Description
E. D. ALDRIGH. y Scythe-Holders for Rag-Cutters.
*Mena* #292 v 5am/3 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR D. ALDRICH, OF PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCVTHE-HOLDERS FOR RAG-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 145,475., dated December 16, 1873; application led May 7, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR D. ALDRICH, of Pittsfield, Berkshire county, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Scythe- Holder for Rag-Gutters, ot' which the follo Wing is a specification:
My invention consists of a device for holding the section oi' Scythe-blade used to cut rags in paper-mills securely, and in such Way that it can readily be detached to be ground or reversed, and can be tightened in place easily and quickly, and by mechanism arranged to be entirely out of the Way of the operator, and that cannot catch in the rags.
In the drawings, Figures I, II, and III show different views of my invention.
Y The holder proper, B, is of cast metal, in one piece, and has a ilat base to bear against the side of the table, to Which it is attached by means of bolts passing through holes left in the flanges I) b, as seen iu Fig. I. The sides of the holder, which may be made as light as is consistent With strength, support the top C and bottom D, which afford the two bearings d g to the Scythe-blade H. These openings d g in the top C and bottom D, I form of a triangular shape to conform to a cross-section of the blade H, and are relatively arranged to give the desired inclination to the blade When in place; and the blade H, when in bearings i\the shell, is as firm as though seated in a solidblock of the same thickness as the holder B. The Scythe-blade H, when in place Within the holder, is grasped by the bolt-hook L, the
screw-shank of which passes through the holder to the outside through the nut O, and the thumb-nut WV enables the Scythe-blade H to loosen it has to be detached when not in use,
and fragments of Wooden Wedges are liable to become mixed with the rags, and the Wedges require frequent adjustment; butin my device all inconveniences are entirely done away with, and a broad flat surface forms a base to the cutting-edge of the blade, and is iiush with the surface of the Work-table.
Now having described my invention, what I claim is- The Scythe-holder, consisting of the ilanged shell B, having the openings d g and nut in combination with the hook-bolt L and nut W, the parts being constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose as set forth.
EDGAR D. ALDRICH.
