BODY FOR BABY CARRIAGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 10, 19122.
Application ledlMarch 24, 1921. Serial No. 454,988.
T all w zom it may concern.'
Be it known that I. Pirrnr. lT. Siii'rii, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at St. Paul` in the count-y of Ramsey and State otl Minnesota. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Limousine 1octies tor Baby Carriages, of which the tollowing is a specification. Y
My invention relates to limousine bodies Yfor baby carriages. An object is to provide a device of this character which may be entirely closed to protect the child from the weather and which may be opened up to any desired extent to admit air. Another object to provide a device of this' character'in which the top portion may either be entirely removed duringwarm weather or in which frames containing glass may be replaced by frames containing screen material.
The full objects and advantages ot my iiiientioii will appear in connection'with the detailed description. and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be pai'- ticularly pointed out in the claims. A
ln the accompanying drawings which illustrate the application of my invention in one imam-Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of in v device showing it in closed position iii full lines and in opened position in dottedlines. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view ot the device detached from the supportingconstruction. 3 is a rear elevational view of the body. Fig. is a traginentary view showing the manner ofattacliiiig .i hinge. Fig. 5 is a view in section on the line of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a side elevational view iii Vwhich the entire superstructure has been removed. Fig. 'l' is a plan view of hinge in which onehinge member overliesanother hinge member. Fig. 8 is a plan view ofthe lower hinge member; Fig. 9 is a plan view of the upper lhinge member; Fig. 10 is a view in section on the line 10--10 of Fig. 7 Fig. 11 is a view in section on the line 11--11 ol' Fig. '.7; Fig. 12 is a view in section on the line 12 12 of Fig. T; F 13 is a view similar to Fig. 12 but showing the hinge partly opened; la is a view similar to the two preceding views but showing the hinge opened into its position for separating the two members. Fig. 15 is a view in section on the line 15-,-15 of Fig. 2. Fig. 16 is a view in section on the line 16-16 of Fig. 2. Fig. 17 is a view in section on the line 17-17 ot Fig. 1. Fig. 18 is a side elevational view f of a detachable screen member.
As shown in the drawings, the limousine body comprises a box portion 20 and a caby portion 22, the latter being hinged to the box portion as indicated generally at 2l. The box portion 20 may be mounted for 'use in suitable manner as by' 'securing it to springs 26 associated with a frame mounted on wheels 28 so that the carriage may be pushed by handles 30. The box portion 2O iii iront of the cab portion 22 is provided with a cover 32 which is hinged to one of the side members of the box by separable hinges such as shown in Figs. 7 to 14. Each of the hinges consists of aY lower member 3e and an upper member 36. The lower member 34 as best shown in Fig..8 has two cutout portions 38 which are bridged by a pintle Vmember 40 iixedly mounted iniupstaiiding cal members 42 when the two hinged mem-- bers are attached together. The upper meinber between the middle cutout portion and the cutout end portions is4 provided with hoolrs48 adapted to turn upon the twoexposed portions of the pintle e0. The operation of the hinge will be apparent from Figs. 13 vand 14 from which it will be seen that Vwhen the upper member 36 is turned through a little more than 180o it may be readily separated from the lower hinged member. By comparison with Fig. 17, it will be understood that the cover 32 may beiemoved from the box portion 2O upon rotating the cover through a little more than 1300. 'The cab portion 22 is hinged to the rear end of the box member by hinges which are similar to those already described butY which are narrower as shown in Figs. l and 5, the lower member 50 having only one cutout portion bridged by a pintle 52 and the upper member 54; having a single hook 56 to engage the pintle. These two sets of separable hinges permit the cab portion 22 and the cover 32 to be readily removed so that the box portion 20 may be placed in open condition as shown in Fig. 6. The
cab portion when in place is held by a suitable catch such as the catch 58 shown in Fig. l. The cab portion is provided with a top or cover 60. the rear edge of which is hinged at 62. Hinged to the :t1-ont of the.
,staple and hold the lshield member in raised forward position as shown in Fig. l to ad mit air. The side of the cab portion near its top is provided with a second staple 74 so that when the cover 60 is swung on its hinges 62 one of the notches in the bar68 may be engaged with this staple to hold the cover 60 and the shield 64 in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 so that more air may be admitted.` The bar 68 is provided with a notch 76 onfits upper edge so that when the catch 58 is` released and the cover 60 is pulled upwardly, this notch Vwill engage the staple 7() and the whole cab portion, including the cover 60 and the shield 64, will swingr backwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. ,i Adetachable chain 78 shown in Fig. 2 may be secured at its ends to the box portion `and, the cab portion respectivelyso as to limit the amount of this rearward movement.
glass to constitute a window 80 as shown in Fig. 3. The shield 64 is provided with a slideway to receive a frame 82 containing glass S4 for. use in cool weather. During warm weather, the frame 82 may be removed and replaced by a frame 86 containing screen material 88. In order to hold these frames in place, they are preferablylprovided with a pin 90 adaptedto engage aflat spring92 in the slideway." As shown in Fig. 15, the sides of the cab may also be provided with slideways for receiving removable frames 94 which may contain glass or screen material according to the particular season of the year. Y
The operation andadvantages of my invention have to a large extent been set forth in connection with vthe foregoing description. The device is so constructed that it may be readily changed from a closed condition to a condition which is open to any desired extent for admitting air. For use in warm weather, the superstructure may be p Theback of the cab Y may be provided with an openinglilled with removed entirely or if desired, the glass trames may be replaced by screens for keeping out insects. It will be obvious from Fig. 2 that the body may be mounted upon any suitable supporting structure.
I claim:
l. A limousine body for baby carriages comprising a box member, a cover for the forward portion of `said box member, separable hinges for attaching said cover to said box member, a cab member extending above the rearportion ofsaid box member and separable hinges for attaching the rear wall oi said cab member to said boi; member.
y 2. A@ limousine body for baby carriages comprising a box member, aV cover for the forward portion or said box member, a cab member-attached to the rear portion of said box member, a cover hinged to the upper end of the rear wall of said cab member, a. shield member hinged to the :trent or" said cover, and means for adjustably holding said shield member in a more or less opened position.
3. A. limousine body for baby carriages comprising a box member, a cover loro the forward portion of said box member, a cab member attached to the rear portion of said box member7 a cover hinged vto the upper end of the rear wall of said cabmember, a shield member hinged to the `iront of said cover, a ratchet bar hinged to the lower portion of said shield member, and an engageable member on said cam member foren-V gagement by said ratchet bar.
l 4l. A limousine body for baby carriages comprising a box member, a cover for the forward portion Voi' said` box member, a cab member hinged to ther-ear wall of said box member, a cover hinged to the upper end of the rear wallet said cab member, a shield member hinged tothe front ofsaid cover, a
