UNHTED STATES CARLO U. FINOCCHIARO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y..
' iAStJi -i INDEX roa FILING nnvions.
Application filed October 19, 1922. Serial No. 595,615.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARLO U. FiNoo- OHIARO, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Index for Filing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion.
My invention has for its object to provide an index for filing devices having a plurality of guides in which cards with the titles of the records or articles filed may be disposed, the guides being positioned relatively to filing spaces so that the title of the rec- 0rd or article in a filing space may be ascertained by examining the card in an associated guide.
Another object ofthe invention is to secure the guides in a drawer with a glass front panel which will permit the user to examine the cards in the guides witl 'out pulling out the drawer. If one or more of the cards is to be replaced the drawer may be pulled out, when the user will have ready access .to the card and the guides.
Still other objects of the invention are to provide a guide which may be manufactured at little expense and to dispose the guides in staggered relations in the drawer so that the cards and the guides may be conveniently handled.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the prefered form of my invention is described.
In the drawings, similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views, in which 8 Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a sound reproducing machine cabinet in which my invention is embodied;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front elevation of the cabinet shown in Figurel with the doors openand with a part of the front of the drawer broken away;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the guide members in which cards with the titles of the articles or records are disposed; and
Figure dis a fragmentary plan view of the drawer.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the cabinet 5 is provided with a compartment 6 having filing means 7 for the records 8, which are to be indexed so that they may be readily located. Above the compartment 6 there is a compartment 9 in which a drawer 10 is disposed. This drawer 10 has a front glass panel 11 and a transverse partition 12, it being possible to dispose in the drawer at the rear of the transverse partition records 13 which are not to be indexed as they are not used frequently. In the drawer 10 between the glass front panel 11 and the transverse partition 12 guide 1 1 to permit securing the guide 141 to, the bottom of the drawer 10. The sides 17 are bent over, as best shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, to provide guide arms for engaging the sides of the card 18 on which the title of a record or article is written. This title card 18 is positioned in a guide 1% disposed in a vertical plane with a record 8 so that the user may, without opening the drawer 10, look through the glass panel 11 to ascertain the position of the card 18 having the title of the record which is to be used when the doors 19 of the compartment 6 inay be opened and the record in vertical alignment with the said card 18 may be removed from between the rods 20, this record being the one having the title which was referred to as stated.
In order that the cards may be readily positioned and removed from the guides 14,
and also to enable the use of the greatest possible number of these guides, I propose to position the guides 14: in the drawer 10 between the glass panel 11 and the trans verse partition 12 in two rows, one behind the other, the uides 14 being staggered in the rear row re atively to the guides in the front row, as best illustrated in Figure 4: of the drawings. 3
When cards 18 are to be changed or are to be disposed in position in the guides 14, the drawer 10 is drawn out but merely to use the index does not make it necessary to pull out the drawer 10, for, as has been stated, the cards 18 held by the guides 14 may be viewed through the glass panel 11.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: i
1. In an index for filing devices, a cabinet, having a drawer with a transparent front in which may be disposed cards with titles of articles in the cabinet in associated positions relatively to the guides, the guides being positioned to exhibit the cards for in- 5 spection through the glass panel.
2. In an index for filing devices a cabinet having a. drawer with a transparent front net in associated relationship relatively to' the guides.
CARLO U. FINOCCHIARO.
